Ok so what do we think is causing the imbalance in The Force? Recall in the opening scenes of TFA Lor San Tekka indicates that without the Jedi there could be no balance in The Force? Why?

It doesn't seem like the numbers of Jedi or Sith affect that balance. For thousands of years, there have been only 2 Sith at a time and many Jedi, then later (Episodes 4, 5, and 6) there are very few Jedi and still a small number of Sith, and no mention of imbalance then (as best I can recall)

Even if there were no Sith and no Jedi, there are numerous beings through out the galaxy who are Force Sensitive. Some become eventual Force Users (Nightsisters, Inquisitors, members from the Eternal Empire, Knights of Ren, folks like Maz), without ever associating with the Sith or the Jedi.

So why is the Force out of balance? Why are Jedi needed to create balance? Is there a tendency to become a Dark Side User if one uses the force without teaching/guidance? And did this imbalance cause the Awakening? What do you all think?

I think that it's just the matter of HOW the force is used in FS beings through The Galaxy .

You think that's what causes the need for balance? Or are you talking about something else?

here's my take and it's going to be very simplistic because i'm just inferring from the OT and TFA...

the rise of the First Order has knocked things out of balance (just like the rise of the Empire did). any time the Force is used to amass power, that's what teeters the totter. Snoke and Ren (and whatever FS peeps are in that camp) are shifting the balance by actively using the Force for their galaxy-dominating gain.

other FS peeps in the galaxy aren't doing squiddly sufficient to counter that outside of whoever's got it in the Resistance (Leia, for example). they need big guns like Luke and Rey to get in the saddle to put it back on track.

    so it's not really a 2 Sith x 5 Jedis + 18 FSs = balance type formula or whatever.

it's about basic equilibrium in the power dynamic.

Well I meant that it IS the balance...but if the force has a good and bad balance then not everyone can be bad without there being a balance .

But in that equation wouldn't we have to consider more than just Jedi and Sith/KoR. Right now Sith/KoR make a small number of Force Users through out the galaxy, and obviously all that's left on the Jedi side is Luke. Is the take away here that the Jedi balance all other non-Jedi force users?

I think you're kindnesses dancing...I'm trying to say that he Jedi and the Sith are included with ALL of the RS being s I the Galaxy. The ones who are not actual Jedi and actual Sith can still practice the good side and the bad side. From what WE see as an audience, it seems to be hat the Jedi and the Sith are the only ones to balance the force but they just make up he TRAINED FS'S that are just more in-tune with the force .

The Inquisitors and Night Sisters seemed to have their own regimented training (though the Inquisitors did basically work for the Sith... well Vader and Sidious) the Nightsisters were a whole other thing weren't they? And I know this occurs much further in the past in the SW universe but, Valkorion seemed to be a fairly powerful practitioner (from the Eternal Empire).

According to JJ Abrams, the KoR are not Sith. If there is any balancing to take place at this point (from the movie perspective) it will be between Jedi and Ren, that's what led me to believe this wasn't about any particular Dark Side group.

Yeah I'm going with the rise of the FO being what's throwing things "out of balance" as well. Luke's new Jedi Order could have probably countered this, but Kylo killed them all and Luke himself went into exile to parts unknown. So, as Maz put it, you have the FO's "shadow spreading across the Galaxy" now, with no Jedi to counter them.

As for the "Awakening," well part of it at least seems to refer to Rey "awakening" her powers. But I have this suspicion that there's more to it than just one FS girl'd powers starting to develop. Snoke's comment about "if Skywalker returns, then the new Jedi will rise" only makes me think this even more.

See, the FO relies on the dark side of the force OPENLY in relation to The Emoire that fell .

The goal of that line is to establish for the audience that Anakin's redemption and death in Return of the Jedi didn't bring balance in the force. This means that Anakin was not the Chosen One after all. This is a set-up for the character of Rey, who, as will be revealed, is the real chosen one and will bring balance in the force in one way or the other. It is meant to extend the storyline of the Skywalkers in the sequels and give and it meaning and also to alter the closure of both Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi.

Or that he did for a time, but a new threat emerge to throw it out of balance again.

Sith are known for planet-destroying weapons, which tend to wreak havoc with the
Palpatine kept his secret hidden until he was in full control of the Senate.....once he started decimating the Jedi with a standing army loyal only to him, there really was no point in keeping his or Vader's powers a secret.

Well from what ice heard, Vader's powers were more the stuff as legend since no one knows that he's really Anakin Skywalker but it's not like Palpatine would ever just force choke of someone in the public/imperial a senate just because the mood strikes him ...

Tarkin knew who Vader was....that said, not knowing Vader was Anakin isn't the same as not knowing Vader's a Sith, and I doubt anyone's going to bring it up to Vader's face anyways.

That said, there's nothing preventing Vader or Palpatine from Force choking anyone who pisses them off anyways, as ANH and ESB both demonstrated.

I'm not sure Vader would make a real distinction. Then again, he is more forgiving than the Emperor. ;)

It's debatable how well-known the Sith were. Heck barely 20 years after TCW, when there were 10,000 Jedi running around, they're treated as legends and there's great doubt about The Force and it's power. Even among high ranking Imperials. And there were only TWO Sith to begin with.

So I can buy the Sith only being known to a select few.
