What @DarthPilkington is referring to, I believe, is the "Ratings Received" menu you can click on when hovering over your username on the top right corner of the page... That does, indeed, give a post-by-post look at how things have been rated.

This forum setup has lots of nooks and crannies, that's for sure.

 

As an idea could there be a way to add images to our status.

Is there a need for negative ratings here at The Cantina? They are adversarial by nature and it might seem contradictory to the site's reputation for a culture that's more civil than others.

Truly negative or trolling posts tend to be inherently obvious and in my experience negative rating is most often utilised by newer users who will look to contribute through whatever options are available. They might be unfamiliar with the culture of their rare use, their personal notification, and any resulting stigma or reaction.

I know they're just ratings on an internet forum and negative ratings from the callow, clueless or trolling can be worn with pride as badges of merit. It would be sad to think sensitive posters could feel admonished or have a negative association with members or the site as a result of rating options they'd received if it was unnecessary or could be easily avoided.

Note: I haven't given much thought to the pros/cons outside of this ↑. Negative ratings could well have important and necessary aspects I've overlooked.

 

i know this is possible in some forums. but could we implement (or switch on) an option to turn off our rating systems? so that we can neither give nor receive them?

i know this crops up again and again, and i too am weary of seeing conversations shut down because people just click through with negative ratings. there are so many members who don't post because they're afraid of being judged (even "neutral" can carry negative connotations).

for the people who want to rate and be rated, let them click all the yodas and darth vaders they want, but for the people who just want to have conversations without the burden of even an arbitrarily silly scoring system, doesn't it seem more fair to give them that option?

i know you say it's a "moderation-by-democracy" and yet people with 60 posts and 200+ negatives can still inflict the board with so much negative energy. i'm at a loss to understand why that's okay.

 

Get rid of the ratings system. If a comment is worth reading, people will read it and make their own further comment. Some people are afraid to truly express their opinions and feelings on a topic or opinion because they feel their own views or opinions will be unpopular and "earn" negative ratings. The ratings are currently pointless to someone who has no interest in using the points they earn in the gaming or gambling sections of SWNN.

 

personally, i really enjoy the rating system! it gives a good idea as to what the community thinks about certain subjects.

i think it could be cool if negative ratings had a more positive presence. that may sound contradictory, but i'm thinking about a KotOR type system where dark side points earned you powerful techniques and all that. if earning negative ratings tied into that somehow that could be fun.

 

I like the ratings...mostly because I'm lazy.
