My only thing I crave for this film is to be set anytime before The Phantom Menace, I want to see that so badly on the big screen. I'm a big TLJ fan so I'm pretty hyped for this.

We've already had a Star Wars film (stand-alone, not trilogy) without Jedi and it did pretty good at the box office. So, IMO, depending on the story line I think it's possible and could be successful. Personally I'd rather see them, the Sith or other another force user group.

Force users? I'd say almost certainly.

Jedi specifically? I'd say a significant percentage no of like 35% or higher. He could be going to a place or time or both that doesn't deal in that denomination.

the OP question really makes you think, what is Star Wars? or, what is needed to make a movie feel like Star Wars?

spaceships, lasers, powerful theme music, good vs evil/morality themes, fun adventure, the Force, droids, creatures/aliens: these have been included and/or referenced in every Star Wars movie to date, so i feel like RJ will likely keep these elements.

as for the Jedi/Sith, or having people actually use the Force, who knows? when he talks about an uncovered portion of the galaxy he may very well be coming up with something totally unique.

however, i feel like the Jedi and lightsabers are almost synonymous with, and are such a huge part of, Star Wars as a whole and what people love about it. hell, a portion of the UK's population said their religion was Jedi!

as a fan, i definitely want more lightsabers and Jedi. i like the bounty hunter/smuggler/pilot type characters in Star Wars well enough, but there aint no beating lightsabers and reflecting blaster bolts and all that jazz.

I think there is a problem with the idea of not doing a story/trilogy that is based around the Jedi, or at least, based around the force. In the two stand alone we are getting stories that have no Jedi as the focus, for obvious reasons. While Rogue One had a lightsaber scene at the end, but otherwise no lightsabers or Jedi. What made it work, at least for me, was that we had the Guardians of the Whills. What worries me about Han Solo is that we will have no Jedi, no force.

If I'm RJ, I'd look to do something set in the early days of the Jedi, like the formation of the order and the split with the Sith, something which was already mentioned. Another awesome possibility, also already mentioned, is looking at the other dark siders in the aftermath of the Empire's end, the Knights of Ren, the Acolytes of the Beyond. Maybe even look at the Church of the Force.

So much is possible. I just think it needs to have lightsabers/the Force. Obviously awesome music. And, of course a screen crawl and a great story.

The Star Wars franchise would be nothing without it's beloved Jedi. The only way I see them doing away with the whole Jedi thing is them introducing a new order of force sensitives.

There were hundreds of Jedi in Episode 2.
    Was that a good film?

I am not interested in seeing a whole star wars trilogy without Jedi or the force. A one-off will work but a whole trilogy I simply do not see how we can consider it a star wars movie.

I get the feeling Rian doesn't really like using Jedi. He may want to explore other aspects of the universe, to make the trilogy his own.

I could actually see him showcasing the Jedi Order at a different and more pure time, outside of its corrupt phase near the Clone Wars and the Empire.

My thoughts is he is going to go back to a time when the Jedi were less hardline. When Jedi and Sith (not actually called Sith back then) were one in balance. The time when the Jedi Prime artwork in the first temple would be the idea. Jedi's using light and dark in balance. Then a split occurs where some feel being pure light side power users and some feel pure dark side power users cause a split and the Jedi go pure light and the Sith come from the group that believes dark side is the way to go.

So this is way way back in time. Before the Sith and Jedi wars and before the Sith rule of 2.

This is what I see star wars as well in a trilogy. But the space battles need to have that dogfight feel that you get from the OT. Epic land battles, see Scariff or Hoth for prime examples of the quality required. I don't need Jedi or Sith, those stories played out in the OT and the prequels.

In a one off movie or a TV series I am more open to what Star wars is. Blasters, ships flying around like the Falcon are probably the only requisites. For me the feel that everyone is a bit of a loner who builds their own character, outfit and weapons is a must as well.

It will be a tough order. I don't think Rian Johnson has the imagination of George Lucas, and it will be apparent in this new trilogy. His trilogy will be small, the Galaxy will feel empty; I am just making assumptions compared to what he did with TLJ. Star Wars belongs to Rian Johnson now, he owns it for some reason so as a fan, all i can do is just hope it's something worth watching.

i don't know if he'll include Jedi, but i wouldn't be surprised if he created characters that eventually discovered they were using the Force, only without Jedi being part of itl. there are so many species in the GFFA that have a latent connection to the Force i honestly wouldn't be surprised if he took that shortcut. the aim will be to capture that Star Wars mystical vibe but without the Jedi trappings.

it's weird, but the PT and TLJ really try to paint the Jedi as being a pretty rotten bunch. definitely not the vibe i got as a kid watching the OT over and over again, but whatevz.

I thought about this new trilogy for a bit now and had some ideas along the way:

maybe make it ultimately about the Prime Jedi (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Prime_Jedi)

    - but, before this, maybe focus on a far pre-Jedi/Sith civilization with a few extra-Force-sensitive individuals who discover their powers and begin to experience the Force.

These individuals perhaps experience something akin to our own historic Salem Witch Trials (https://www.britannica.com/event/Salem-witch-trials) and are exiled.

They go on to seek out others like them and found an academy in the spirit of X-Men's Xavier's School (http://marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Xavier's_School_for_Gifted_Youngsters) wherein there are differing views of the Force explored / taught, much like the Dark Arts/Defense Against the Dark Arts schools in Hogwarts (Harry Potter)
    http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Dark_Arts
    http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Defence_Against_the_Dark_Arts

The obvious dichotomy here hinting strongly at the Jedi/Sith divide later in galactic history.

To make it even more interesting, introduce the Whills and/or a fallen Whill who, in true *Promethean fashion, offer some "forbidden" secrets regarding the Force.

(*as in the Greek Titan Prometheus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prometheus )

The hidden agenda of the Whills/fallen Whill involved is that they are a fading species who feed off the Force but may go extinct due to a lack of conflict in the galaxy.

This could, I believe, fit in perfectly with Lucas' Sequel Trilogy concept:
    https://www.google.com/search?q=lucas+whills&source=lnms&tbm=nws&sa=X

To make it even more relevant, have perhaps the central character be a pre-Snoke version of Snoke (whoever that is), someone with a grand but inevitably twisted view of the Force.

Near the end of the trilogy, have this pre-Snoke entity banished to the Unknown Regions, and then have, of all people, an early Yoda discover, free him, and take him as a padawan.

Some expansion on these concepts (along with a proposal of a Darth Primus) are in an earlier post of mine in this forum:
    https://thecantina.starwarsnewsnet....on-trilogy-wish-list.54040/page-3#post-474175

Basically, I believe there is a very special opportunity here, in this seemingly completely unrelated trilogy, to do something incredibly new while, at the same time, tying everything together with the saga films and enriching both old and new sagas simultaneously by giving them such strong historic links.

If the storytellers do decide to divorce the storyline entirely from known Star Wars galactic history, they will have quite a challenge on their hands - trying to be Star Wars without alluding to or including (nearly or completely) anything popularly deemed what Star Wars is about.

But perhaps they can do it =)

I will wait and look forward to whatever they come up with and decide then if it works for me.

A part of me would like RJ’s trilogy to focus solely on Broom Boy from Canto Byte. Those three kids seemed pretty likable, and the fact that RJ ended TLJ with a scene of Broom Boy tells me his story is not over. (I highly doubt this character will appear in Episode IX.)
Perhaps it’s because I’m a TPM fan, but I see huge parallel between Broom Boy and Anakin Skywalker in TPM.
    1) both about the age of 9,
    2)both were slaves
    3) both are forced to work alongside gambling and racing.
    4) both of them look up at the stars at some point in the film.

Once we know the when, then guessing will be easier. If his trilogy takes place before the OT, ST and PT, then we'll get Jedi. If it takes place after the ST, then who knows. I think we'll still have the force and lightsabers, it just wouldn't feel like SW without it.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Jedi before they lost their way. Show me the Jedi at their best, before the hubris. Show me how they dealt with the messiness of humanity. I think it would be interesting to explore what the Jedi are really supposed to be, at the very best. What's the pinnacle, the end goal? What does that look like?

Show me the Utopia that the Jedi and Republic created before the prequels, and show me how they handled adversity. It would be interesting to have a uplifting, optimistic SW, that the battle isn't only with the dark forces that lurk beneath the surface, but with themselves. We always hear how great the Jedi were at their height, and how great the galaxy was, I'd like to see it, or their interpretation of it.

Earlier you mentioned new force factions? I'd like to see something about the Guardians of the Whills. Maybe go back to a couple hundred years before the PT. Could even be further back.

But I think the essence of a Star Wars film is:
    1. The Force
    2. Space battles
    3. Lightsaber duels

So if it has this, and is well written I'd probably be okay with it.
