I Can't Believe I'm Asking This, But is Rey a "Mary Sue"?

+1 I rarely see people bring up how even though there were gaps between the OT movies Luke became a boss seemingly overnight. Not complaining about it just saying..lets be fair here..

I mean....it takes years to perfect a high kick like that!!!

I find it funny when the only excuse that people can come up with to try to defend Rey's incredibly overpowered Mary Sue character is that there are still two movies to go. Have you really even taken a moment to analyze how invalid that claim is? But let's follow that line of thought for all of those that loose it when people point out Rey's Mary Sueness. Ok, let's pretend that on the following movies we learn that Rey is a being created by the Force. Um....so was Anakin and he still needed Jedi Masters and didn't teach himself in minutes how to use the Force in mind tricks and in battle. So now let's pretend that Rey is from a bloodline of a family that's really powerful in the Force. Um.......so was Luke and even after being trained for a few weeks by the most powerful and wisest Jedi, he still had his butt handed to him by Vader and he never did in three movies what Rey did in one.

Sometimes I get the impression that just because some people point out the obvious many of you guys think that this means we hate Rey. Well I have to say that this is not the case with me. I like Rey alot and I really want to see how her story unfolds but even if I do like her I can't just turn a blind eye to what we all saw in the movie yet many of you keep denying.

Do I like her? Yes very much but come on let's be fair, as others have pointed out many times, Rey is AWESOME at everything and she is perfect at all. Rey has no flaws and everything she did in the movie was outstanding. Rey is a perfect: Fighter, scavenger, pilot, mechanic and Force user. Luke got hit various times and crashed his ship and so did Anakin but Rey is so incredibly awesome that she even showed Han Solo a thing or two about his very own ship. Rey has perfect feelings and she has no flaws in that department either. Luke was a crybaby, Han was a self absorbed dweeb, Anakin was a power hungry jerk who tried to pin his faults on everyone else but Rey is just made to be loved.

She is an orphan from a planet that almost nobody visits and she was raised by a jerk that we were shown that could care less about her and yet she somehow learned to speak Droid and Wookie??? Anakin was created by the Force and even he couldn't speak droid. The girl is awesome in every single way and never in SW had we ever seen such an overpowered and perfect character like Rey. She's better than any OT or PT character in terms of power, abilities and personality.

 

Sorry...didnt read all that. Too long...But a basic rebutal of the Mary Sue argument would be have Rey screw up? How do you know thats not gonna happen in 8 or 9?

 

i feel like people have given examples over and over, but they are never "enough" to satisfy anybody.
if someone had actually died when she unleashed the rathtars or if she'd been shot in the face for not actually knowing how to handle a blaster, or crashed the Falcon instead of just taking out half of Niima outpost with it, or maybe if Ren had cut off one of her arms then it would have been sufficient.
take Finn out of the movie and Rey would be dead right now several times over. but still that's not enough.

i'm saying people demand "evidence" of Rey's screw ups and no matter how you list them, they're never sufficient to demonstrate that she had flaws; she's still just perfect in the eyes of people who have slapped that odious label on her.

 

I dont think she is a mary sue. I think she screws up regularly.
