Just to help another thread get back on track, I guess we could use this thread to discuss whether or not Rey is a "Mary Sue" character. I know that some people may find this term offensive, and some may be offended that some find the term offensive.

So, whatever party you fall in, just please be respectful. Thanks a bunch, and hopefully this thread actually becomes somewhat productive.

May the Force be with you.

Oh, and you get two votes in the poll. I think that's a good amount to cover the bases of someone who agrees with multiple points without being contradictory.

She's standard Star Wars lead protagonist.

technically a Mary Sue is a reader insert created for wish fulfillment purposes. so no.
it's also developed negative connotations of "overpowered and flawless" as a means to overcompensate for disempowered female characters. so no.

It is slightly funny to me (sorry if anyone is offended) that if you google "Mary Sue" Rey is the first most searched character who pops up in the left under "people also searched for".

Clearly there is a strong internet presence involving her and the term.

    which for her..kinda sucks

According to Max Landis, "Mary-Sue" is her last name.

Definitely, it's a debate people have been having since pretty much the film's release.

And I do disagree with it (assuming if someone has read this far they've already voted- if not, don't let this OP's opinion dictate your own! :)). But I also see how the debate exists, for sure.

According to the Google search @sbs87 mentioned, along with Rey, other "Mary Sues" in fiction include Harmonie Granger of Harry Potter, Bella Swan of Twilight, and Slenderman... FUCKIN SLENDERMAN!!

Bella of Twilight is the only one that actually counts I think.
She was literally put in as wish-fulfillment by the author.

Hermoine is a wiz-kid witch but she also messes up and has plenty of her own flaws. Very similar to Rey actually.

Looks pretty dumb. Funny they have Lovecraft as an "inspiration for" on there.
Lovecraft would have probably laughed at it. It's so generic.

To get this back on topic:

I'm guessing it comes up under Mary Sue searches because it seems to be something young people like and a lot of fanfic writers who are of a certain age probably research or like both.

Yeah the weird thing is there are a few instances where real life kids attempted to kill other kids because "Slenderman told them to". That's some weird sh!t right there.

So a Gary Stu? BTW where was this term in the -80s90s with all those action heroes.

If you ignore most of the script and plot yeah she is a Mary Sue:
Running away, needs saving, wants back to Jakku, get's a Lightsaber to the throat,, knocked out with the force, tortured, stranded in enemy territory, knocked unconscious by a tree, wow you gotta ignore a lot till you get into the over competent area.
