    FACT:
Sound must have a medium to travel through to be heard. In the vacuum of space, sound cannot travel as there are no molecules for the sound waves to travel through. Therefore, the intense sounds of Star Wars space battles , although they are exciting, are unrealistic. In reality, these battles would be fought in silence.

    SPECULATION:
However, that makes for a boring film, reality be darned. Therefore, George Lucas gave us the iconic dog fights in space that we love today in the fantasy world that is the Galaxy Far Far Away. I always accepted the notion that even if it was just for entertainment value, maybe the physics of the GFFA are different from our own. Maybe space in that galaxy is not a true vacuum which allows for sound to travel. Maybe ships have sensors that can somehow pick up or imitate sounds to enhance the perception of those in the ship as this article suggests:

    http://www.tested.com/science/space/459215-what-if-sound-star-wars-was-type-interface-design/

I am currently reading Lords of the Sith by Paul Kemp. In the first chapter of the book, there is a scene where Vader ejects from his TIE in space and uses it to burst a hole in another ship through which he plans to board said vessel. The writer explains that when the TIE contacts the ship and explodes that there is no sound...interesting... I guess my theory on the GFFA having different physics is incorrect. So either the ships in SW possess a technology that allows the pilots and passengers to pick up sounds that cannot be heard outside of the ship or the sounds of the films are purely to enhance the entertainment of the viewer (probably the latter). Anyways, what do you think?

Simply for the viewer. While being realistic, it would be boring for a film intended to have intense, most likely unrealistic combat and the like such as Star Wars. It could certainly work for other sci-fi franchises, but the bar has been set already for this one.

Not to say being realistic in this sense is bad. I can think of films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Interstellar which had no sound in space, and to good effect. It helps to separate the two regions and really bring the difference home to the viewer.

But eh, for an adventure like Star Wars, not soundly based in science fact nor science theory but rather science fantasy, it's permissible solely as a treat for the audience.

first of all, i love tested.com it's one of my favorite sites. :D i thought his theory was very interesting. it makes perfect since to add sound as part of the interface for a better since of direction. even more interesting not mentioned in the article, a persons since of balance and orientation in the world is all calibrated for your brain to interpret in your ear. example. if i was to take an eye dropper and squeeze cold water into your ear, you would lose all since of direction, and might even pass out. so protecting yourself from sudden bursts of energy in space via your own 3D sound system makes perfect since. with the help of the computers one's reflexes could tell you to point and shoot the oncoming enemy.

I own a sweet pair of gaming head phones i used to use when i played call of Duty... it creates a 3D sound environment that i can use to locate my enemy, and amplifies high frequency noises such as someone nearby walking through the grass or stepping on a stone surface. it has the ability to tell me a shot came from the behind me and a bit to the left. its naturally intuitive. if that's the kind of technology that exists, then creating "fake" sound for a real dog fight isn't impossible. but with such a system it could be easily tricked too.

fascinating topic. thanks for bringing it up.

The truth however is that Star Wars is fantasy... the sound is there for our own entertainment. but it is fun to speculate how these things would actually work. :D

I personally am hobbled by the fact that I love to pick apart movie scenes....and my wife always turns to me with a smile and says: "Honey.....It's a movie, don't overthink it."

i get it man. im always trying to find a way to how things like this could really be possible. a lot of what Star Trek invented came to be, years latter... so sometimes it seems farfetched but nothing is impossible.

I think the last movie I wondered about was a few weeks ago. Air Force One.... when they zip line across to the other plane.

That is one of my favorite films..."Get off my plane." :) I literally wanted to write Ford in for president after seeing that movie. That part was really cool with the cable as the plane was going down.

I think it may be possible if the air from the puncture gets sucked into space. That would provide a medium for sound and people could hear the explosion! So yes!
