It's a long way off, but it would be interesting to see what everyone thinks will be the conclusion, or what they would like to see at the end of episode IX.

And let's assume the saga ends there - Lucas had mentioned a further trilogy a long time ago but I can't see it happening. Granted, there will be plenty of spinoffs.

    I see a few possibilities:

    1. The Jedi wins. The Sith is completely wiped out (or gone into exile forever).

    2. Nobody wins, we're left with a stalemate where the force is perfectly balanced.

    3. An epic battle where the protagonists win, and cue massive Galaxy-wide celebrations that make the end of ROTJ special edition look like a tea party.

    4. A more sombre ending, Das Boot style, our hero(s) has survived but a lot of people have died along the way. Almost like starting a new life and trying to forget the ways of the force.

I would be very surprised if it ends with all the OT characters surviving, but it will be interesting if any do (r2 / 3po inevitably will). I can see Solo and Leia being killed off early in the trilogy. I would personally like to see Luke end the cycle like ObiWan did.. Die with honor and forever be a Jedi ghost. I think ending it exactly the same way as ROTJ will feel like déjàvu, and the audience will need more than that. Perhaps show short clips of the life after.. Maybe a Jedi academy/temple reopened by our hero in Coruscant.

I just hope it will be a satisfying and deserved conclusion to what has been such a great story. At the same time, maybe a better way to go is to leave some questions at the end, and let people draw their own conclusion about what might have happened or will happen.

If the movies do well (and lets be honest...how could they not) I doubt they will end on either a completely somber or happy note. Some sort of status quo will be achieved, the latest evil of the sith defeated, but they will want to leave open options for future stand alone movies or perhaps SW: The next generation down the line. So my guess is another limited happy ending ala RotJ where there is a decisive victory but it is conceivable there are more stories to be told.

I always liked the way Gary Kurtz said RotJ was supposed to end......... with Luke Skywalker walking off into the sunset. I've heard a lot of people speculate that Luke will die in Episode 7 like Obi-wan in Ep. 4 and Qui-gon in Ep. 1. But to me if Luke does in fact die in the ST. It should be much more like Yoda, and die in Ep. 9. But the original ending idea that Kurtz spoke of always sounded vary cool to me.

Now that there is going to be a ST it would be a good time to re-insert the original RotJ ending.

I think with the strategy Disney has with Marvel they are applying that same mentality to Star Wars now -- a broadening, universe building story structure. In this case spinoffs to fill in other parts of the saga NOT central (IE Boba Fett tangent and perhaps a Han Solo origin.) With this in mind I still say that the ST will end with loose ends that will help set up phase 2 or Episodes X-XII.

I also think we'll see the Underworld TV series that got shelved. I think we're going to be inundated with Star Wars.

The beginning of the end of Star Wars will end with a few high budget box office flops. But the final end will be when the live action, laugh tracked Star Wars television series on Disney Channel gets bumped for the next stupid but cute singing American teenager sitcom.

Disney is going to milk this thing for all it's worth, until they've wrung it dry. The spin-off movies might start out good, but Disney will try to speed production and cut overhead like they always do. We'll eventually see crappy movies that are so geared towards kids that we'll remember Jar Jar fondly. And the inevitable live action Star Wars sitcom will be the final nail in the coffin.

Don't believe me? Have you seen what Disney's doing to Marvel?

I have great faith in Episode VII, but I also know Disney's formula - make a great movie, then follow it with three straight to DVD sequels before the audience can blink. Aladin II, George of the Jungle II, Land Before Time IX, Lion King 1.5? If you can tell me with a straight face that Disney's artists put even half the effort into any of those sequels as they did the originals, you're the best poker player I've ever met. Because you know it as well as I do - the sequals are nothing more than a money grab for Team Disney. Just a chance to cash in on the fame and fandom of the originals.

So yes, I expect great things from Episode VII. And I really hope VIII and IX are made with the same attention to quality. But the spin-offs and the efforts that come after that? That's where Disney will try to make movies on unrealistically smaller budgets, and that's how Star Wars will eventually die.

While I disagree with some of what you said. I do agree that Disney is gonna milk Star Wars. Like for example airing Star Wars Rebels - Spark of Rebelion on ABC with an added clip of Darth Vader just to get everyone of us Star Wars fans to tune in. That my friends is a page right out of George Lucas' book.

    "Obi-wan has taught you well."

While I can't really picture Star Wars ending completely at Episode IX and thus can't make any predictions on how Star Wars as a whole will end, I do believe that IX will be the very end of the story arc for any characters from the original trilogy.

I always thought it would be very fitting at the end of Episode IX if Luke died quietly and peacefully in much the same manner as Yoda did in ROTJ. I think it would be a very moving scene immediately after whatever evil dominates the sequel trilogy is defeated to see Luke slowly "disappear" into the force like his master before him with one last reprise of his original theme from A New Hope. This would be the perfect ending for him as a character (and probably get a few tears out of the audience). I really don't know if I can see Luke going out any other way.

As much as I wish Luke to have a peaceful death, I am deathly afraid he dies in VII in less then ideal circumstances. If not him then we lose Han Solo

The end of IX will be far too ambiguous for our liking. Star Wars is the sort of story you can't really give a solid ending to.

A lot of good points raised. While I also don't think it will ever really "end" (because of stand alones, extended universe stories etc), as somone else pointed out the story arc of the original trilogy has to ultimately come to a conclusion - whether it's in this trilogy or the next, because great stories end one way or another.

Star Wars isn't really like marvel (no disrespect to that franchise), because there will always be rehashed and new stories about those characters, wheras for SW, you tell the story once through the medium of movies or a TV series, and that's it. Main characters will potentially get killed.

Lucas once said SW was supposed to be ultimately about Vader, his fall to the dark side and redemption, then perhaps the ST trilogy is his legacy. In that sense it will should be wrapped up by IX.

I would love to see further movies beyond that, but I don't think they should be called "Star Wars" and have any connection to the original story arc.

I feel the Sequel Trilogy will wrap up all the loose ends and explain things that weren't explained in the Prequels. Like Anakin's origins and the legacy he and his family had on the galaxy as a whole.

As far as future Star Wars after the sequels, I'd say that we will get spinoff stories of our young heros. Like them hunting down bounty hunters and dark jedi and what not but, the Sith will be destroyed in the sequels or the force chooses to have balance and no one wins. Like the idea out there of an Obi-Wan spinoff trilogy. Maybe even a cartoon trilogy of the events between Episode VI and Episode VII or even a cartoon show. Clone Wars lasted about six years and the Sequels will take about that amount of time, think afterwards we could see a show on the events prior to Episode VII.

A bit random but, here are titles I could see for each episode in the sequels. (Includes one of which is out there as the real title)

Star Wars Episode VII: The Ancient Fear
Star Wars Episode VIII: Rise of the Sith
Star Wars Episode XI: Balance of the Force

I really think it all depends how successful this trilogy is because it wouldn't shock me if they did Episodes 10,11,12. If the ST is running out of steam by Episode 8 and the box office has a severe drop from Episode 7, then they may end it with Episode 9 with of course the Jedi winning and focus on other stories. If Episode 8 & 9 are still doing huge box office, why wouldn't they do another trilogy with the NEXT generation......

If Luke dies at the very end it has to be heroic. His death will be a sacrifice to bring balance to the force...forever.
With his last breath he is seeing all of his old ghost force friends welcoming him with a smile.

A main character walking off into a (twin?) sunset will be a nice way to wrap it up, because that kind of ending is so ingrained as a definitive ending. Kind of. I feel the sequel trilogy - if it is indeed the last of this particular Star Wars story - needs a definitive closure. Kind of like Jedi had, then.
