I tend to agree here. Disney will no doubt make back their investment in Lucasfilm's acquisition and some with the sequels and spin-off's. If the money keeps rolling in, I too can foresee another trilogy with the new generation of characters. No doubt that Ep.7 and treatments for 8 & 9 will provide an arc for potentially more movies. I also agree that by Ep.9, the main characters of the original series will either die or be in permanent excile or retirement so their story arcs will be resolved. I think that their offspring could certainly be the centre of a new trilogy in any case, carrying on the Skywalker &/or Solo lineage.

I have a feeling that franchise fatigue is going to creep in quick if Episode VII is anything less than stellar, mindblowing, and fresh.

All of the remaining Jedi (10 or so) and all of the dark side force users (a couple dozen) with their Sith lord are drawn to Morriband in one final winner take all conflict. The Jedi arrive in the Millennium Falcon guns blazing. An epic light saber battle ensues with the Jedi making quick work of a few dark side force users. At the end it becomes apparent that the last few Jedi can't defeat the dark side force users. Leia and her daughter secretly hid aboard the Millennium Falcon and exit the ship by igniting their light sabers (they both previously have not been shown to have Jedi training in the ST). They're shown kicking some ass, but soon all that is left is Luke, Leia, and her daughter. They make a last ditch attempt to flea in the Millennium Falcon. Leia's daughter is struck down by the Sith lord.

Leia boards the Millennium Falcon to fire the engines, but Luke pauses and does not enter. He realizes that one way or another it must end here. He uses the force to close the ramp. Leia tries to lower the ramp to no avail and races to the cockpit window and screams "No Luke! You can't do this!" as a dozen dark side users quickly approach Luke. Luke is looking back at Leia with sadness in his eyes. R2-D2 taps into the controls of the Millennium Falcon and the ship takes off. Leia is still clinging to the window and gets a parting view of Luke battling against the full strength of the dark side. Luke goes into a rage and holds his own for a brief time but then begins to become overwhelmed. Luke is barely hanging on. He drops his light saber into the dirt then drops to both knees. The fighting stops. The dark side forces users gather around in a circle as we see the Sith lord approach Luke in the middle. He says "The all powerful Grand Master Jedi Luke Skywalker is bowing to the power of the dark side. Finally I get to witness the end of the Jedi. Just as my master had foreseen." At that moment a new figure with a black cloak cuts through the circle and stands next to the Sith lord.

He flips back his hood and we see that it is Darth Plagueis and he says, "We finally meet young Skywalker. I created your father to end the Jedi and the Sith, but his attachment and fear of loss made him too weak to succeed." Luke says, "You underestimated my fathers strength in the force as you do mine." "Fool. I have complete control of the force!" Then several quick bolts of lightning suddenly reign down from the sky and in an instant wipe out the surrounding dark side force users and the Sith lord. Plagueis force grabs Luke's light saber and ignites it. We see it turn from green to red. Plagueis says, "This is my galaxy and will rule it forever!" He lifts the light saber above his head and motions to strike down Luke but he is caught by surprise. Behind Luke appears the force ghosts of Obi-wan, Yoda, and Anakin. Luke stands up and says, "I am bound to you and your fate shall be the same as ours." The force ghosts merge with Luke. "Ha ha ha. IMPOSSIBLE!" says Plagueis and he strikes down Luke with fury. Luke disappears and complete silence surrounds Plagueis. Then after a few moments we see him grin ear to ear. But the grin on his face soon turns to a look of confusion. He begins to dematerialize from the inside as beams of light exit his body. Then in a bright flash he's gone.

The force that was awaken in EP7 has now truly been balanced and thus put to rest. Leia and her daughter feel a great sensation and then realize that the force has left them. When they return home they visit Luke's wife. They tell her that Luke has died and she says "I know, but a part of him will always be with me." as she rubs her belly. The End.

While it might be an attractive idea to write a poetic ending for Luke in IX, given the actor's relatively young age and the fact that he has not been written to have a functioning Jedi academy in episode VII, meaning that all the young Force users still need to finish their training with him, I don't think Luke will die in this trilogy. I think at the end of IX there will be enough experienced Jedi that they can reestablish the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and reopen its academy with Luke as its head, leading to a Jedi Search/Academy spinoff or mainline Chapter X.

Another reason I doubt Luke will die in this trilogy is that almost certainly Han Solo (and possibly Chewbacca) be killed off, not so much because they couldn't think up new things to do with the characters but because both Harrison Ford and Peter Mayhew are getting quite elderly. They could hire someone else to play Chewbacca, but there isn't much point if Han is gone, though introducing a young Wookiee Jedi or somesuch might not be a bad idea. It would be better, frankly, to kill off the characters definitively in a film than to risk, in the lengthy interval between films, one of the septuagenerians passing away or going into a nursing home or otherwise being unable to film, and then having to announce the characters' deaths in the opening crawl. ;) I would prefer that Han and Chewie hold out until IX, then go out in a Thelma and Louise-esque blaze of glory, fighting for a noble cause.

Another reason I think Luke will survive the trilogy is that I don't see them killing Leia, unless it is for cheap shock value at the beginning of a film, which I would hate with a white hot passion. By the same token, though, I don't see them leaving her alive without Luke and Han, unless she becomes some sort of Kai Opaka-esque wise woman, which could happen if she finally does begin to use the Force and works her way up to Jedi masterhood. But it's a bit late in life for that, so maybe not.

So I think that at the end of the trilogy: All the 'offspring' characters will be alive - Daisy, Domnhall, Lupita, Oscar. Boyega could go either way - becoming a Jedi master or dying heroically. Domnhall will flirt with the dark side, then be pulled back by his own basic goodness and by the rest of the scoobs. Darth Driver will die in IX. I think Han and Chewie will die in IX if not before, but I think they will die at some point. I hope Han reconciles to Leia in a 'you all know this means Han is about to die' scene. Gwendolyn Christie will be the first to be offed, in VII. I am sure there will be other characters we will encounter whose fates we will care about, but we haven't seen them yet. ;)

I think by the end of episode 8 the OT characters will either be dead or moved on. I'm putting my money that Han dies for the sake of the rebellion (new republic?) in episode 7 since Ford has publicly voiced his dislike of continuously playing Han so I think the only way they could get him in this film is if they agreed to him not being in any sequels. Luke and Leia might either die at the hands of the Sith in episode 8, or be more focused on training the new Jedi recruits at a new Jedi Academy (akin to Yoda in the prequels) and preoccupied with that to have much significant screen-time.

All this leading up to episode 9, where we have been introduced to the new characters for the ST and gotten comfortable with them enough to have them be the focus of the final film in the main storyline. My guess is that it will focus on Luke's child(ren) as the saga so far has centered around the Skywalker family. A final, epic finale of a battle takes place in episode 9 between the new Jedi Recruits and rebel/new republic armies and the Sith and their army. The good guys win of course. There won't be a real cliffhanger ending but the Sith will not be completely wiped out, leaving potential for further stories of Dark Side uprisings in the EU/ spinoffs.

I agree that Disney is in for the money but look at your example Marvel is better than ever!. Marvel has always had silly kid offerings as well as darker themes. That is still going on. Add to that the fact that Marvel pretty much owns the box office and people everywhere are trying to catch the same magic.

I hope that it will end like Dragon Ball or other fun children stories: ''And then, elderly Luke Skywalker went on to live trough another vast adventures.
Until we meet again!'' - which in all cases translates: ''Jesus Christ, I am half dead after 15 years of work, so other adventures will go on in your head!'' (in case of Japanese manga week by week serialization) or ''They acomplished the main plotline and we don't want to kill them or end their story definitely, so we can come back later an cash in with the characters you like so much!'' (Western attitude)

    - in children mind: ''Wow, I can't wait for more stories!'' ''Mom, grab me those action figures, I am going to live up trough more stories with them!''

    In the end, everybody wins!

PS: I wonder in the EU material, how Luke Skywalker looks the same for 50+ years....

I think actually that is a very good way to end. Imagine CHEWIE, REY, FINN, POE, AND LUKE that somehow LIVES ON, on an epic final scene that mirrors a new hope? a lot of fans crying like babies and disney with tons of money.

what about: VII - The Force Awakens / VIII - Legacy of the Shadows / IX - The Fate of the Light

Maybe "the Force" dies and now everyone has to conquer the galaxy the old fashioned way, instead of as supermen. :p

I think episode 9 will end on a cliffhanger like all the old characters dying and the rebels finally winning against the empire with the new jedi's creating a jedi school passing on what they learned from luke and his force (hologram).

The Millenium Falcon flies off with our heroes when suddenly a massive space serpent flying through space gobbles it up, a grizzled old nerf herder looks sadly up towards the sky and whispers "there's always a bigger fish"

Star wars could only end if something cataclysmic happens to earth, causing most art to disappear.

Commercially, Star Wars will end when there's no more big money to be made from it. Artistially it's got a major-sized pair of legs and fans could keep writing and drawing new fiction for many decades and even into the next century. Look at how small but fanatical communities perpetuate works by authors who died 100 years ago, or swathes of new Cthulhu fiction in novels, short stories, rpgs and low-budget films. Possessing a simple but emotive formula grounded in classic myhtological tropes is the key to longevity, and also a staple of Star Wars.
