Even if Royle has your back that does not eliminate the face that so many people agree that Rey is a Mary Sue. You may not like that, you may not accept it but fans everywhere think this is the case. Just a simple look at Youtube and what do you find? This:
    zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.JPG
There are tons and tons of videos just like this and when you go and google the subject you find yourself with this:
    ! rey mary sue 2.JPG

Now this isn't me Merman speaking or Lady Oola but these are the opinions of tons and tons of fans and the lists go on and on. Now I picture you as a smart person GreyLo and you have to admit when you look at something like this that like it or not there are lots of people that think that Rey indeed is a Mary Sue. Even if all of these videos and posts were infact of only people saying that Rey wasn't a Mary Sue lets us know that if a ton of fans have to defend her then that means that they are fighting a ton of fans that indeed think she is one. The internet is filled with posts after posts of people claiming that Rey is without a doubt a all time Mary Sue and there is nothing you, me or anyone can do about that.

That you are free to think that Rey isn't a Mary Sue? Yes indeed! Have a blast and share it with your friends who agree with you but just because you, Royle and many others here don't think Rey is one that doesn't change the fact that there are so so many SW fans that disliked how much of a Mary Sue Rey is. Your opinion does not carry more weight than mine nor mine than yours and we have to get along accepting that there are in fact alot of people out there that don't agree with our point of view.

I still don't know who Mary Sue is. The thing is 83.3% of the people who've voted say she is DEFINITELY NOT, A Mary Sue. Thats even if you count the possibly's as a yes. Even if it was 50%, the whole argument is stupid. Until KK says, yes she is a Mary Sue this nonsense will continue. I understand that a perfect character is annoying, and unbelievable, but that doesn't make her a Mary Sue.

(sorry if my english is not perfect)

Rey to Finn in the movie "'I've flown some ships, but I've never left the planet." just after the Falcon/TIE scene.

Rey has already repaired and piloted a freighter similar to the Falcon before TFA, from the canon books "Before the Awakening" and "Rey's Survival Guide":

"I've flown lots of ships, at least by simulator. And one real ship, for a little while -- a Ghtroc 690 freighter. But I don't want to talk about that."

"Rey's 690 light freighter was a freighter that crashed on Jakku sometime before the Assault on Starkiller Base. It was found by the scavenger Rey, who planned to repair it and sell it to Niima Outpost junk boss, Unkar Plutt. Rey was assisted in the repairs by fellow scavengers Devi and Strunk, who ultimately stole the ship."

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Rey's_690_light_freighter

and in the movie she knows that the Falcon has not flown for years, she knows the reparations/modifications of Unkar Plutt in the ship so maybe this is not the first time in TFA that she's inside the Falcon.

She learned mechanics on Jakku with all the ships crashed, watch this:

and she's not perfect in mechanics, remember the "wrong fuses" and the Rathtars in the movie? That's because of her.

And also not perfect in flying things, remember when she "crash" into a "building" with the Falcon or touch the ground with it?

And for the lightsaber fight, Kylo is bleeding, he has been shot with a Wookie bowcaster (watch the effect of the weapon on Stormtroopers in the movie), he's not at full capacities and he doesn't want to kill her and she's trained to melee combat with her staff, and Kylo has compassion for Rey, proof from canon books again:

Rey vs. Unkar's thugs with her staff:

Remember that Jakku is a hostile planet and Rey is a survivor, she's alone, she has no family on Jakku, not like Anakin or Luke on Tatooine in Episode 1 or 4, Anakin was with Shmi, Luke with Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru (ok little Rey is with Unkar in the Force vision but he's horrible with her as seen in the movie).

and for the mind trick of the Stormtrooper/telekinesis on the lighstaber:

And we still don't know who is Rey/if she already have Force training in the past (and memory loss)/Force training in a past life (yeah the reincarnation thing is possible, we are in a space fantasy universe with Force ghosts).

"Because of the reflexes needed to control the pod as it raced around the course at breakneck speeds, as well as the dexterity needed to control the Podracer, all known Podracers, apart from Anakin Skywalker, were non-humans. Inhuman physical attributes, as well as extra pairs of hands, came in handy when trying to control the pod at its top speed of around 900 km/h."

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Podracing/Legends

If someone is a "Mary Sue" in the saga it's Anakin in Episode 1: he's an expert pilot/mechanic (as seen with his pod and C-3PO), he's the only human in the galaxy to win a pod race (and is the only one at the finish line), he destroy the big ship of the bad guys with only 2 missiles (and it's the first time he's controlling a starfighter in a space combat in the movie...) and all of this at only 9 years old.

Rey is 19 years old in TFA and she has been on Jakku "alone" for at least 10 years.

Wow, this thread has gotten testy since my last post. If you've watched these films and don't understand why Luke, and especially Anakin and Rey have seemingly limitless skills, then you clearly have no comprehension of the material, and probably need to reexamine your Star Wars fanhood.

Anakin Skywalker is a lifelong slave, forced to learn how to fix mechanical devices by his owner at a very young age, hence, he can fix things after months or years of doing so. UNBELIEVABLE! He has a skill. He's also been given the opportunity to pilot a podracer, more than likely forced to the first time, until he realized he enjoyed it. And it turns out to be easy for him because he's the future most power force wielder in history, though he never makes it to that point. He's got command of a supernatural ally, the force, so he has an abundance of skills and learns much faster than the average person.

Luke lives on a miserable dirt rock, smelting under two suns, in slavery to his grumpy old uncle. He's spent probably 13 of his 18 years building and fixing things so it's easy for him. And, like most people when they practice, can fly his Skyhopper. WOW. Making him a great pilot. And he's the next future most powerful force user, so he can literally do anything he puts his mind to in probably a short time.

And Rey. Well Rey is perfect for the same reasons. Isolation, starvation, scavenging, building, fixing for over a decade. And children learn twice as fast as adults. So her skills, and the fact that she is the next most powerful force user in the galaxy, gives her the necessary tools to be perfect at everything, especially the skills she's spent her life honing.

There are thousands and thousands of people in real life who are good at everything and they don't even have the force as their ally. It's not unbelievable at all that these three characters can do anything, Anakin and Rey especially. Watch Star Wars like you know something about the mythology, or have a semblance of imagination, instead of finding dumb "Mary Sue" arguments because your skill set is so low, and then perhaps you'll get why the main characters are often nearly flawless.

Woo! That was a good time.

If you have watched those films and really don't see how overpowered Rey is compared to Luke and Anakin than I really think that it is you who clearly have no comprehension of the material, and probably need to reexamine your Star Wars fanhood. Rey was better than Luke and Anakin in everything and she did in just one movie what it took them various to do and nore Anakin noe Luke self thought themselves how to use the Force just minutes after learning what it was. Both needed training, both were trained by some of the greatest Jedi masters ever and both failed in their main battle in their second movie which cost them a limb.

Rey was so incredible that not only did she teach herself how to use the force in just a few minutes but she also did something that NO OTHER Force user EVER did in the movies, she used the Force to ultra boost her abilities to get the power she needed to win a battle that she was loosing. Yoda couldn't do that, Vader couldn't do that but Mary Sue Rey did because she is so cute and special.

Agreed. And not only that but Luke and Anakin failed constantly. Both were scolded by their masters, both lost battles, both needed to be saved by others because if not they would have been killed, both got hit in space battles ect. Rey didn't need nobody as she was just so awesome that even when she was captured by the First Order, she had already outsmarted Kylo Ren at his own game, mastered by herself the Jedi mind trick in order to give a trooper three different commands and well on her way to escape even before Han, Finn and Chewie even got to her.

If it weren't for Rey BB-8 would have been captured by Teedo, if not for her Finn would have been captured by the FO, if not for her BB-8 would have been captured by Unkar Plutt's thugs, if not for her Han and Chewie would have been killed by the Guavians and Kanjiclub, if not for her Finn would have been killed by a Rathar, if not for her Han wouldn't have fixed his ship and if not for her beating Kylo in battle Finn would have been at risk of dying yet again.

Rey is cute and special. I'm glad Disney created such a heroic, likeable, funny, and mentally and physically capable character to show fans, especially children, that there's always a possible escape and future from a life of extreme hardship, and in the Star Wars universe, when that's coupled with an intense, powerful connection to the mythical force, the most incredible abilities and achievements are possibles. I'm so proud of Rey. I hope her amazing journey continues for a long time.

Again, this from someone who cried about Space Jesus.

    Let that sink in.

I'm not crying. Just reminding everyone the level of "intellect" they are dealing with when you try to critique another person's brain power.

    It's called a vocal minority.
Fewer people agree with the sentiment.
    But they talk louder.

It's easier to be seen going against the grain than with.

I can tell that many people are suffering from the side effects of this new drug and that's why they're angry about this incredible time to be a Star Wars fan. I hope everything clears up and you find a way in the future to enjoy this great time in our lives. And I also don't blame you. These symptoms suck. Sweaty eyelids! Bet your eyes burn constantly.

Take it outside if you must, but this kind of behavior doesn't belong here in the Cantina and you both know that.

Are you sure you are talking about Rey? I thought Jar Jar was the one to fill those shoes? Binks was cute and special, heroic, likeable, funny, and mentally and physically capable character to show fans, especially children, that there's always a possible escape and future from a life of extreme hardship! It's true that he lacked a powerful connection to the mythical force (unless all that Darth Jar Jar talk is true) and he was just a wee bit clumsy but good old Jar Jar deserves more love and respect than he is given!

So what if there was no poop in SW until he came along! So what if there were no farts in SW till Binks showed his face! We should all love Jar Jar cause he is the perfect example of what one must aspire to be and who knows........maybe he might even be connected to Rey in some way!

Rey, there is something meesa hasn't told you in a looooong time okeyday? Rey.......meesa is your father!

Wow...would the above quoted be examples of intelectual discourse between two adults?

Well. I read this in its entirety. So your counter argument is 'most you tube people think it so it must be true?' Seriously?
I form my opinion on my common sense. The closest anyone has come to proving 'rey is a mary sue' is arguing she is an imperfect mary sue which is a thing that defeats itself in the premise and as such cant be considered a valid addition to the discussion except as a definitive point against it.

Okay...for you Josh...I googled :) so here is explaind in a wall of text lol.
    An excerpt here:
"In other words, the term "Mary Sue" is generally slapped on a character who is important in the story, possesses unusual physical traits, and has an irrelevantly over-skilled or over-idealized nature."

    1. As of TFA Rey IS the story. Not just IMPORTANT to the story.

    2. Rey possesses not unusual physical traits. Most plain (hazel) eyes. Big ears. High forehead. Tomboy body. No boobs. Muscled legs. Unsexy outfit. No makeup. Facial scars. Sweaty patches under armpits. No table manners. Unsexy running...etc etc..

3.a) Over skilled she is not. Makes mistakes on a regular basis...her flying sucks until she adapts. F*ucks up with the rathars when she choses the wrong fuses. Bypassing a compressor on a completely unelegant and unexpert way....etc etc... @Niamor has better points

3.b) over idealized she is only in fanboys and fan girls eyes
She is imature, close minded, childish, inapt in forming deep personal conections with real people hence she lives in seclusion, vindictive, angry, proud, naive, idolizing smugglers, selectively compassionate and so on and so on blah blah...

    Aaaaaaand:
    4. WE DONT KNOW HER FULL STORY YET CUZ SHE AINT DEAD AND IT HAS BEEN ONLY THE FIRST MOVIE THAT INVOLVES HER!!!!

So...to any adult it is quite clear she ain't a Mary Sue and I completely agree with you too @Joshua Decker :)

Whoa!!! Respect man. You have far more patience than I do. Excellent points...All of them!

Yups! I agree. In all. Perhaps we should consider that there might be some deeper reasons why most people doubt her competence :)
    --- Double Post Merged, Jul 30, 2017, Original Post Date: Jul 30, 2017 ---
Lol....so are you arguing Jar Jar is a Mary Sue as well?
