Since this is legends now, they don't have to hold to it. Also, he doesn't actually say, explicitly, that Palpatine is dead. Still cool reading though!

This from Rise and Fall which is slightly different from what is quoted above and attributed incorrectly.

I'm looking into the Kenobi book files, to see if Palpatine was named.

I think I might be onto something in terms of my own theory regarding the HOW of some things. When Palpatine is thrown down the shaft of the throne room tower there is an explosion. Compare that explosion with this clip from one of the animated series.

He survived because basic OSHA requirements made him install safety netting through out all shafts and tower in the Death Star as to many were just throwing stuff off it to see if they could hit someone. Lucky since they were Stormtroopers no one was ever hit.

    I figure that:

A: Palpatine died and somehow comes back in this film. Aa. He comes back after the "egg cracks", which is probably Vader's helmet cracking or the Death Star. If the egg is Vader's helmet, then Palpatine is sleeping in it and is responsible for Ben being influenced to join the dark side. This is also why Vader asked Luke to take the mask off, not only because he was missing a hand and couldn't pull it off, but because Palpatine was in it.

B: Palpatine made a rift through time and space and escaped to the World between Worlds or somewhere else as he fell down the metaphorical shaft to Hades.

C: Palpatine is tough as nails and survived the initial "blue explosion" that Vader and Luke saw in the shaft. Also, he landed on some metal arms in the shaft or escaped through an exhaust port in the Death Star, like Luke did in The Empire Strikes Back. Later when Luke and Vader left the scene, Palpatine used his Force powers to fly up out of the shaft and hurried to an emergency escape pod, right before the Death Star blew up.

Seems more like the "classically trained force user" dark side power than the raw, magical green mist belonging to the indigenous Witches of Dathomir.

    But what do I know?

I will say this about Palpatine's explosion in the shaft; it has always made a distinct impression on me (probably because I have fond memories of the scene being spoofed in Pac-Guy Resurrection as a kid). I always liked the matte painting that he fell into and the subsequent explosion. Before Peter Jackson's Return of the King came out, I would envision the ring falling into Mount Doom, and an intense explosion happening in the same fashion as Palpatine exploding.

It's also haunting how the emperor explodes. (Kudos to the special effects department-they went all out). I used to figure that it was the shaft or part of it blowing up at the bottom. A great death to a so-so character, I would argue (although many of you will disagree).

A line that Palpatine uttered in ROTS keeps coming to mind following his battle in the Galactic Senate against Yoda: "If there's no body then he isn't dead".

Palpatine never physically "exploded". I always thought it was the dark side energy escaping as he died. HOWEVER, lightning was still pouring out of his hands as he fell. Perhaps he ignited something flammable while falling. The bottom line is, bad guys in Star Wars don't die falling into pits.

Palyps survived the same way Leia did in TLJ:

I love what LucasFilm has done so far and bla bla.

And I think how Emperor survided really doesn't worry me at all, cause they could do/say this or that.

"To cheat death is a power only one has achieved, but if we work together, I know we can discover the secret".
His Master, or Palpatine himself? If he killed his master, probably he was not Plagueis? Or was the OT Palpatine another simple clone of the real one, and the real one was who cheated death? Was the blue explosion something Palpatine did himself to avoid fall towards to the end? Was Snoke who cheated death and Rian already killed it?

But better have a really good explanation/reason to show this insane amount of Star Destroyers. Even in the times of the Empire there weren't so many. Seems so so so so so exagerated.
The only good explanation I found is it's a cemetery of SD or something... And even this doesn't make any sense...

JJ needed to one-up ROTJ I guess. It's pretty laughable. There will be no explanation.

In A New Hope, it showed actual difficulty in a dog fight. In TFA, JJ had Poe taking out a dozen of them in a few seconds over Takodana. I remember that scene pissed me off because is was so over the top. Like a kid playing with his toys. Then Rian has Rey shoot down 3 Ties to save Rose, with ONE SHOT! I guess that's why I'm enjoying The Mandalorian so much. It doesn't feel over the top or exaggerated.

Honestly I really just hope that we are all grossly overestimating Palpatine's laugh and the nature that he is back.

According to the reports it seems like the scene I described in the opening post was cut and no explanation to Palp's return is given. I need to see the movie before I pass judgement. Only 10 hours left for me.

So, I saw TROS and I'm going to talk about Palpatine's appearance in the movie.

I don't recall any explanation of Palpatine's survival. Dominic Monaghan's character, whose name I don't know but I'm calling Basil Exposition, mentioned something about Sith alchemy or something. Did I miss the explanation or was there none?

There was none. Just some throw away lines delivered with no time for the audience to actually understand them or put them in context because it's on to the next scene immediately
