The fact that they told about "series" for them and "trilogy" for Rian Johnson means that they are working with a concept.
    What could it means?
1.) They try to do it as Tv series: when a tv series is successful they ask for more seasons... maybe they want to keep that chance. If they release one or two movies and are succesful they might make 3 or 4... maybe is not even one only story!
2.) They really don't have anything yet! Maybe D&D just had a bunch of ideas but they didn't stop too much to work on it. I'm sure they discussed a lot about it, but... they are in the middle of the production process with Game of Thrones final season. One thing is to have ideas and chat about it, but to sit down and start to write and do real things... that takes time that probably they don't have right now..
3.) The fact that they said "series" also means something: is not going to be JUST ONE. That's maybe going against point 1. It means that they wont present one movie and see what happens, they really have something in mind!
4.) Just to don't delete completely the idea: "3" is a posibility.

If I'd have to guess I would say 5.
7 is a (sort of) standard for signing contracts with new actors but i think it would be too many.

Good points allaround. If they haven't called it trilogy but are calling it series then its not a trilogy.
4 is a bad number for series. Just look at twilight...yuck. i think they dont want any associations with such movies.
*ponders* is 50 shades a quadrology too? Haven't seen it and don't plan to. Yuck yuck

Also...the fact that ep. 7 and 8 cover only a week's worth of in story time means something too

Honestly? A five movie series sounds awful. The reason a trilogy is so ideal for movie series is because it allows filmmakers to mirror the standard three act structure without holding on the conflict for too long. Five movies with the same cast of characters revolving around the same conflict would wear thin by the fourth movie. This isn't even me being opposed to movies set in the Old Republic (Although I really don't think they should bring Revan in). It's about having a story that's able to flow without being stretched thin across too many movie.

Let's have 2 trilogies then from B&W and another trilogy from RJ.

Bob Iger already said that these aren't direct-to-Disney-streaming or whatever they'll call it. While that service will have original films, it seems like it will be mid-budget content. Anything that has a big enough budget to warrant a wide theatrical release will get one - that's just how Disney's model rolls.

Also, I'm of the opinion that this is a two-film series with the possibility of expanding beyond that based on how they do. I imagine that if they're getting the GOT guys, then they're looking at a long-term investment - maybe as many as five or six movies in the series.

i have a feeling disney will crush that hope of yours...the mandalorian wars are not only referenced, but ends in a similar way(instead of malachor, it was mandalore that was destroyed according to canon). Not only that but a figure that looks like revan appears in a anakin and obi wan comic and speaks of a legendary warrior who looks like the spitting image of revan (pablo himselrf never comments on revan AT ALL, only that if the old republic is done that they will make it look older, PABLO NEVER COMMENTS ON REVAN AT ALL)

at least in my version of revan. 5 movies is a requirement.

the first movie is the mandalorian wars, Revan is a loyal but somewhat independently minded jedi who is loyal to the code(but is skeptical, always torn between his faith and logic). He was left there by his mother, and has trust issues only solved by his friend malak and his girlfriend bastilla. When the mandalorian wars break out he is torn between the code and morality. He is also being haunted by a powerful voice in his head. He is disillusioned by the council and takes one third of the jedi order with him to war where he is carved from a innocent child like blind follower of his religion to a ruthless Machiavellian politician. over the course of the story he learns that the republic senators are funding the war to get access to the resources of the outer rim. He also learns that the rich are also funding the mandalorian wars to destabilize the republic enough to bankroll politicians to pass their agendas, as well as the jedi order working with the rich to get a piece of the pie. Revan is disgusted as the story goes on, the voice in his head becoming more influencial and feeling like a dark demon on his shoulder. the story climaxes during the battle of mandalore when revans friend exile activates the shadow generator and deforms mandalore. killing 98 percent of mandalores 20 billion people. Revan leaves the jedi order to join the centrist party of the republic, where they win elections on a landslide and vote revan as co-chancellor of the republic. The third of the jedi leave with revan to become his personal army. Revan envisions a stronger more powerful republic, one where justice reigned at all costs. Revan is visited by the voice again. Who congratulates and praises him for his intelligence and ruthlessness. He tells him to go to moraband where he plans to reveal the truth of who he is. Revan meets him and sees a walking corpse, who is possessed by a powerful entity

that the voice is his father, and not only that but was the prime jedi....the legendary being who not only created the jedi order but tried to gain control of the cosmic force itself, where it rejected him. As a result he destroyed his spirit and became THE DARK ONE. a cosmic force of immense power, who would later create the sith before becoming imprisoned by ancient jedi and finally escaping when the mandalorians stumbled on his tomb. Where he helped mandalore the ultimate build weapons and become mandalore the ultimates father figure. Revan no longer feels alone and vows to become the "best son a father could be"(while in secret revan has plans of his own, behind his fathers back).

movie 2 will be the jedi civil war, the relationship between THE DARK ONE and revan, the alienation of malak and revan, as he grows suspicious of everyone in his inner circle of political power. Revans materialism and hubris coming back to bite him in the end...he is exiled and his powers is taken away and he grows bitter at how he gave up his friends for power. and leaves for the outer rim to die. While bastilla has jedi training to protect herself and her son from revan...who is the father of her son, and kept him from revan because she knew that he was growing dark.

movie 3 will be loosely Kotor with a plot of revan regaining his love for other people thanks to his son, movie 4 will be kotor 2 and movie 5 will be the final battle between revan and his father the dark one...leading to jedi and sith working together to destroy him and the final fate of revan

    @zazeron

You misunderstand me. I don't want Revan to be brought into an Old Republic movie. I have no problem with his story being recanonized though, through a book, or a comic, or a remake of the games. I just think it would be a huge waste to have these creative people working on a movie only to have them be hamstrung by stories that have already been told.

is it being hamstrung when the filmmakers love the story?

    Yeah.

I love Dead Space. That doesn't mean I want to recreate Dead Space. I can take inspiration from Dead Space, but just re-making it would restrict me creatively.

I love game of thrones, do I think these show runners can make a good Star Wars film... eh, just cause their good at one thing doesn't mean they'll be good at other things, I'll stay comfortably pessimistic until I see the the first film.

Just a quick midnight oil thought here. Remeber the Animatrix? It was a "series" of short films set within The Matrix universe and we're inter connected in one way or another. Imagine like 20 or 30 short films. Probably not going to be anything like this. They may do something very different format wise. It might not be a series of two hour movies.

This would be an interesting play and if it did turn out to be this then we could definitely see more than 3 films. Only trouble you run into with this is people may expect them to turn out movies at a much faster pace which could take away from the overall quality or fan reaction to the films.

It might be a trilogy but Lucasfilm didn't want to use the word again. :p

Or maybe the duo are developing several different ideas for unconnected movies from different eras.
