I was having this discussion with my nerfherder the other day. We both loved the Solo movie and are hoping there may be sequels or other standalones of similar quality. However, we both agreed that we aren't that excited for Episode 9. We both agreed we will want to see it, but we won't have the need to be there on opening night.

    The reasons for this are
A.) The fate of the OT3. Force Ghosts (if they appear) aren't enough to really get us invested. With Han's fate, Carrie Fisher's passing, and Luke's exit we don't feel as much of a draw. (And they better not friggin recast Leia or I'm out.)

B.) While we like the new characters, we felt they were squandered in TLJ and should have spent more time together so we got to know their relationships. They're okay and all, but they don't have enough wow factor and development/interaction to keep me invested.

C.) TLJ didn't end with any big cliffhanger or situation that has me hooked and waiting for the next one.

This is just my opinion and I'm in no way bashing those who disagree. I am just curious where others out there in the galaxy think about the upcoming sequel.

If you are not excited for the next installment, what could get you to change your mind?

If you are pumped for the next sequel and love the direction of this trilogy, what element of the story or characters has you most invested?

Thanks for your input! I'd love to hear your thoughts!

I'm in for IX. The sequel trilogy has been the same thing for me that the rest of the SW Saga movies have: modern escapist fairytales that can be simply a ton of fun or hold deeper meaning, depending on one’s POV.

    Can't wait for me.
J.J. gives me confidence. Will be difficult to tie some aspects but I know for sure it will be a serious, well measured and a good film.

    Dear, I can't believe it's in 572 days!
Now we have seen Solo i find inadmissible not having a SW movie in a year :p
    The wait will be long.

I will definitely see it at opening night, but right now I'm not really that excited. Mainly because it's too far away and furthermore I'm still "burnt" by TLJ. But JJ will hype this movie and I'm looking forward to it.

The marketing of this movie will be interesting after all.

As of right right now, I'm not excited at all. I'm curious about a few things, but nothing that will get my butt in a seat while in theaters.

However, I am planning on watching TLJ on Netflix at some point this summer, so since I've only seen TLJ once, I suppose my opinion could change.

I'll be there, obviously very excited to see it, as I have been for every StarWars irrelevant of the criticism or praise it has received, BUT I will not be there opening night, I feel although they killed that urgency to see the movie with TLJ. I'll be there in the first 3 days though ;)

I am not super-excited at the moment, mainly because this negativity really gets to me. I am not that super-invested into the OT3 and I am most likely going to see it on the opening night. Still, the movie is too far away and a lot of things could change.

I’m definitely going to be there for IX on opening night, but admit my excitement is very tempered after TLJ. Unfortunately TLJ didn’t leave me with any real reason to be anticipating IX - what real question or suspense is left?Snoke is dead; Kylo has already been beaten twice in the ST...he’s not a threat in the way Vadar was going into ROTJ. Hux has been turned into a literal comedic sidekick. Finding out Rey is teaming up with Broom Boy to defeat or fool Kylo for a third time doesn’t exactly put people into theaters like a showdown between the Avengers and Thanos (that is now the bar).

I am very excited JJ is back at the helm, but RJ largely sucked the wind right out of the sails of this trilogy for me.

I'm certainly the least excited I have ever been to see a Saga film, but it's Star Wars so i'm still excited. And enjoying Solo has lifted my spirits.

I think this is a key point going into Episode 9, after the Force Awakens their was a real buzz around Star Wars both from fans and the general movie going audinece about what would happen next. The Last Jedi (Love it or hate it) dealt with all the speculation quite brutally and didn't replace it with much. The buzz about what happens next doesn't seem to be their like it was after the Force Awakens(both among fans and among the general population)

What ever you think of the Last Jedi, from marketing point of view not carrying that level of theories speculation an intrigue into episode 9 is going to have a negative effect on it's box office, unless they pull a blinder with the marketing campaign.

I am excited for Episode IX. I don't expect anything in the next installment, but I would like to see the following:
    1. I would like to see screen time with Rey, Finn, and Poe together on a mission. I just want their friendship more established and strengthened.
    2. Romance - I really enjoyed the romance in Solo and realized how much I missed it in the sequel trilogy.
    3. Force Ghost Luke and Anakin (it would be a great way to tie the whole saga together).
    4. More R2D2 and Chewie actually as utilized characters that are integral to the plot and not a one-note in the sidebar.
    5. A time jump from TLJ from 2 to 5 years. I want to see how Kylo Ren's reign in the First Order affected the galaxy.
    6. I do not want Leia played by another actress. Please have her character passed away prior to the film or at least at the beginning.
    7. Knights of Ren - what is up with these characters? You don't just tease them in the TFA and never have them utilized in the sequel.

If nothing on my list is addressed, I will be fine as long as the story is compelling and has a satisfactory ending for the whole saga.

I have great interest in this episode but mostly from the business and marketing perspective. How will they get momentum going in order to get the general public to see it. To earn a billion or more you need more than just us hard cores to see the film. Right now I am not sure how that will go

Of course I will watch it on opening night, but it's not like I can't wait for it, like I couldn't wait for TLJ. It kinda feels like I don't have anything to look forward to, as I know that my favourite heroes will not be there anymore. And with the slight exception of Ben and maybe Poe, I don't really have that much interest for the new characters...

I have one or two scenarios that could get me hyped, though, but it's still too early to tell...

I voted meh. Which is really strange for me to feel about a (supposed) saga film. It would have been unthinkable a couple of years ago.

There's nothing about the story that could raise my expectations, because I don't do that. I throw ideas, but I don't expect anything from a story I don't know. Although I will say that while I have no expectations per se, I do expect it to be the same quality as TFA and TLJ.

I'll see it, but I won't be in any sort of rush.

Zero interest. Going to boycott it and will NOT see it. This sequel trilogy is an utter waste of time now.

Episode IX will have no Han, no Leia and now, no Luke. (unless Force Ghost Luke appears). Instead, we are supposed to be satisfied with a Mary Sue, a cowardly toilet janitor and an over-emotional engine room pipe cleaner as our new main heroes and heroines. Pffft. Oh and broom boy. Hah!

Anyway, Episode IX, if it follows the example of TLJ and TFA is only going to be a rehash of Return Of The Jedi - in new clothes, the weakest episode of the OT. They will probably do the whole good guy gone bad (Ben Solo) redemption thing again, do an epic space battle between First Order and a New Republic which has suddenly found a backbone because Leia's sudden death has given her cause the publicity it needed. And maybe there'll even be a planetary surface battle (in a forest or jungle) with some cute fluffy warrior creatures (Ewoks?!) that are supposed to teach you that "primative species can overcome overwhelming odds even against a technologically superior foe or adversary".

Nah. Count me out of the next one. There's no longer a point or purpose to future Episode films, other than to make more money and to push bizarre California style identity politics around the rest of the world. The Sequel Trilogy story for me is broken and has been since the disappointment of TFA and the horror of TLJ. Nor do I care about the new characters enough (or at all) to waste money to watch another TFA or TLJ style film. Star Wars, for me, ended with fireworks and drumming up in the trees of Bright Tree Village on the Forest Moon of Endor at the end of the real Return Of The Jedi, not its future 2019 copy.

    I would see an Obi-Wan film though. . . .
