We're about 5 weeks until the movie, but how soon will spoilers start to show up? 4 weeks? 3 if we're lucky?

What do you think? Will they allow reviews on December 14th after the red carpet premiere? And can we expect spoilers before then?

Inquiring minds want to know.... :D

I suspect we will see them as the first fans start to see them around the world.

When did the first teaser drop last year? Thanksgiving? I bet the film will be shown to super-select audiences that Holiday weekend because it's really the last holiday weekend before the film is officially released that it could potentially be shown discretely to Lucasfilm and Disney employees and, potentially, their extended families. It's the perfect time when everyone is together with family prior to the film's release. And if that happens, we'll definitely hear a few leaks if the film is shown. Like what happened to Luke and who is Snoke. That kind of stuff. Nothing would stop that from getting out. In the case of Daniel Fleetwood, I doubt any leaks will come out of his camp of survivors. Other than minor story-based leaks, I'd be really surprised if the film is leaked online. That would be a huge blunder if Disney allows that to happen, and really a huge criminal act. I hope that doesn't happen. But we'll be exposed to stuff planned by Disney and unplanned.

Haven't you been following 4chan or Reddit?? At least 10 people have seen the movie at this point. Sure, the movie they saw was completely different to each other- but they are LEGIT!

Wasn't it for Age of Ultron, or something like that, that they said that the press could make one tweet/post with the general impression but the reviews themselves were embargoed?

I expect a similar situation... They allow a minor "impression" post to pickup buzz, but the actual reviews are embargoed until the movie comes out or very very close by...

According to an article a few weeks ago critics will not see the film until 4 days before release.

    So Dec,13 or 14

I personally have a VERY sneaky suspicion that we're going to get a minute morsel about Luke...undecided as to the context, but I believe we'll hear something. I also expect that the context of that info will be unknown and thus, tell us nothing until we see it on the screen...but I believe there will be something. :)

There are no critic screenings for TFA. So there is no impression to give. Critics will begin seeing it at the premiere and therefore the earliest we will start to see any sort of impression will be the 14th.

Yes, I know about the critic screenings for award consideration..
I meant "general" press, such as collider or the schmoes...

There are no press screenings either. That was announced about a month ago. Premiere is the earliest any media or critics will see it.

Ahh ok... It's just that on Movie Talk they keep saying something like "we will probably be invited to watch first but we will also go see it on opening night"..

It's just wishful thinking on their part then :)

Unless they know something the rest of the critics don't. Or maybe they are referring to an invite to the LA premiere which is a few days before wide release.

I always took it to be that they assume that there will be press screenings... But you are right, it might be the actual premiere.

    Thanks for clarifying!

I am taking that with a heavy dose of salt (I work for a newspaper). It would be unprecedented and would lead to critics basically staying home. A critic can't easily do his or her job in an audience with a bunch of people waving around lightsabers and cheering. I have no doubt that is what Disney is saying right now but I would bet dollars to dougnuts that will be reversed, or they will send out screeners. Critics aren't generally expected to line up for general releases.

It's not without precedent. Movies are frequently released with no press screenings. Its just usually done when the movie sucks and they want to avoid negative press.

Yes. And those movies...often don't get reviewed. Want to make a wager? We can come back to this in December and I'll let you know whether our Chief Critic has seen the movie or not.

Hey you may be right. I'm just going off the chatter from the major movie critics.

But I'll put my credits where my snout is.

50 Credits says no press screenings occur prior to the World Premiere on December 14th?

    Does that work for you?

I don't know what part of "I know that is what Disney is saying" you all missed. Like I said, I will put real money on at the very least screeners going out to members of the press. There is about a 0% chance in my mind that they are going to just let Friday the 18th come without any of the major papers having a Star Wars review, which under normal circumstances is bumped-to-the-cover news in a tabloid paper.
    --- Double Post Merged, Nov 12, 2015, Original Post Date: Nov 12, 2015 ---
Wait, no. I never said there would be press screenings before the 14th. I said there would be before the general release date. Certainly they don't expect people to fly from Milwaukee and Chicago to LA to go to a premiere.

Ok, then I think we might be in agreement. I'm not saying they won't have any theaters reserved for press. I'm just saying it won't be out there before the premiere. No advanced press screenings. So, the 14th is the earliest we can expect any spoilers or reviews to start coming in.
