But JJ doesn't hint. Subtlety isn't his strong suit.

JJ smashes you in the face with a mystery until it subdues you.
Even if it's not really a mystery or important.

Oh I never noticed that in TFA or other films he has written that I have seen. The fist series of Lost was superb. Never saw the rest. Very few stories of that type can be resolved without major disappointment.

in TFA he just brow beats you with mystery that isn't a mystery on repeat.
It's fine to a point but I'm so happy Rian Johnson quelled most of them

i've been thinking about JJ's mystery box quite a lot lately, and that events in TLJ put a lid on them.

you can only truly surprise someone if they aren't expecting a surprise, and if you think of practically any horror film - this is what happens:-
victim hears something and suspects psycho killer is gonna jump out of the closet
music builds as victim approaches closet
victim opens closet.. music peaks.... there's nobody there.
    music stops completely
victim and audience calm down.. we thought something was gonna happen, but it didn't. phew
victim turns around... slash!... blood gushing all over the shop, and i'm attached to the ceiling via my finger nails. glad i wore brown trousers :D

where on earth am i going with this i hear you beg? lol

JJ set up the mysteries in TFA
we spent 2 years talking about what may happen.. the music was building
we watched TLJ expecting the surprises.. music peaked
the mysteries amounted to nothing.. music stopped

he's a clever guy, and he is obsessed with his mysteries and surprising his audience.

there are some twists to come ;)

After several viewings I don't think 8 is a bad move, I like it much more now than I did upon on a first viewing. However, The Last Jedi kind of ripped out all the excitement and anticipation I had for the series. I couldn't wait to see Rogue One after Force Awakens, and then excitedly waiting for Last Jedi. After 8, I'm just kind of like whatever. I'm still going to see Solo on opening day because its Star Wars. Same with 9, but the excitement, anticipation of them is kind of gone. That's been the most disappointing thing for me in the aftermath of Episode 8.

Nothing at this point can make me excited for episode 9. I just don't care how the story ends at this point. Now if they announce some interesting spinoffs like a obi wan movie I may head back to the cinemas.

I really really really did not enjoy TLJ, but I will still be in the theaters for EPIX. I have no idea however what anyone has to look forward to. EPIX I suspect is going to have the feel of a stand alone movie and not really be connected very closely with TLJ (nor would I make an effort to do so if I was writing/directing it).

Maybe we'll have a Dark Knight Rises situation where it's more a sequel to the first film than the second...

Or JJ will try to undue everything fans didn’t like from TLJ and try to jive with TFA (Snoke is not dead, Rey is a Solo/Skywalker, etc). That may actually be worse because it will make this Trilogy’s narrative all over the place and inconsistent.

Agreed, I think it's probably a bridge too far to try to undo what's been done directly. If you were in charge of EPIX and you didn't like where TLJ left off or what it gave you to work with, you probably just give it the Midichlorian treatment and basically never mention/reference anything from it.

So glad I don't have to be miserable about this series because my stupid fan theories weren't fulfilled or I'm unwilling to let anything in this saga ever change.

Not sure what you mean? Just to give you some context, back in 1983 I thought Vader was lying to Luke in ESB and I never thought Leia would be ‘the other.’

My point is my fan theories were wrong leading into ROTJ but I still loved the movie. ;)

I was referring to fans who hated TLJ because their fan theories and assumptions weren't fulfilled.

TFA is a fine film to me.
TLJ is my least favorite SW movie yet.

If JJ writes and directs more so in line with TFA and seems to ignore TLJ and its style I will consider watching IX. But..right now I'm not looking forward to IX. At all.

    OR

If on April 1st Disney announces TLJ was just a big April Fools joke I will be the happiest person ever - and will gladly see the real VIII and look forward to IX.

Bizzarely, the fact that TLJ was a dissapointment for me is the main reason that makes me want to see IX. I don't care for another Rey Vs Kylo scenario, it's been done too many times already. But I am interested to see if JJ can save the trilogy by putting TLJ into context. I guess deep inside I am still hoping that TLJ was a clever setup for what will happen in IX and Rian is deliberately taking the blame to hide the secrets uncovered in IX. LIke Hux is portrayed as an idiot in VIII because he will have an important role in IX and Rian wanted to underestimate him going into the next episode.

Love your analysis of the typical jumpscare horror movie but I would argue that there are quite a few horror movies that don't go according to the book. It's these movies that stand out by doing things differently but at the same time staying true to the horror genre. I loved the fact that there were a lot of twists in TLJ but I disliked many of the twists that went along the line of "oh you thought the answer was X? well plottwist, the answer is: there is no answer!" Especially with repeated viewings, the twists can no longer surprise you the lack of explaination they were built on gets more and more annoying.

I'll wait for the reviews. Would like to watch, more for completion, but not invested in the story of the ST. If the reviews are great, spoilers or not, it will get me into the cinema.
