How did the emperor survive ROTJ?

Palpatine had a good old safety net installed in the pit while the throne room on Death Star II was under construction. It was dangerous for the construction workers to install the bridge between the elevator and the throne and this safety net was still there when Vader threw the emperor down the shaft.

According to my sources we will se a flashback scene where the emperor lands soft and smootly in this net and finds himself a shuttle to escape well before DSII blew up.

So why did the emperor not just travel to Coruscant to rebuild his empire you may ask? He may have lost a couple of Star destroyers, a SSD and DSII, but the rebel fleet lost even more. Well, your guess is as good as mine and TROS need to adress this potential plot hole. Maybe he just wanted to retire and rest for a while, until students with more dark side potential than goody two shoes Luke and crippled Vader showed up?

My theory is Palpatine knew Vader would betray him (The Rule of Two by Darth Bane makes it a must for Sith). I have in my theory about Rey’s parents that Palpatine was only trying to neutralize Anakin, The Chosen One until the Sith’ari (Sith Chosen One) comes. Planning for when Vader woukd betray him, Palpatine learned hiw Darth Maul saved himself (Clone Wars) with the Dark Side after being cut in half.

They started hinting at Palpatine's hand in the FO all of the way back to the Aftermath series. My guess is that they either won't deal the mechanics of his survival at all in the film (to be filled in later in books and comics) or else we'll simply get a throwaway line like when he talked about the death of Plagueis at the Opera.

I envision it being some sort of Force Bubble like Luke used many times in the old EU. He was still severely injured and it took many years for him to come around, while his contingency plan was working itself out on autopilot. When he finally "woke up" it would have been simple to re-assert his control over his pupil, Snoke.

A little known fact was Palp was the hide and seek champion 36 years running. Nobody ever looks in the mothballed fleet of star destroyer. While hiding he got all toasty and feel a sleep. Simple as that.

Biggest problem with him surviving physically is the dark-side release of energy from the shaft from his supposed death. It would make more sense if they explore his spirit continuing to exist and then coming back physically.

We don't really know that was an energy release caused by his death. It could very well have just been him releasing a massive burst of energy to slow himself down.

Well....maybe...coulda been...if you squint and look at it just so...
All of this is tough because he lived after all. I can see the conversation going along the lines of:

"It wasn't dark side energy being released, it was the formation of the force bubble."

This is why I think they won't spend too much time on it. The more they try to explain it, the more they paint themselves into a corner.

I'm not convinced - it appears as though he falls into a shield in the shaft. Will be interesting to see what JJ does to explain him comeback.

I hope its the latter, or the those watching the films only are not seeing the big picture of his return.

This could be REALLY good or REALLY bad (yeah I know, No S%#T!!!). I think they need to at least have a throw away line or three to at least give us some sort of an explanation. Yes, they will very likely give an in depth explanation in the novelization, perhaps in another book. But they can't just have him show up with no explanation at all.

Personally, I'd have preferred they left Palps dead and had Plageius survive, but I do love love love me some Palpatine so if it is done right, it should be good.

Maybe Palpatine in throne room ROTJ sequence was just a dark side force projection and he was really just chilling in his Sith Fortress of Solitude(tm).

I think that Palpatine might have... imprinted his... essense on Vader's right before his death. That feels more plausible, than him surviving in the flesh. It would also explain why Kylo Ren is so messed up - maybe the helmet was communicating with him.

I like the concept of that, would also tie with the earlier artwork leaks of Vader/Anakin force ghost. Instead of him having a dual personality, the force ghost could have been that of Anakin and Palpatine somehow linked, and Palpatine's spirit survives leaching on Anakin's.

The next ROTJ Special Edition will show a bungee cord attached to Palpatine's ankle as he gets thrown into the pit.

More seriously, I suppose they could say that the blue flash of light was Palpatine using the force to teleport himself to the unknown regions. And, maybe like force projection, it's such a strenuous force power that it drained him and left him too weak to do anything other than wait for the right time to return.

Voldemort... all over again. Rey and Kylo are spending the whole movie on a "Scavenger" hunt, looking for the horcruxes needed to put the emperor back together...

    Ironic...
But if true, or anything like that, then J.K Rawlings should file against Lucasfilm.
