I have come up with this ranking system arranging the Jedi and Sith into tiers depending on how powerful they were/are/could be.

    Tier 1
    Jedi Master Anakin
    Jedi Master Luke

    Tier 2
    Jedi Master Yoda
    Sith Master Sidious

    Tier 3
    Jedi Master Windu
    Jedi Master Dooku

    Tier 4
Jedi Knight Anakin and Sith Master Vader
Jedi Knght Luke and Sith Master Maul

    Tier 5
Jedi Master Obi-Wan and Jedi Knight Yoda
    Sith Apprentice Sidious

    Tier 6
Jedi Master Qui-Gon and Jedi Knight Windu
    Jedi Knight Dooku

    Tier 7
    Sith Apprentice Vader
    Sith Apprentice Maul

    Tier 8
    Jedi Knight Obi-Wan

    Tier 9
    Jedi Knight Qui-Gon

Master is 3 tiers higher than Knight/Apprentice.
Age causes a Master to drop to the tier below.
A character is not powerful enough to fight a character that is 2 tiers or more above them.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan vs Maul. Qui-Gon had fallen to tier 7 due to age. Maul was on cusp of tier 6 and 7 and Obi-Wan was on the cusp of tier 7 and 8. Maul was most powerful, but all 3 were relatively evenly matched.

Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Dooku. Obi-Wan was tier 5. Anakin was tier 4. Dooku was on cusp of tier 3 and tier 4 due to age. Dooku was the most powerful. Anakin was able to fair better and beat him in their second duel because he was closer to him in power. Obi-Wan couldn't match Dooku in either duel.

Yoda vs Dooku. Yoda had fallen to tier 3 due to age. Dooku on the cusp of tier 3 and tier 4 was able to draw with Yoda.

Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Dooku part 2. The gap between the 3 characters had become less and so now Anakin was able to defeat Dooku.

Windu vs Sidious. This was 2 characters in their prime fighting. Windu was 1 tier below but was able to defeat Sidious due to his lightsabre skills. The other 3 Jedi were 2 or more tiers below Sidious and had no chance.

Yoda vs Sidious. This was older Yoda vs Sidious in his prime. Yoda was able to match Sidious but not powerful enough to defeat him.

Obi-Wan vs Anakin. Anakin was more powerful but Obi-Wan was close enough in power to be able to stay in the fight and ultimately win. Anakin drops in power due to his injuries.

Obi-Wan vs Vader. Both characters had dropped in power levels due to age. 5 vs 4 became 6 vs 5.

Luke vs Vader. Luke was 1 tier below Vader. Able to duel him but not powerful enough to defeat him.

Luke vs Vader. Luke is now 1 tier above Vader and able to defeat him. Luke is at similar level to Jedi Knight Anakin.

So now what level are Luke, Snoke, Kylo and Rey at?

    Luke first
Luke should be tier 2 or cusp of tier 1 and 2 due to age.

Snoke should be tier 1 or tier 2 if he is the main big bad.
Obviously Luke must not be powerful enough to take him down, especially when he must deal with Kylo as well and the rest of the First Order as well to get to him. That's why Yoda needed to go into exile.

Kylo, as Leia's son could be at Jedi Knight Anakin and Jedi Knight Luke level as a Not-Sith apprentice. I think that he will be one tier below them though, due to Leia not having any force training and also I think he might be a bit of a "runt" and this is part of the reason he turned to the darkside.

Rey, as daughter of Luke, when she is a Jedi Knight, will be tier 4, like Anakin and Luke.
As a "raw Jedi", she would be tier 6, like Luke was in Empire. This puts her 1 tier below Kylo.
Rey could also be more powerful if she is Rey Random and has been chosen by the Force itself.
She could be tier 3 as a Jedi Knight and tier 0 as Jedi Master. Luke be training her and think "please don't turn to the darkside" and Snoke be thinking "please do" :p

Didn't some trading cards have power levels? Luke was a 10 (along with Vader and Yoda). Rey is like 7. Kylo Ren is 8.

If it turns out he is force sensitive, maybe Obi-Wan's level or 1 tier higher?

If Rey is 7, it makes sense for Finn to be as well - assuming both are force sensitive. Please don't start an argument: none of us really know, and we can put off the vitriol until the movie comes out, right?

Well, there are two components to this.

    1) Force power, and
    2) Combat ability, which can be broken into:
    a) Physical combat ability, and
    b) Mental/Strategic/Tactical combat ability.

People who are very strong in one have shown to be able to overcome those stronger in the other.

Obi-Wan was not the strongest combative Force User. But he was a lightsaber master of the absolute highest level with impenetrable defense, he was a tough-as-nails, resiliant physical combatant, and he had maybe the best knack of any Force user we've seen for seizing tactical advantages. The only way you are beating this guy is if you can overpower him with the Force. Jedi Knight Anakin couldn't do that, and in fact got cut in half by Obi-Wan, so I think it's unfair to put him in a category above.

Also, Palpatine was more powerful than Windu and sort of manipulated events to his advantage, but Windu had him completely outclassed in the lightsaber duel and had an idiosyncratic advantage as as Force user- his ability to redirect dark energy back at the user through his lightsaber style. So in that sense, Palpatine really does not match up well with Windu.

On the other hand, I would not call Palpatine a very technically strong duelist. His technique has absolutely no order or regard for mechanics or defense. Obi-Wan would have no problem fending him off as a lightsaber duelist with his defensive technique. But Palpatine would have royally messed him up with the Force.

Well, i would absolutely call him a strong duelist. Killing three masters in seconds, and holding his own against both Windu and Yoda. Not to mention taking on both Savage Opress and Maul in the clone was. Now both Oppress and Maul are not top tier in force abilities, but Maul is a lightsaber specialist and trained by Palpatine.
While Obi-wan is a good duelist, he would lose against Palpatine in a lightsaber duel.

Why is Anakin ranked higher than Obi-Wan? At the end it was Anakin who got his legs and arm cut off, not Obi-Wan...

I think Rey is the new Apex Jedi. Because both her parents are Jedi. (Luke Skywalker & uh, Chora Rattama) Rey is accelerating on a whole new level. Good. Been waiting for this type.

Kylo will be less emo and have a normal red lightsaber. Because his "ancient" one will literally blow up in his face. (Seriously, did anyone read the circular logic of it's description in the illustration? I felt like someone was saying "Welll, likee, it's an ancient design but it's made of new parts, aand uhh it has cross-guards, you know, because of the ancient design, but they're actually vents, because the whole thing is unstable, because the kyber crystal is cracked, so it needs exhaust ports, but they also double as cross-guards/quillons!) No, it's because some a-hole artist had lunch w/JJ and said: "HURR DURR medieval lightsaber iz kewwl!" Actually I kinda like his lightsaber now, it's the truth behind it that pisses me off. Question: Why don't medieval swords have blades as cross guards? Anyway..

Snoke is either Plagueis or someone ancient who cheated death. I'm sure he'll have a skill we haven't seen yet. He's 7 feet tall right? He needs a staff saber.

Luke should already be a GRAND Master Jedi by now. He was a Knight 30 years ago, (which he achieved in a short time) has traveled to most Jedi temples (accompanied by Lor San Tekka, who told him all he knew being in the Church of the force), and has been communicating with Yoda, ObiWan and Old Anakin this whole time. (I swear to the Force, if they bring in Hayden C. as a force ghost I'm punching the movie screen).

Because it's meant to protect your hand, not to cut yourself while fighting ;) At first I disliked that new lightsaber, but right now I think it's just a primitive lightsaber built by someone who had little idea how to do it (there was noone to teach him how to do it properly, even Snoke). So there was too much power and had to be vented off somehow. And I like this idea.

Why not we can compare jedi powers and knowledge with colors like martial arts???I know jedi and siths are NOT martial arts BUT martial arts is knowledge and training skills that each student has.In martial art the black belt has different types of ranks of knowledge too.For me Luke is a Grandmaster. We don't see his power in this movie BUT it must be nothing we think about before.Maybe from the distance Luke is training Rey and wake up R2D2.This can be ONE new POWER that Luke has now...:).Maybe i'm right or not....

With this table below you can change the techniques section with jedi or sith knowledge with the light force or dark force...:)

Here in the black belt color there are nice ranks too...:).

This is ONLY my suggestion.I think this can help a little...:).
