I don't agree since the audience would get suspicious at this exchange in A New Hope:
Luke: How did my father die?
Obi-Wan: A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine before he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father.
You would have to introduce another pupil of Obi-Wan and make it look like he killed Anakin as not to provoke attention to this lie.

That's a good point, and I think that could have been easily worked in the PT. He didn't necessarily had to be a 'pupil' of Kenobi, but just a young Jedi who worked with Kenobi in one of the PT movies. Remember that Syfo Dias and Count Dooku are introduced in AOTC and those characters are never mentioned before so the audience just went with it.

If you are watching them 1-6 and don't know that Luke is Anakin's kid, then you won't really question the Kenobi/Luke conversation as much in ANH. You will just think that Luke was the kid of one of the Jedi in the PT, but not THE Jedi that is the hope of the galaxy. Remember if you are watching 1-6, then you don't even think that Anakin will be apart of the movies, as you think he is dead in ROTS, so there is no trace of who Darth Vader is. The same thing we did when Syfo Dias was mentioned as ordering the Clone Army, as nobody knew what Jedi he was in TPM.

To experience the full power of the SAGA,

one must watch them in the Order that they were created.

Star Wars gave us hints, tidbits & teases of what was possible....

But it was Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back that brought the house down on everyone's head.

The most epic moment; full of fear and wonder, in all the SAGA happens when our favorite DLOS decides that laser swords are for younglings..... so he pummels farmboy Luke with the force instead. A Master of Evil, indeed. In that moment, within their proper order, the training wheels of the SAGA fall get blown off... when the audience realizes that Luke doesn't stand a chance. Even worse, his mentors sent him to kill his own father.... everything he knows has been turned upside down once again. But Luke is our hero.... he would rather die than join the wicked man who sired him.

At the end of the day, Luke would rather sacrifice himself than become an agent of the Empire.

    EPIC.

There's not being in a previous film and then there's not figuring something basic out like this. Especially since this would require no one saying "Skywalker" in the PT (as we know from Return of the Jedi that Anakin's last name was also Skywalker, so there's no getting around this).

But you still interrupt the flow. Putting it in a second time doesn't automatically make it better.

I don't believe there is an "ideal" order of how the films can be watched. I think it would be depend upon the individual person and how she or he would like to view the movies.

I watch the films in the order George intended:

I, II, III, IV, V, VI, (with VII at the tail-end, even though I would watch TFA by itself only because it's the newest one.)

This December, I plan on watching the Holiday Special around Christmas time. It's a family tradition of mine. (Yeah, I know,,..)

Just as a personal observation from showing Star Wars to new comers for the first time. I have always suggested that first time watchers go OT and then PT but twice I've had individuals who wanted to watch them in I-VI order so I obliged. What I found is that when someone watches in I-VI order it makes A New Hope boring for them. Now before you call for my head for blasphemy or heresy realize that I'm not saying it's my opinion, put yourself in a new viewer's shoes.

You're watching episodes I-III and you're introduced to Anakin who goes from child to monster by the end of Episode III and then you get to Episode IV and it's like a giant side tracking story about his son and his journey until you get to V when the story turns it's attention back to Anakin. Watching in release order makes Episode IV matter to the viewer a lot more as you're seeing things from a perspective of Luke being your protagonist and not Anakin.

Machete order seems pretty trendy these days. If it’s good enough for Patton Oswalt . . .

There is nothing ideal, it depends on your sensibilities and which part of the Saga you grew up with.

Prior to Rogue One, I would have said in the order they were released, but now I'm thinking: Rogue One, Episodes IV, V, VI, Episodes I, II, III, Episodes VII, VIII, IX.

While I haven't had the chance to try it with anyone not familiar with Star Wars, I believe the OT should come before the PT. It's still too soon to see how the ST will shape the SW universe, but I currently think it would work best showing it after you've gone through the PT, though I'm not 100% convinced it shouldn't be shown after the OT.

But, what my question is, with Rogue One (Ep 3.9?) now out, leading directly into ANH, (assuming I'm showing it OT, PT, ST,) should Rogue One be shown before the OT (3.9, 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 7,) or after the PT (4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 3.9, 7)?

I kind of want to say showing RO before the OT would make the most sense. (3.9, 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3, 7m) Rogue One doesn't give away any of the Skywalker saga (aside from Easter Eggs that fans would catch,) and would introduce a new viewer to the universe, but not the flashy choreography of the PT. It also goes DIRECTLY into ANH, so it would be cool to see that transition with some of the key players, not knowing their ultimate fate. They would also not know the "obvious-to-us" outcome of RO, because they wouldn't know the Death Star's ultimate fate.

Seeing as not many characters from the PT are in RO, I don't see the benefit of showing RO after the PT would have much impact, but I'm open to suggestions that support a reason otherwise.

If you want Anakin's perspective then:

Phantom Menace > Attack of the Clones > Revenge of the Sith > A New Hope > Empire Strikes Back > Return of the Jedi > The Force Awakens > Rogue One

    Luke's perspective:

Revenge of the Sith > A New Hope > Empire Strikes Back > Return of the Jedi > The Force Awakens > Rogue One > The Phantom Menace > Attack of the Clones.

    I know, weird order.

I'm personally not a fan of the sequels, so I don't really watch them but if one had too I would watch it in a specific order I would do the "new" machete order which is:

    Rogue One
    A New Hope
    Empire Strikes Back
    Attack of Clones
    Revenge of the Sith
    Return of the Jedi
    Force Awakens

That's how I would do it when I show someone who has never seen any of them.

Just have them watch in order as they came out and narrate what each movie represents in context. Don't give anything away.

Honestly thats why I enjoy watching the movies in the order they came out. Im an Empire strikes back, guy myself. But for that purpose of the CGI and filming, I like 4,5,and 6 first then the prequels. I mean it could be that I was born in 91' so I watched the later episodes first so i just have a bias but hey lol.
