Since this will be the final film in this trilogy and what seems to be the conclusion of the Skywalker saga, how much of this film do you think will be a nostalgia trip and how much do you think will be new content? With the casting announcement released it is confirmed that we get Mark, Billy Dee, and Anthony back along with footage of Carrie so there already seems to be a fair amount of OT character content with more cameos that I'm sure weren't in the casting announcement. Do you think we will see more new alien species or are you hoping for more footage of species that are already in the universe (ex: Rodians, Sullustans, etc...)? One of people's biggest complaints with The Force Awakens was that it was too much like A New Hope so do you think this will dissuade J.J. from using too much content from the OT?

I think the story will focus on Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn and Poe. The "old guard" (Luke, Lando, Leia, C3P0) and new characters (Rose, Keri Russell's character, Richard E. Grant and Naomi Ackie) will support our main protagonist and antagonists. I believe we will see new creatures/aliens mixed in with old creatures/aliens. I think we will see relics of the prequels and OT. I hope we are surprised with a Force Ghost council with Yoda, Luke, Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-wan (Ewan Mcgregor) and Anakin (Hayden Christensen) to give advice on how to best defeat the First Order and Kylo Ren and restore balance to the galaxy. I know we will get Luke (I assume as a Force Ghost) but the other Force Ghosts would be cool. I do believe we will get a balance of Nostalgia and New.

Ep.IX won't be as nostalgically focused as TFA since JJ's job now is not to set up awesome stuff but to satisfactory finish them; in other words, JJ's hands are more tied this time around.

I'm pretty sure Ep.IX will be pretty dramatic and awesome indeed :D

I hope there is very, very little nostalgia. I think they have already relied way too much on OT characters in this trilogy, and was disappointed to see that they are bringing Billy D Williams back.

However, I don't think that using alien species we have already seen is necessarily nostalgia. That is just who inhabits this galaxy.

If they can devise a scene where all OT heroes are together on screen, the persons around me in the theatre better be wearing some Leia buns style noiseblockers. It would be a nostalgia overload is what I'm saying :)

I really hope the movie won't have that much of nostalgia. Yes, it will definitely have some of it, you even should have => Leia's and Lando's return etc. But JJ should really focus on finishing the story and tie the whole saga together.

JJ never had to finish something, so it's understandable to be sceptical. But I trust in JJ.

Well, we have to remember that it has been said (by JJ, I believe) that this last film will "have elements that will tie all three trilogies together", so I personally think it's going to be plenty of a nostalgia trip...after all, this will be the end (presumably) of the road for the OT characters, and it has to be a good one.

With THAT being said, I'm not sure how they'll handle things like Force Ghosts going into the next trilogy if this the end for Luke, considering that we know that the Jedi will continue on, and FG's are a "thing" in Jedi lore.

I primarily expect that we'll see planets (perhaps like Tatooine and Coruscant) on the screen and references to past events and people that we've seen in the last 40 years, that will no doubt play a part in the story, but only as fixtures to move the story forward in coming to the ending of the three trilogy arc.

The biggest problem that has pervaded the SW Franchise going back to 1999 is it is chasing its tail after each movie trying to please the fans. After TPM, Lucas thought less Jar Jar in AOTC would please the fans. After AOTC, Lucas thought a more dark tone (like ESB) in ROTS would please the fans. After the PT, TFA was all about doing everything opposite of the PT to please the fans. After TFA, it was all about being more original in TLJ to please the fans. Now for Episode 9 going to the well with the remaining OT characters to please the fans.

Episode 9 will have THE MOST fan service moments (especially in each trailer because they have to get those alienated fans back by showing Luke Skywalker do something badass). Recycled Leia footage, 81 year old Billy Dee Williams just reeks of a franchise that refuses to move on.

They had a great story of Rey vs Kylo Ren for this Trilogy, but it has ironically been overshadowed by the OT characters and it never allowed them to really delve more into it. Is anyone talking about Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo Ren? No, all I hear about is whether Luke will come back from the dead, what Leia footage they might use, and whether Lando will fly the Falcon? Sounds like Disney didn't listen to Kylo when he said to kill the past!

I think there is a mistake in thinking it is an “either or” situation. We can have both, nostalgia and creativity. Nostalgia beats make the audience connect emotionally with the new story, whatever it may be. JJ and RJ knew that as they both have used it in their films. That is why RJ brought R2 and Leia's hologram to Ach-to, or why both films echo the OT in scenes and have brought legacy characters, music and visual style from it.

And everyone is forgetting about poor Terio... If one doubts JJ’s ability to be original and end things (something complely unjustified from my point of view), they should not forget Terio is also part of the writing team. Does he also have this alleged history of “only using nostalga” and “not being able to end things”?

I trust these people and am sure they’ll make a great film. they have delivered so far in the ST.

It’s not Disney. It’s the fans. The biggest complaint I hear about the ST is the handling of legacy characters.

Knowing JJ this will basically be 90% of an OT nostalgia trip. Don't expect alot from the PT.

JJ "strongly dislikes" the PT era.

He made alot of references to the PT in TFA too...

This. I may not like the PT that much, but I love planets like Mustafar, Naboo, Kamino and so on. So JJ could have the same feelings.

I think there will definitely be some nostalgia. Hopefully not too much. After being announced that he was coming back for IX, JJ did state that IX was going to be different. That gives me hope that it will be a good blend of nostalgia and new things.

Based on the criticism JJ received after The Force Awakens and his statements from a few months ago I don't expect Episode IX to be the nostalgia trip that was TFA. There might be more fan service in Episode IX, but I believe JJ when he says they've got to do something new.

I agree with this comment 100%
I would like to see Episode 9 have as little nostalgia as possible. It is time to move forwards.
The more I think about it, the more The Phantom Menace felt like the last Star Wars film that wasn’t worried about pleasing the fan base. While we got familiar elements like C3PO and Jabba the Hutt, their inclusion was in the most unexpected ways possible. I felt Lucas was just having fun being Lucas, before the in-fighting consumed the fandom.

I would say that given the reaction to TLJ, that It would classify as a film that wasn’t worried about pleasing the fan base.
