Might as well get in the discussion as well:

If you read the first two Aftermath books it clearly shows you and even says that all the bad guys that survived are trying to get back together and never surrender. Granted that first AFtermath book was a little weak, but it shows you the start of the FO with Brendol Hux and rae sloane trying not to lose everything that means anything in their life. They are sloppy and so unorganized that it's amazing that the last group of leaders don't kill each other.

By the time the Second AFtermath comes around we know that the same group of Generals and Grand Moff's are together, but this time they have a leader. They might not all know he is the leader yet, but Gallius Rax is the think tank and in my opinion the Father of the FO. He has taken this group of former Empire members and they decide to rebound and hide to get stronger.

When Bloodline starts, we don't know where the shadow council is at but we do know that they have influence in the senate. I believe that the members of the senate are the ones that decided to name the FIrst Order, well the FIrst Order. The only real difference between the two is the fact they are still fighting with each other and still ironing out all the kinks. I feel they're more dangerous and lethal than the Empire because they're more desperate to hang on to the past. The sente knew that there was no way that anybody would want the Empire back, but if they called it the FO then it could pass. You gotta know that in this book the senate is already in the same position that they were in during the prequels...just no leader.

In my mind they are the same, which makes sense on why they made the Starkiller...if you have a whole bunch of people from the prior Empire in charge and they are so in love with it and think it was the greatest time in the galaxy why wouldn't they think it Not be a good idea to make another "death STar"...but they have learned their lesson from the past so that is why they made it even bigger. So big that it couldn't possibly fault this time around.

just as a side note, these are actually mostly my impressions from the film and not the external sources. like @Ninjabeans right away i felt a difference and i liked it. i like the FO in ways i didn't like the Empire--lots of ways. sometimes i feel like that makes me a traitor to the OT, but i'm willing to live with that ~ hahaha

    fistbump! yay!

    - discriminate against non-humans

    - they're more ruthless

    - they are newer

    - they have very specific goals

    - they have better aim ;)

The idea of the First Order isn't that they're necessarily better than the Empire...they're just the next evolution. They certainly try to be better, but sometimes armies lose battles.

As for Snoke; We have the benefit of seeing Palpatine over the course of an entire trilogy while we've only seen Snoke in one movie. Compare Palpatine in A New Hope to Snoke in The Force Awakens...he does not appear any more powerful or menacing. Give them time for the slow reveal, I'm sure they have something grand planned with him.

    This.
The same applies to the FO itself, we saw the rise and fall of the Empire in several movies/novels/comics. The Empire is no more, it's the time of the FO now. They may look the same but we should really wait for EPVIII and EPIX to compare the FO to the Empire. You have to see the bigger picture to truly understand/witness the greatness of the FO. :D

Good point. Would the Empire be menacing if all we knew about them was that they employed soldiers that couldn't shoot and built a spaceship that could be destroyed with one shot?

The First Empire is a first rate organization any decent galactic citizen should be proud to join.

Now, what evidence do we have for this, you ask? Well, my friends, I shall elaborate.

Firstly, they value team spirit. You can see this in the team meetings and moral driven speeches such as those delivered by that fine, upstanding modicrum of efficiency, General Hux.

They gave excellent, targeted training and education programs. Education was obviously tailored to individual children, such as Finn, to produce effective soldiers Officers and technical staff.

They look after their own with psychological and medical treatment. Finn obviously was having a hard time following orders and dealing with live combat situations. Was he force choked to death for failure? No. He was sent for evaluation and reconditioning, and returned to normal duties. Was Ren left to die in the snow? Of course not, Supreme Leader Snoke made sure he was rescued.

They drive technological advancement and initiative. SKB anyone? Not only was it a marvel of modern engineering, but it's construction must have sent the economy in the Outer Reachers and Unknown Regions into overdrive, providing economic opportunity to millions.

Anyway, I could go on and on. And may do so at a later date when time permits... But the value of this organization as a growth and extension of the former glorious Empire should be plain to any logical, rational person.

The First Order is obviously more than just a derivative of the Empire.

    :p

Actually they are different, yet similar. They aren't technically defeated just their starkiller base destroyed.

How are they different you say? Well in the mighty words of George Lucas they are faster and more intense :p

I think alot of this "lame rehash of the Empire" bashing will go away if 8 haves a simple line like.........."Once Coruscant falls we shall reestablish the Galactic Empire!"

    Or something similar.

It is implied that the First Order is a smaller remnant faction of the previous Empire. Are there other such former Imperial factions? ("Second Order", "Third Order" etc)
