My thoughts exactly.

His hands are tensed. His face is stern. Emanating some serious heat here. Interestingly, the red light coming from the bottom left . . . but MOST interestingly is that Luke is clearly focused at something on the ground.

Could this be Rey? Could this be his students during a flashback?? Could this be that Kylo has just defeated someone as Luke approaches???

THAT would be frigging AWESOME!!! Luke standing over a wounded, defeated pupil with Kylo next to him completely unable to turn on Luke - knowing shits about to get real. Luke stands, suppresses his emotions of rage and anger, and then focuses on the person to his right.

 

Yeah, it definitely has a medieval/fantasy vibe. Funnily, in this shot the tunic even looks like mail.

Man, I love this costume so much. He looks absolutely perfect in it. The white robe was cool for the TFA scene, but I can't help thinking that, from a larger perspective, it was kind of a disservice on Abram's part. I mean, that costume looks tailored (no pun intended) for standing and looking majestic. I'm glad Rian wasn't afraid to go for something radically different to fit his vision. Now the costume itself seems to reflect Luke's mindset.

Huh, I'm wondering what's the pretext for this change in the film. It would be awkward if the outfit just changed from scene to scene, but bringing much attention to it could feel heavy-handed.

Yes. Would be best if this change comes in the Third Act when he is ready for his reveal. White and brown while training, back to the ROJ dark look when ready to confront.

 

...lookin' at the belt too... Wonder if it might be... the same as the one worn 30 years back. The belt plate is Gone... just the hook.

Oh, I think it's much, much earlier. My guess is that we're getting like 2 or 3 scenes of Luke in the TFA costume. He wears the brown outfit in the majority of stuff we've seen so far.

 

Agreed! The attention to detail is great. The shirt underneath suggests chain mail which is a nod to knighthood. Wonderfully done.

 

It's actually a knit-like material with a pattern similar to Ren's and Rey's I think, but I do see the chain mail pattern too.

 

Yeah totally looks like a knight, as opposed to a Samurai. I like that. I always thought it would be cool to have a Jedi Knight. You know? Yes it is still reminiscent of his ROTJ tunic. I like it I like it a lot.

 

He looks a little... unfriendly here. This the Luke that looks like he might just as soon be a bounty hunter as be a Jedi

 

Imagine Luke suddenly pulls out Red blade, Vader's, hold secretly all the time there below.
People will freak out(and everyone around him in the film of course).

Like..he knows what he needs to do and now finally has strength to do it?
Determined, and yeah i would love to see him with a red lightsaber...or a crossguard one.

 

He was always powerful. I fear him not to becoming... to powerful. ..

 

That would be a good thing I think. If we are shown how hard it is to balance your own darkness. And if they showed Luke struglling with it...he who has always been an epitome of Light, i think it would add up to the whole story.

Its def hard to see...but hell yeah...the wide belt there...and the long tunic? Looks like Ren from tfa...the weave is very similar..
I wonder if this capey thing he has over his shoulders has a hoodie...
Its so reminds me of rens outfit....what if it is Knights of Ren uniform....and Luke was the former Master of the knights of Ren??

 

It does have a hood.

 

The photo of him next to Rian deft shows there is a hood. Seems that that dark colored tunic is an... over-tunic. The hood looks to be of the same fabric as the over tunic but a lighter tobacco brown an attached to the garment worn under.
