I messaged the magazine and asked if they could release the clean hi-res image of Luke. Sadly, they don't have the distributor's permission. I suspected that's the case but I thought I'd try anyway. ;)

There's a clean version on Reddit, but not hi-res.

Yeah, I saw it. It's pretty good but official would be better.

    I loved it.

I'm tired of the brown robes from the prequels.

But it looks different with the dark poncho. Kind of remind me of Luke from ROTJ.

I really like the picture but Luke in that picture isn't just mad. He's eyes are filled with sorrow. I can see him bursting into tears any moment.

Great picture! So, is the consensus that the red is Kylo's lightsaber?

It could be, but it could also be showing the dark mixing with the light, which represents Luke currently.

*shrugs* I'm a deep woman, and I get symbolism. Rian uses a lot of that in TLJ.

It's likely Kylo's saber, but the lighting is similar to Han and his scene too, showing it could go both ways for them. Same probably with Luke and him.

I've been saying it since TFA, everyone one needs to keep in mind that when Rey first sees Luke on the island, a variation on the imperial march begins, and then the Kylo Ren theme plays clearly.

As Luke turns and pulls down his hood, the music fades. When Rey pulls out the lightsaber, "binary sunset" begins to play softly and then swells as Luke's face changes from suspicion to one of disbelief and then agony.

That musical cue always bugged me because to me, it was implying that Rey flipped Luke from the Dark Side to the Light merely by pulling showing up and offering him his old saber. It was taking what in any other SW movie would be massive story and character challenge and reducing it to another Mary Sue moment for Rey.

I have thought better of it.

We've seen Luke in this outfit in other pictures (notably at SWC), and I agree his eyes are really haunting almost black. MSW had a sketch of this outfit before SWC.

I think this is his rain and travel gear. Maybe he only wears the tan robes for ceremonies or at specific times (he put on his finery because he felt the presence of the Falcon?)

I don't believe the "Luke is evil" or "Luke is the villain" theories.

I think he has found a way to exist without allegiance to Light or Dark. To not be a zealot about the Light and perfection. He believes the self-righteous and myopic Jedi order must end because embracing all of existence is the path to peace in the galaxy. The Jedi sought perfection and instead sow problems due to the enemies that rise from darkness which the Force wants to bring balance to all life. If the Jedi don't only embrace the Light, then Darkness will have no power to arise any more.

Luke is Yin and Yang now. The Alpha and the Omega. He can act from Light or Dark now, thus the musical cue.

He left because he needed to end the cycle and felt all he could do would be invite more powerful Dark responses. He wants stop the wars of Light and Dark by stopping them going forward.

I think this is what the dark robes and that kind of expression are hinting at.

He will train Rey, but not to be a Jedi, to be the first of a new, balanced and farther-seeing type of Force Sensitive.[/QUOTE]

I also think he was in "Dark Luke mode (TM)" when Rey shows because he definitely felt Ben murder Han, and if anyone in the galaxy would recognize the Falcon and be able to notice that only Chewie was on it when he arrived (and thus Han's absence), it'd be Luke.

He may be praying or whatever for Han and wanting revenge but trying to meditate it away. Maybe he's so far gone because of the guilt for not being there to save Han or training Ben better or whatever.

I really, really want the costume switch to be acknowledged and the reason be meaningful. I want the same for the opening conversation in TLJ, but 10 times as much impact explaining what Luke is thinking when TFA ends. I adore Hamill's performance and can't wait for his real return in TLJ

Alrighty then... So, I've been lookin' at this photo for awhile now, zoomin' in an' lookin' at different parts
    Like it Lots.
The cut of it looks to me similar to his RotJ tunic or that of Count Dooku's as other good folks here have also said.
    The fabric caught me... Woven.
First thing come to mind as I looked was Zeyd-cloth.
Now, I Ain't stretchin' one thing to nor into another. Just sayin' that's what came to mind.
Also has a bit of a midieval look about it, just that fabric, I mean to say.
