It doesn't bother me that you make up convenient little anecdotes whenever you need to. It only demonstrates a weak thesis.

I notice you left out the most important part of the statement where I wrote "Disney won't care if that's a unfair deal, they will only care about $$$."

Maybe that's because you know my statement is correct and you wanted to argue instead of debate?
    Yes I did.
I don't hate Star Wars, I love Star Wars. I dislike E8 and I dislike the creative direction the franchise is going.

My criticism is sincere and genuine. I am not engaging in mindless groupthink like the E8 apologists are.

Most of the criticism towards TLJ was caused by the disjointed feeling of the movie which seemed to be more like a finale than the second part of the trilogy. Some characters were reduced to plotdevices while others behaved in ways that didn't feel in character compared to previous movies. Rian won't have these issues if he can build everything up from the ground which is good but I'd still prefer it if somebody else was to direct the trilogy instead of him. Someone called him "damaged goods" and I agree. The internet doesn't forget and even though the hate he gets online is disgustingly over the top I think Disney should find someone who is less controversial to be in charge of the new trilogy.

Never submit to rubes. Lucasfilm should never change their plans based on a vocal minority. It won't make them happy and it will just encourage more bad behavior. Also, it will be difficult to find talent if Lucasfilm become a slave to jerks online.

I suspect RJ will only direct the first film. Maybe the last one?

Maybe all three? I have a feeling they mostly kept it open in case he decided he wanted to shoot something else while the trilogy was still in active production.

He's definitely writing all 3 though, which I guess is more important.

Have you seen any of RJs other movies? "The worst characters" (Rose, Holdo and DJ are presume) were created to futher the main cast's character arcs, which were done very well.

This is an example of what I mean by damaged goods. Sure, he made a divise movie, creating a stir in the fanbase, probable pissing off 1/3 of the fans. Now, he doubles down on that in social media, with his "your Snoke theory sucks", "manbabies" and other snide comments. He should definetely be more professional.

Now, it has been a criticism that politics/agendas are too heavily inserted into the new SW. I really could not care less, to me it wasn't what ruined TLJ. I just want a good story that feels like SW.

But, how smart is it to bring Donald Trump and politics into SW? Yeah, we get you; you dont like Trump. Me neither. I just don't see the point of creating more division by making snide remarks about a guy who probably 45% of the US voted for. Not if you want to keep a broad appeal and not immeadiately alienate fans who can come together in SW even though they choose different sides in the political spectrum. I can only conclude that he stands by his philosophy in regards to wanting to create something divise, and that the criticism labeled at politics being too prominent in SW now holds some merit. This is just rocking the hornet's nest, and will not bring any fans back that holds different political views than the Hollywood elite.

And here's some exerpts on the following comments the thread from his account followers, the ones who hasn't been blocked yet, of course. Great, thanks for letting SW go down the drain with the ever more divisive and argumentative (besides ignorant, on both sides) US politics of today. Nothing good will come out of that.

"Snoke theory" pic is from 2016. The "manbabies" tweet referred to a single specific person, who was trolling another account at that time. Sorry, but your agenda falls apart right in the first paragraph.

This was a joke. That's the only reasonable way it can be interpreted. As I pointed out elsewhere, several Marvel directors have been more more outspoken about politics (Joss Whedon for example). This idea that people are supposed to act like toxic trolls aren't a problem is a problem. People seem more concerned with RJ addressing trolls than they are about the damage the trolls are creating. The actor who played Jar Jar contemplated suicide and other actors are having to shield themselves from the nastiness. This is a real problem that we shouldn't ignore anymore.

Those of us that love Star Wars aren't just gonna stand by and watch these losers drive off talented people anymore. It's sickening.

I agree RJ is better suited to make his own trilogy.

His own characters, his own setting, I think he'd be able to make something truly innovative within the SW universe.

I also think he made his task much more difficult in the aftermath of TLJ. Had he not made TLJ, every SW fan would have went to watch it opening weekend. Now, a portion of it will wait for spoilers or just outright refuse to watch it.

I don't consider people like these fans. I love Star Wars.. They've made content I didn't like and I'm sure they'll do so again. I kept watching Star Wars after Attack of the Clones. If that portion is so upset with The Last Jedi they're going to stay home then I don't think they're Star Wars fans anymore. They're right when they use this hashtag #NotMyStarWars.

Trying to make these type of people happy or to bring them back into the fold is a fools errand. Sure, they'll like some stuff, but they're going to complain loudly every time they don't like something. It's like trying to keep a toddler happy.

RJ may be a director of a Star Wars movie and will have his own trilogy, but that doesn't mean he isn't allowed to comment on the current political environment in the US. I'm not going to comment on that because I don't want this thread to dissolve into a giant political discussion, but RJ should be allowed to have free reign over his own personal Twitter account and other social media avenues. Mark Hamill makes just as many jokes, if not more, and yet the same people who would say RJ is putting too much SJW stuff into Star Wars would be head over heels to have Mark come back in episode 9. RJ and any other creator at Lucasfilm is there to do a job and what goes on in their personal social media accounts shouldn't matter as long as they still do their job. If somebody is going to skip a film because the director doesn't agree with their own political views, then that is an issue for that person. Personally, I could care less about who these creators support politically or what they do on their personal accounts so long as good Star Wars content is being produced. Now if RJ created a series and named the main villain Ronald Strump and it turned into a giant political bashing film, then I would have issues with him, but there's no chance of that happening.

    You're absolutely right about this.

The biggest problem thus far, is that fans had a preconceived notion about what TLJ should've been, and then attacked RJ because of what it WASN'T in their minds. Keep in mind, I saw the OT when it was originally released, and have been a diehard fan ever since, and I wasn't that impressed by TLJ, and in fact, was a bit irritated about some of the things I had to see, but Rian is definitely not a bad film maker by any stretch, but I do think that he needs his own playground to create something, and I think that he can do a fine job....away from the saga.

Show us something new, like R1 did, but with Jedi...and lightsabers!! :)

I was definitely one of those people who went into TLJ with how I thought everything was going to go and then was massively upset at the film and RJ after I left the theater. I've seen the film multiple times now and while it still isn't one of my favorites, I appreciate it for what it is from a visual aspect and from a unique storytelling approach. The idea of booting RJ without really letting him stretch his legs is a bit silly and I seriously doubt that the criticisms he gets for TLJ are going to be completely ignored when it comes to his new trilogy. Obviously some of the criticisms like too much diversity and the hate that comes from that crowd can and should be ignored, but I do think he will take some of what the fans liked about TLJ and what they didn't like and use that to create a fun and thought provoking original story that fans can get behind.

So if they made a SW filmed and dubbed it "The closest thing to AotC!" would you go see it first day, opening weekend? If they made a trilogy using the pacing, similar style of script, humore ect.. and ideas that AotC used, and you watched the first one and were as impressed as you were upon viewing AotC, would you keep going? If you chose not to torture yourself, would that mean you're no longer a real SW fan?

I've never called out someone as not being a SW fan regardless if they like or dislike something SW. I think the truth is, SW means different things for different people. The fans appreciate different things about SW, as the galaxy is varied and that's a good thing. For me, if someone chooses not to watch a movie/trilogy, there really is no issue. Maybe that installment just didn't touch on the aspects of SW that particular fan enjoys. I don't believe that person looses his SW license due to feeling that way and making a decision to spend his or her money elsewhere.

I think it's true that you can't please all fans, but I think those at LFL need to realize (and honeslty, I think they probably do) that a person's dislike of a SW installment does not mean they can't be satisfied, it simply means they've missed the themes those particular fans enjoy. For a single movie, or even a trilogy, that could be acceptable. I would say R1 and Solo (haven't seen it yet, but everything I hear is indicative of that) are attempt to appease that portion of the fan base that doesn't appreciate the story being told in the saga. It takes on different aspects of the SW universe that some who enjoy the saga, don't value as much in the stand alones.

This whole SW every year thing is a new phenomenon, so I think to some extent Disney should stay the course and let fans get their sea legs. There's going to be plenty of SW for everyone to like, unfortunately some will miss and maybe even miss badly for some fans. With a movie every year, they can survive that, it just might take fans a bit to catch on and get used to the idea that they may not like some SW product now and then.

I'll be curious how Disney markets the new series. The sequel trilogy and Rogue One were pretty easy to market since they were essentially things we already know. I wonder if Disney will want at least well known actor for these films.

That would depend on what the trilogy would be about and what Disney's marketing people think brings people to the theatres. Right now I assume that we'll see lightsabers lighting up, spaceships firing laser, bad guys in cool armour and some cliche lines about "truth" or "destiny".

I think the guy is a good director, but I'm not sure about his ability to write. That is, in my opinion, where he needs help. They should have had JJ and Kasdan write TLJ and just have Rian direct it. Everyone mentions his work on Breaking Bad, but he didn't write those episodes. I think he definitely got some great performances out of the actors in TLJ, but the script was, in my mind, weak.

The good thing, if this trilogy actually does happen, is that he won't have to take over from someone. As long as it has Jedi in it, and lightsaber duels (and better editing of said lightsaber duels) then it should be okay (I hope).

Lke @DailyPlunge said, I'm a fan of Star Wars and they have made films and books I didn't like. I always come back because, at the end of the day, I'm a fan.

This! Cobbler, stick to your last! Rian is a really good director but that doesn't mean he's a good screenwriter. Why some people praise his screenplay like it was some sort of masterpiece is beyond me. I mean just look at the impossible plot structure of plot A) Rey on Anch-To and plot B) the Raddus being chased by the Supremacy. While Rey stays a couple of days if not weeks on Anch-To we are told that the Raddus only has about 18 hours of fuel left. Not only are these plotlines constantly inter-cut suggesting they take place simultaneously... We actually know for a fact that they take place at the same time since Kylo and Rey communicate in real time via the force thereby connecting plot A and plot B. This means that Rian didn't even remotely keep track of time in his two main plotlines which resulted in packing a couple of days/weeks on Anch-To into 18 hours of the Supremacy chasing after the Raddus. This is an absolute Rookie mistake. As a result I'm not really looking forward to him writing the screenplays for the upcoming trilogy...
