Yep - but could the junker desert not be somewhere else? If her parents were career scavengers then they could've gone anywhere and done that...though I know it's more likely to be on Jakku.




Just had another thought though. In the original TFA leaks, the KoR flashback was about when the they battled a clan and this is where Kylo gets the saber (later to be stolen back by Maz). Someone once speculated that Rey's parents were part of this clan. Emphasis on speculated. It could be that JJ makes this a reality - that Rey's parents abandoned her to join this clan and that they found Luke's saber (scavenging on Cloud City - where the saber was found). So it might end up being that Kylo killed her parents or that there is some link there to him? I originally dismissed Rey's parents being part of this clan because I didn't think they'd have abandoned her in such a callous way. But now we know differently. I think JJ will be the one to use the KoR in IX and explore their backstory and so we might then discover more about Rey's folks...

The subtitles, I have posted them in the forum, can not confirm they are 100% correct but I have the movie in my hard drive as well and they seem to match so far.

You are assuming a slave economy where she's sold and recognized as property. Instead of the colloquial "sold." Unkar got a small girl who could reach salvage others couldn't she got the same deal everyone else got. Food for tech.

 

I saw it for a second time today, and I'm more confident than ever I'll continue to give Disney money.

If she is sold to someone for drink money, then the owner would protect his investment.....Tatooine had a similar 'slave economy' and Watto installed explosive chips in Shmi and Anakin to ensure they didn't escape....Anakin was a child too and yet Watto did this.....Also, Rey worked for various people before she worked for Unkar according to the books.....so again, Rey working for various people over the years in exchange for food completely goes against the possibility that she had one master who bought her from her parents. So again, TLJ goes against other canon.

 

Rey's parents are scavengers. But they're also heavy drinkers and gamblers. And addicted to death sticks. Understandable considering the life they lead. They work for the Hutts and arrive on Jakku. They go about their business but become indebted to Unkar Plutt, who takes advantage of their habits. One day, Niima the Hutt is killed and Rey's parents are left penniless. But they need money to get off the planet on the Hutt transport to go scavenge somewhere else (so they can earn more drinking money - on Jakku it is about survival/getting rations). But because of their habits, they owe Unkar and so go to him with an offer...

Unkar Plutt (UP): You owe me 1000 credits!
Rey Dad (RD): We don't have it!
UP: Then you'd better find it!
RD: Our daughter - you've seen her! She's young but a great scavenger. We can leave her here with you!
UP: You'd abandon your own daughter?!
RD: She probably stand a better chance if we did.
UP: Hmmm, it's a deal.

Rey's parents leave their daughter on a Hutt transport. After that, x amount of things could've happened, e.g, they returned one day to get Rey back (not for her sake but to use her again) and get killed OR they never got away from Jakku. The ship was shot down or stopped somewhere else on the planet.

And I know @Aglarion provided the subtitle script but I'm still not 100% that Kylo said they were buried on Jakku. I thought he just said a desert. Getting in a 4th viewing today so will listen out!

 

My post is primarily about the fact that the canon material we have until now contradicts TLJ...hence, if Rey already knew her parents sold her:

- She would not be working from a young age with different scavengers, not a single master.
- She would not herself write in her diary that she was left on Jakku by mistake
- She would not herself be proud of being free and not a slave (TFA novel)
- The TFA concept art shows a family ship, the one she saw in her vision
- Her 'master' would not let her roam off to the border of Kelvin range close to the desert as a little girl (where she finally found hope in the form of desert blooms in the fallen AT-AT) as she could easily lose her way and die ....and the person would lose their investment.

Now for your points:

1. Just because they are drunks doesn't automatically make them death stick addicts and gamblers... unless I am wrong, nothing of this sort is mentioned. Also, the scavengers of NIMA outpost barely make ends meet and consider fruit a luxury item (Poe's Log where Koyo fruit are a rare luxury), so they can hardly afford an item like death sticks, which are sold in places like the Outlander Club on Coruscant....now Canto Bight would be a place where maybe the death stick business would thrive.

2. Nima the Hutt ran a cult with zombie followers created by injecting some substance into their skull (Aftermath novels))....they could not even form lucid sentences....so Nima's death at the hand's of some bounty hunter would have no impact on Rey's parents unless they were part of her zombie brigade, and if they were then its unlikely they would have a daughter and even have the mental faculty to trade her for booze.

3. Unkar didn't interact with Rey until she was older....until then she was brought up and worked for other scavengers...some who were even kind to her...so its unlikely Unkar bought her....to understand how Unkar behaves around things/people he owns, there is the short story- True Love, where Unkar uses and abuses everyone around him, is a sadist and money matters to him over everything and even resorts to murder for it...so this bolsters the argument that he would not have allowed Rey so much freedom and allowed her to work for others so they could profit if she actually was his property....even the less evil Watto implanted exploding chips in Shmi and Anakin to prevent them from running away.

4. Kylo does mention the Jakku desert as the location of their pauper's grave (I've seen it thrice and definitely heard it)

This leads me to conclude that they changed Rey's backstory in TLJ going against all existing canon until now....and this broken continuity bugs me a lot.

 

It really bothers me how some dehumanize evil actions some characters in this myth commit... I love Star Wars but sheeehhh... We really need the TLJ novelization...
