Lord Sidious took Darth Fre’eze’s advice to “put it on ice,” literally. He now has an ice castle, although Elsa (Frozen) is furious:

People seem to have more of an issue with Sidious surviving his fall than Maul being diced in two and falling down a shaft and surviving. Hell, Luke survived a fall with one hand missing. And why did the Emperor build his throne room right next to that shaft anyways?

You just made Maul and Sidious’ survival acceptable to me. Why for so long I ignored Luke’s incredible survival from the fall on Bespin, Cloud City, and decried Darth Maul’s survival. I stand corrected. Thank you.

Oh that’s good! Could also explain why Kylo was obsessed with the helmet (other than it being grandpas)!? Was it possessing him?

Well Luke wasn’t halved at the waist.

Wouldn't that be a little too much like Sauron and Voldemort?

Anyway, of course having Palpatine alive is going to create plot holes if not explained. But I think we will get some proper explanations.

But I'm not really sure that we will see him in physical form... The scene with Rey looks a lot like a vision, plus we can't be sure that it is indeed him under the hood...

How could Vader catch him then?

The same way Leia could feel force projection Luke touch her hand, pass a physical item and then touch her face and kiss her forehead.

Palpatine wanted him to and he used the force.

Leia is Force sensitive too. She clearly undestands that Luke isn't there. The dice is not physical, you see it fade away when Kylo picks it up, something that I admit that was a horrible mistake, since Luke had already perished it shouldn't have stayed there... And you see Luke kissing Leia or touching her hand but we don't know if Leia really feels anything...

Any explanation for Palpatine still being around is going to be a major stretch which I think highlights some of the poor planning involved in the decision to bring him back.

But hey it made it past the LFL/Disney story group committee so it must be golden. Amirite? Pfffft

it's just energy. it can transfer. i believe Leia left the dice there deliberately. they brought comfort to her and maybe she wanted to pass that on to her son.

That's why I still doubt that we will see him in flesh... If we would, I don't really think that we would be teased so hard about it, unless they admit that it is a desperate move to appease the TLJ haters...

Yeah that is a good one, maybe Leia continued the dice projection herself to unsettle Kylo.

There are clearly catwalks and openings going across the shaft.

The tower where his throne sits is well above the normal level of the the Death Star. He would have fell down the long shaft, grabbed onto something physically or with the force, and had time to get out. Luke and Vader had time, so Palpatine would have had time.

Ok but why did he go to hiding while being the legal ruler of the galaxy ?

He could absolutely have played the jedi are evil again.

Just a daft theory... but does anyone else think the blue ‘wind’ /energy release after the initial blast when the Emperor falls into a bright light looks a little bit like hyperspace? Or is that just me? ... hmmmm.(emperor)

I’ve been thinking, isn’t it interesting how Palpatine makes a point of the rebels knowing where both he and the Death Star II would be... yes, famously, “it’s a trap”... but what if it was even more than that....

Hyperspace in ships involves navicomputers. Calculating a safe route when travelling at lightspeed. Well what if there was a specific reason the location around Endor was chosen that only the Emperor knew about? And what if the Death Star II wasn’t ever about being another Death Star as a super-weapon... but as a giant super-navicomp that would enable him to escape death in a scenario he knew was a possibility. “Everything is proceeding as I have foreseen”.

So here’s an outside guess: Palpatine knew Vader / Anakin might well betray him, he planned accordingly. Some kind of portal or hyperspace tunnel was possible from the Endor system, so in order to survive he goes along with events and at the vital moment triggers this ‘portal’ open as he falls (maybe via a lightning-sparked switch installed in the shaft (emperor)) and off he goes... sent elsewhere... everyone assume he’s dead (as he WANTED), he begins to rebuild, with all his clandestine contingency planning in place. He’ll let Luke get older, mess with any offspring he or Leia might have, or his buddy Snoke will (if they are in fact different people!!).

Ah yes, Snoke. If Snoke was Palpatine, maybe he can transfer his spirit, possessing different bodies. So after the Snoke body is sliced in two in TLJ, he jumps ship again with the help of the navigators and the strange contraption we see in that scene. We’ve been told Snoke is powerful with the dark side, but not a Sith - yes, that’s because Palpatine, who takes up residence in Snoke, is the Sith, and he found a great ‘vessel’ to possess .;)

On top of all that, he made sure the rebels could destroy the evidence in the DSII right after he ‘jumped’ to wherever he was going.

Probably all nonsense, but it’s fun to make stuff up. :)

Genuinely only just read this after I posted! But yeah... we had a similar thought. :)

Different topic, but in reply I felt bringing Maul back for the Clone Wars was ok, but tacking him onto the end of Solo was a bit lame.

Same reason Yoda did. He was losing. He has no apprentice and was pretty beat up from the lightning and the fall. Maybe he never fled the Death Star and was on the wreckage when it blew up. He could have used the dark side to maintain his life (similar to Maul) but wasn't in any condition to fight back. Then when he gained enough strength, retreated to the Unknown Regions and started rebuilding. I still believe he was the life force of Snoke and that Snoke was just a body that Palpatine possessed.

Hi everyone! First post here, cuz...its now or never:)

Snoke being Palpatine's puppet would tie stuff up, but for that to happen without contradicting TLJ - both Rey Palpatine and force dyad theories/leaks would have to be wrong. All Snoke wanted from Rey was information and a test for Kylo. To me he even seemed subtly disgusted by her.

Any scenario that has Palpatine physically survive what happened in the throne room at DS2 would severely diminish ROTJ almost to the point of rendering it useless. If he survived spiritually I could maybe buy it as a sort of dark side equivalent of the light sides being able to return as a force ghost. But by all indications he seems to have survived physically and that’s going to be an almost insurmountable problem but alas we shall see.

Whatever they do, it has to be believable. Literally if the audience doesn't believe the survival it doesn't matter how good the rest of the film is. It has to be explained, we saw him die. So it must be explained and it must be believable. I do think the movie will explain it, I think the knowledge of this will shake kylo, perhaps some kind of "This guy is too powerful to let survive." thing.

I know it's not popular opinoin but Anakin's story is now useless ...

The main saga just makes sense if it's now the Palpatine's one.
    --- Double Post Merged, Oct 24, 2019, Original Post Date: Oct 24, 2019 ---
Yoda had no political legitimacy whatsoever. Jedi were designated as enemy of the republic and he could have done nothing more.

Palps was in charge, he could have find another apprentice and he still had the empire forces and legitimacy with him. The Senate, many planets.

BTW Palps is nothing now, to be an emperor you need an empire.

But SW is now a story where the villain survived all the heroes which is not common.

I think the scenario needs to be that someone found his body and resurrected him or something. Perhaps a dark side collector or user like Snoke was drawn to his location and through the dark side was able to revive him years later. I'm not a fan of Palpatine in the flesh. It absolutely does minimize ROTJ. Where JJ and Disney made a mistake is trying to make all 9 films into one larger story. The arc was closed after ROTJ. It had a perfect ending.
