Note: I have not read the rest of the thread, so I apologize if I'm saying the same things as other people.

I agree with this 100%. I did not like TLJ. I felt like RJ was irreverant to the OT characters by making Luke a grumpy old man who threw fits because Rey wants the same things he wanted, to make her own way in the galaxy, and be a change agent against an oppressive regime and help good defeat evil, and by not addressing the connection between Luke and Leia even if he had only done it through the force, a la the novelization. Don't get me started on the stupid Canto Bight crap, I just didn't like it. BUT, was the story (that he wrote and I didn't like) carried out phenomenally? Absolutely the imagary and story TELLING was amazing....(except for snoozer Canto Bight).

If he hasn't been canned (which he should for what he did to Luke/Leia) let him stick to original stories.

BTW, has anyone seen his music video??? A_MAZE_ING.

So, I just want to clarify, if you say you didn't like TLJ, you are a troll? Really?

    ...okay?

No. It’s because the majority of what you wrote in your post was the same complaints that have been repeated over and over again for the last year and this isn’t the thread for that.

This runs counter to many narratives, but the "grumpy Luke" we see in this trilogy was originally imagined by George Lucas.

Having a Luke that is plagued by the betrayal of a student isn't what I was reffering to in being irreverant to the character. Him refusing to help his sister in her time of need is

Actually, it's the perfect place for it. It's a thread about whether or not RJ is better suited for a non-skywalker saga set of films, and those are my opinions on why he is YES, better suited for something else. I'm sorry if you feel that you've heard it to much....I started the post by saying I have not read the entire thread, and if you are so closed minded that you insist no one participate if they haven't been here all along and insist that no idea is shared by more than one person, you don't really even have the CHANCE of hearing an original thought....

I'm sorry if I misunderstood, but I was just responding to what you wrote. You stated that RJ made Luke grumpy. He didn't. Lucas conceptualized Luke in exile long before RJ was involved.

If Lucas was thinking "Colonel Kurtz" then that's even darker than the Luke we saw in this trilogy.

I don’t have a problem with you sharing your views on The Last Jedi specifically, it’s just where you share them and this thread ain’t the place for it. I guess me wanting the thread to be relevant to the topic is pretty close-minded, huh? And yes, I will go back to drinking my Kool-Aid; it tastes much better than salt.

uh...the only thing we have anything to go off of are the movies he's directed, which is what? Looper, Brick and TLJ, the first 2 aren't relevant to the discussion.

This is sort of Rian about everything SW, but since this is one of the most active treads, I am posting this here:

You don't think analyzing a directors full body of work is important when deciding if they would be suited for something? If anything I would say they are more important than The Last Jedi is for deciding how Rian Johnson may structure his own trilogy.

A lot of directors have reoccurring tropes and themes throughout their films. Nolan loves to have the secret/criminal brother and dead/dying brunette wife. In almost every one of his films it bleeds over. Guess what works it's way into Batman....

Spielberg was borderline obsessed with fatherhood in his early years. Dads who struggle to be there for their families, dads who are frankly just terrible dads. It's a major thread in Jaws, ET, Close Encounters, Last Crusade, Hook, Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds...

You would be silly to not take these into account if they were making their own Star Wars films.
Marvel didn't discount What We Do In The Shadows, Boy or Hunt for the Wilderpeople when giving Taika Waititi the Thor franchise. And his sense of humor and style that is in all of his work shows up big and it was the most universally loved of the Thor movies.

You don't give a movie to Kenneth Branagh if you aren't ready for some big over the top acting scenes with epic qualities.

I find it curious that people think The Last Jedi is view by some as some huge twist or turn in Star Wars. There were surprising moments, but nothing out of line with a Star Wars film. Really, the biggest head-scratching moment for me in this trilogy is Han Solo's death. It seems to only serve the purpose of making Kylo Ren a villian, but there a lot better ways of doing that than Han Solo's story ending at the hands of his own son.

I can understand not being happy with story choices, but The Last Jedi didn't mess with the Star Wars heritage.

I like to go to the movie to see a good story, to be surprised, to laugh, and to be entertained. If I wanted to see the same old Star Wars film over and over I can just watch the OT.

I been really hard on RJ, not that I matter. I think he is extremely talented and could make great Star Wars movies. He obviously was not the right pick for EP 8. They should leave future SW Origin movies to Lucas or Dave Filoni to write.

Dave is the spiritual successor to George Lucas. He really understands Lucas Story and adds to it masterfully. It is hard for any director to capture the Magic of another but Dave really did it.

Rian could create awesome SW movies that don’t impact the Original Lucas stories.

This is another strange take because no other director has worked as closely with Lucasfilm and Filoni than Rian Johnson when he wrote TLJ. To me The Last Jedi was the closest thing we've got to a Dave Filoni type Star Wars film. It's also not a surprise then that Lucasfilm was very happy with TLJ.

I think the question is clearly: should he direct Saga movies or his own trilogy? He's already been chosen and approved for more movies, so the question is should he focus on a existing storyline or something orginal. I say original...and I'll just delete the rest since you don't want the details of my opinion since you don't want "newb" opinions.

I owe some of you and apology. It rubbed me the wrong way when I was labeled a troll, as I was not sidetracking the thread at all and I was not trying to intentionally inflame anyone. I reacted poorly. I shouldn't have done that. It's not the Jedi way.
