Wow, some people can't handle dry, petty jokes.... All I do is jokingly say a person should say please (magic word), and I get swathed with negative ratings. Does a ;) not mean anything anymore?

Edit: some people seem to be viewing this as an attack, this is not an attack :). I am exaggerating on purpose, but there is no malice behind these words.

Yeah I don't understand why @Alex Sebire is getting the Dislikes and Off-Topics. I alerted the mods of this behavior.

Personally I didn't get Alex's first "joke"... it just seemed antagonizing to me. And if you have to explain a joke, well you know what they say.

As for all the "off topics" and such, I think we just need to keep this thread more Comic-related, less nitpicking other users' posts, even if it is an attempt at humor.
"Stay on target.... stay on target..."

Just my humble opinion. Rock on everyone! :)

Going to try to answer these in a bulk, as well as offer a look back on things that changed during the course of the Act, clarify some things that can now be clarified, as well as offer some interesting "what-if" scenarios that never quite made it due to either time constraints, contradicted by suggestions or generally improved upon.
If it pays well, sure. Regrettably, it almost always never does.
Act II is coming roughly at the start of November. This may sound like blasphemy, but I feel like I've earned some rest. I don't want us to charge boldly into Act II only to have me suffer fatigue right in the middle of it. I've come to realize as the adventure started picking up that we were not going to be done in the foreseeable future. This journey of ours is a marathon, as much as for the characters themselves, as it is for us. The "Promise" speech written at the end of Act I was meant to reference this indirectly - written as a token of appreciation for your interest, fervor and contribution to the larger whole that is this story.

As for what awaits us in the second installment of this five-part (mis)adventure: I honestly cannot say - in terms of actual story. I can, however, dish out some information about what's planned for the plot and how it all begins. As always, it is up to each of you to do with it as you will. I will cover this in full detail a little bit further down this post.
Once Lankist frees up his schedule at work, perhaps. I am under the impression that it's less hectic for him nowadays, but certainly not enough. Regardless, he is ever watchful of the thread and he digs where we're going thus far. I can do a brief recap of important events and a general summary of the original adventure here - but otherwise, I suggest we focus on the new plot for now.
I think stuff like that needs to stay in the Off-Topic forum at best. This thread is not a chat lounge - and if we're being honest, this was not the first time this has happened. I love discussion, and thoroughly encourage it, but at least stay on topic because I know there are people who came here to read the comic, as well as the suggestions accompanying it instead of jabs (even friendly ones) between the participants.

Before we begin proper, here is the updated galaxy map for Act II and beyond.

As the general story and political climate started to crystallize, I felt the need to add a couple of planets to the whole - including the enigmatic planet of Sullarn. What's Sullarn, you ask? Briefly put, it is a Republic fringe world at the borders of Chiss Space. I realized that I needed a world where the two cultures would clash, given the increased significance that the Ascendancy have come to play in the storyline. In terms of real world parallels - imagine if the Chiss Ascendancy was China - Sullarn would be the equivalent of the Silk Road.

Of course, this was all before the Reaping of Sullarn, which is one of the major background events that happened in the adventure. Nowadays, Sullarn is an abandoned world by both the Republic and the Chiss - especially considering the fact that the Chiss temporarily joined the Empire as allies in their war against the Republic.

And now for the main course!

    BEHIND THE PIXELS:
    • THE ENDING
    • First off, I'm glad beyond measure how the ending for Act I was received. As much as the update itself has made the day for some of you, your kind comments have in turn made the day for me. A fair trade, imagine that!
    • For the ending, I wanted to take a bold direction and deliberately avoid making it feel like "just another update". In a way, it was meant to represent our reward of getting there. You've built these characters over the course of an eight-month long Act - now see them take life in a culmination of all your decisions.
    • The ending of Chapter 12 was meant to be a celebration of our new heroes. The epilogue was a love letter to the old adventure.
    • It took me four days to finish the ending, even if I had previously completed the 200-frame Mynock shot of trudging through the blizzard somewhere in August. One day for drawing the detailed shots, one day for coloring them and adding lightning effects, one day for creating the rest of the panels and one day for drinking scotch like a sloth-riddled pile of disappointment.
    • Yes. The ending was forged in Fire and Scotch.
    • The Epilogue was going to be the same, no matter where your suggestions would have brought you. That's why I did some preliminary work for it in August, because the unique nature of the Mynock reveal allowed me to do so.
    • It is built specifically to function like a self-contained example of "Here Is Why It Works" - we've got the humor and the jokes at the start, the dramatic flair and the overarching themes in the middle, and the surprises that come from the freedom of people's suggestions at the end.

    • THE OLD CHARACTERS
    • The name of the final soundtrack for Act I, "Shadow of Mynock" is a reference to "Shadow of Revan", one of the expansions for Star Wars: The Old Republic. I had also personally found it fitting because Mynock's presence was felt throughout the ending even before his debut in the Epilogue. The new heroes were in his shadow - on a journey that he had already undergone.
    • It goes without saying that Steve and Mynock definitely are in some kind of partnership. So yeah - I'm pretty much confirming that The Fluke joined up with Mynock, Kestrel and Steve for the heist which left Grabba the Hutt's wealth in shambles.
    • The circumstances of what earned them the bounty in the first place still remains a mystery and will be fully revealed in Act II. However, I can reveal that both the Empire and the Republic were the original parties who set the bounties up, and *not* Grabba himself. The Corpulent One was just the money-holder - in the sense that his credits would pay for the bounty whilst the Republic and the Empire would return the investment with interest.
    • You can understand why Grabba would be furious at the three of them. In the end, he was just a bystander. I neglected to mention Steve in this arrangement as his purpose in the heist wasn't a direct one. It's also yet another spoiler.
    • I worked with the idea that the Centennial Turkey, much like the Millennium Falcon, switched owners so much that it just didn't matter to the story as much. However, one little detail I would like to add is that Master Tyren *never* had ownership of the Turkey, but he did have ownership of Jeeves.
    • I toyed with the idea of returning Jan, I really did. However, there was just no purpose for him in Act I, so I ultimately went against it. Even Jane's cameo simply served to pass the torch over to Jun Bland.
    • As much as I liked Trooper's racism and forgetfulness from the original, I felt that his story was done. Him suffering from Alzheimer's was a dark twist and I initially feared how the veterans would react to it.
    • I chose very early-on to focus on two key themes from the original that the newcomers could latch onto: the Kestrel and Mynock dynamic, and the Mynock and Steve rivalry.
    • One of the funniest things I've found in Act I was my deliberate inclusion of wanted posters for Mynock and Kestrel throughout the various locations and it took us eleven chapters to finally make the new characters motivated enough to go and look for the old protagonists.

    • THE NEW BLOODS
    • Probably mentioned already, but Missy was never supposed to be a protagonist. Her inclusion literally came overnight.
    • I am proud of how Missy developed as a character, but I regret not giving her enough material for us to work with in the first Act.
    • Jun Bland wasn't supposed to appear until Act II.
    • Before his inclusion, Missy's plot would have taken her undercover in Khoonda in place of Jun's introductory chapter.
    • This would have probably ended differently and given us a different climax of Act I.
    • Sprites were developed for the Dantooine Resistance, but since the Missy chapter never came to be, and Jun Bland eliminated them as a factor in Chapter 11, they ended up being recycled.
    • Initially, the Mandalorian Jedi wasn't even supposed to be a playable character. Before Doop's distinct personality got developed, I had him planned as a foil to Doop - but that just didn't work with the anti-hero that we've developed and I realized that we would need a proper Jedi Consular viewpoint. Thus, his role transitioned into what it is today.
    • I love how some of his quirks have already been developed by the might of the fandom. I particularly liked that bit about the drinks at the Pleasure Barge in Chapter 1. The holocron bit was a deliberate inclusion on my part, but I left it open-ended with the intent that if people didn't pick up on it, it wouldn't be used.
    • Saber was a surprise for me. I was worried he would end up becoming the unpopular one of the bunch, so I tried to beef up his role with Chapter 11. Then the goldmine of humor that is the Missy and Saber dynamic was established; we had the Steve crystal cave scene - and the rest was history Sabering Time.
    • The Steve apparition was a manifestation of Saber's doubts and guilt, very much akin to Luke's Vader apparition being a manifestation of his fears and conflict.
    • I wanted to include Matt the Radar Technician in the Finale where he would explain what happened on Nar Shaddaa and how he ended up with General Fux, but the update was already becoming too large.
    • The Fluke will have a bigger role in Act II compared to Act I as we close in on the Mynock, Kestrel and Steve plot.

    • GOING FORWARD
    • Act II will begin on a trio of planets with three separate storylines that will run parallel to each other.
    • We will have Doop, Missy and Columbo on Onderon at the start of the Act trying to deliver the yellow sand from that manifest they picked up in Grabba's Palace for some extra space bucks whilst following the trail of Kestrel.
    • The second storyline will be that of Saber following the Imperial campaign in the Core Worlds with Ratchet as he assembles his LOBSTRE SQUAD.
    • Yes. The Friend Ship is going to be featured.
    • The third storyline will focus on Jun Bland and (potentially) the Jedi Consular as well. It is planned to take place on Coruscant.
    • I don't know which planets we'll visit beyond that, but I've always wanted to do Korriban and/or Alderaan.
    • Expect a grand opening to the Act. I would define it as being something similar to The Finale Lite.
    • The overarching theme for Act I has been about characters who've fallen from grace finding a reason to get up and rise above.
    • The overarching theme for Act II is going to be legacy.
    • Specifically, I know for certain that it is going to deal with the final events of the old adventure as its central plot. How we get there and what lies beyond is naturally up to all of you.
    • The final subtitle for Act I, "The Fallen Knights", references both Saber and Doop, who were arguably the two characters with the most screen time in the Act. It also references Mynock and Steve in an indirect way.
    • Each of our protagonists begins the Act facing some form of an existential crisis. By the end of the Act, we see them overcome it to a degree.
    • Doop struggles to reconcile his past with the present; Saber struggles against his aimless apathy towards the Empire; Missy struggles with her realization that her dream job, wealth and connections are ultimately hollow and unfulfilling.
    • Jun Bland is the foil to this progression. He starts off as being absolutely certain of his goal to become a Republic Agent. At any cost. Once he actually realizes what the cost is, in form of Musco's sacrifice, he starts to have doubts that he wants to walk down a path that's most definitely not a clean one - yet similarly, Musco's death galvanizes Jun to keep going down the rabbit hole so that the sacrifice is ultimately not in vain.
    • It took me eight chapters to figure out what to do with Snote properly.
    • The fallout from Dantooine is going to be shown from Snote's perspective.
    • He will never be a playable character as it conceptually defeats the mystery surrounding the character.
    • Used to be a time where I would get two suggestions a day and call it success. Now I'm struggling to bind the suggestions together due to the sheer amount of them. This does not mean that I have anything personal against any of you, but it's become a more often occurrence where I just can't blend them in and make a coherent update that doesn't drag or chafe. I hope you understand my position here.
    • I feared the comic would meet its premature end during Chapter 2, as there was a period of time where we would not get a single suggestion for four days.
    • I am proud of how much we've grown since then. In eight months, we've managed to pass one hundred thousand views and I hope that we get to keep up the rise.
    • Act II is going to be designed to allow newcomers to jump straight into the story. If you have a friend or know a fellow Star Wars fan who might be interested in something like this... now is the time.
    • I'll be unveiling the character redesigns for Doop, Saber, Missy and Jun tomorrow. They are meant to be a product of how they've developed throughout Act I.
    • The subtitle for Act II is going to revealed the day after that. It will probably be accompanied by character entries for Old Man Mynock, Kestrel, Steve, as well as our own protagonists too (and other major players of the comic).
I would have posted this sooner, but I had "One More Turn" to play.

You sure have. Don't burn yourself out. I've seen projects like these fall by the wayside before for lesser reasons. I for one will be here when you pick up the pen again.

    Patience, padawans.

That's a lot more work than I imagined you usually do. It gives me a new level of respect for your work and dedication.

Here I thought it was just cut-paste-scotch.

You extrapolated this much from our suggestions?! Can you write my next job application, please?

What mystery? He's quite obviously Anakin/Palpatine/Mace Windu/Evil Leia/Every Other Bloody Character In The Star Wars Universe if the Internet is anything to go by.

Oh boy can you talk....you sure you're not a woman?

I read every single letter to this post *smugs* and gotta say this: shut up! No spoilers!!! Don't make it sound so premeditated :p are you trying to influence our future suggestions? That would be something a Darksider would do...
I gotta be honest....I never read the comic in its entirety..and sometimes I struggle to remember who is who...but this post....made me want to go back to page 1 and reread all...with actually paying attention to the story...so good job :D

    Heed this well, folks.

I know the giddy thrill of having your suggestion incorporated into an update. I've been there. It's like the sweet, sweet smoke of death sticks. And then you just want more, MORE, MORE! But don't let it addict you! That way leads to the Dark Side!

Post your suggestions. Let the Farce - and @Alamact - (but mostly @Alamact) - guide them. If yours doesn't make it, let go, Luke! (or whatever your name is). You'll be on target another time. There'll always be another update.

You certainly have! Take your time and reset. I am already feeling the anticipation for Act 2 so when it finally comes back it will be like watching a new Star Wars movie for the first time. :D
    Lord Alamact of House Targaryen!
That's interesting. What made you want to include him then?
Oh yeah, I can see it! So that wasn't exactly Steve but more like how Saber viewed Steve?
+1 for Alderaan. It would be nice to visit it before it becomes space dust.
That's actually cool how we got there.

Oh, it used to be far less work per update. Then the updates, the suggestions, and the characters started getting more complex. If you remember, the update gap was steadily increasing and fluctuating with the old adventure as time went on much for the same exact reason. Lankist warned me about it even before I started doing the adventure, yet only now do I truly realize what he meant by it.
It was more of a thing discovered in hindsight. Somewhere around the middle of Chapter 12, I looked back and saw where our characters began and where they ended up, and I thought to myself: "You know, this might actually work."

It also probably helped that the early updates didn't have lots of actual dialogue, so it offered more leeway for me to establish the theme at a time where the adventure was only just gaining (or regaining, as it were) its identity.
You'd actually be surprised at the sheer strength of the Butterfly Effect at work here. I tend to find myself sometimes thinking about the major diverging points that would have been responsible for altering the course of the adventure beyond recognition. Here's a couple of examples:
    • PROLOGUE: Doop could have easily went to the escape pods and landed on the Smuggler's Moon without facing Snote. Yet since he decided to do so, it started a chain of events which ended in me having to establish the Chiss as a reasonable factor in the storyline. Snote was locked as a major antagonist for the Act from that point, yet even I wasn't certain of his motives for a long time.
    • This led to the creation of Missy, as I knew that I now needed a Chiss viewpoint.
    • CHAPTER 1: Such a simple choice, but - what if Darth Saber was picked to follow the ways of the dark side. Just consider it. Just consider the ramifications on the entire plot.
    • Darth Saber opening the Rakatan Obelisk in Chapter 11 would have been the *least* of the changes that would have to be made to the story.
    • CHAPTER 2: If Doop picked the Rust Legion absolutely over the Mandalorians, there would have been no Siege of Grabba's Palace. Instead, I imagine it would probably have looked like an infiltration with lots of jokes aimed at spy tropes. I also imagine he would have become more of a Neutral Evil character rather than the True Neutral character that he is.
    • CHAPTER 3: If Missy went to Grand Admiral Snote instead of panicking and trying to escape (this one shocked me, as I expected that she would do her duty). Had she stayed with the Ascendancy, there would be no point in fleshing out Dantooine. It would literally be like a bus-stop for ASC Blueballs and nothing more. This would irrevocably change the entire second half of the Act.
    • CHAPTER 7: If Doop didn't kick The Quirk in the nethers and left her unconscious as he ran away holding Saber in his arms whilst shouting "For Fux's Sake!". I initially planned The Quirk as the bounty hunting member of the team. Yet suggestions are law, and now the story has taken a different turn than the one I had previously assumed.
    • CHAPTER 8: If Jun Bland decided to join the Republic at the end of the chapter, I would have been forced to paint the Republic in a more favorable light for the remainder of Act I. The corruption would come into play in the second Act, at the earliest. This would mean that the welcoming party for Doop and Saber in Chapter 10 would have been Republic troops instead of the Imperial garrison.
    • CHAPTER 11: This chapter served to determine who the victor of Dantooine would end up being, on account of the choices Saber and Jun would make. It could have been any of the following: the Secret Wire, the Imperials, the Republic, the Dantooine Resistance, the Chiss Ascendancy - yep, there was even an outcome where the army of Gungans would be the only force left standing.
    • Also, if Saber didn't choose to contact General Fux at the end of Chapter 11, then there would be no reason to have him split from the main group - as he would give up on the Empire altogether. This would transition him from a Lawful Good character into more of a Neutral Good one. Now, he's spending his time waging a war for the glory of the Empire - walking the same path that his father has in the past. I imagine it's going to be interesting to explore the effects a war could have on a gentle giant like Saber in Act II.
Honestly, because I thought no one would expect it. I am glad that I did, in the end, as Jun's inclusion really spiced up the Dantooine plot. However, the alternative would have allowed us to flesh out the Secret Wire far more than the version of them that we received, which I always found a bit of a shame.
Quite. Haven't had a proper gaming session in months, and China is such a cheesy empire to play in the early-game that I find it extremely enjoyable.
    @madarabg's photoshops were always on-point.

Well, lads and ladies! The time has come for me to unveil the new character redesigns for our four main heroes (the Consular didn't change that much, so I won't be including him). First up, we have Doop Skychafer.

As you can see, Doop's gotten a bit more grim coming into Act II. He's got longer, somewhat unkempt-looking hair. The new robe's a bit more fashionable, but also darker as a result. The Jedi earthly-brown color is all but gone and replaced with the scarlet burgundy that we've come to associate with Doop. He's also sporting new lightsabers with the two remaining crystals that Saber found in the cave (yellow for gold, and green for credits - the two things Doop loves most in the galaxy). The shoulder-pad is Mandalorian, and it references his choice on Nar Shaddaa to pick them over the Rust Legion. Overall, it's meant to look rather composite - especially with that makeshift sash wrapped beneath his normal belt. He's no longer an official member of the Jedi, but it's still a visible part of him.

Next up, we have Darth Saber. He's now fully clad in armor - really embracing that Sith Juggernaut look. His nose now more faithfully represents the detail panel version of it, and there's a scar across his eye as a result of his decision to go to war at the end of Act I. He's still sporting his iconic purple lightsaber and even has a longer cape!

Missy has gone full Red. She's no longer just a Chiss Scientist of the Ascendancy. Her new attire still references her science uniform in lots of ways, yet it is now designed to be more durable and combat-ready. Despite it looking more like an outlaw suit by design, it has retained a couple of scientific gadgets around to reinforce the notion that Missy still does the math.

Jun Bland is now sporting a sniperish longcoat. He's got bullets encircling his belt and the torso armor is a bit more protective. The facial tattoos have been expanded in a couple of places and if you notice the armor's details - he's wearing Musco's shoulder-pad and ammo satchels. Other than that, he's still the same old Jun Bland - beyond a subtle change in hairstyle, most of his perpetually yellow mellow features have remained.

Our characters are back and better than ever!! They look great!

What have you done to us Al, this isn't even an "update" strictly speaking, but I'm still super excited about it. You got me good man... hook, line, and sinker. :D

Mah boi Saber looking dapper as usual. Imagine if Steve and him crossed paths again. :D
It would be quite the reunion!

I love Missy's new hairstyle. Somehow you also made her look even more haughty with that expression. Doop looks like he hasn't had a proper sleep in weeks and Jun Bland reminds me of how Mynock went from part 1 to part 2 from the old series. I still remember when Lankist used to do this whenever a thread was about to reach the cap. :D

I really like your new art style, as similar to before as it is. It really shows your dedication and skill.
Perhaps you should start charging us...

Thank you, @Alamact, for a great comic. I've honestly forgotten when and where I jumped on the bandwagon (I think it was in one of the Missy segments), but I've thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Can't wait for Act II.

All of the character design updates look great, and I love that you actually gave explanations for the design choices, and didn't just go for "It looks cool" as a rationale.

You know, you look at Jun with Musco's shoulder pad and bandolier and you think it's just a touching way for him to remember a fallen hero. It's showing that Musco is still with us in spirit.

And then you realize what Jun had to do to recover that equipment in the first place and everything takes a dark turn.

    Make ratings great again!
Wait till you see the Steve redesign! It was done by Lankist, and it is my personal favorite.
But it does look cool, right?
It is a bit of an odd way to tell a story, and sometimes the BioWare references do tend to get lost in translation, I agree. At any rate, I'd like to thank everyone for their kind words and hope that you'll stick around as we descend into...

I did warn you that we had a rather "episodic" name. I would be genuinely surprised if it doesn't end up being used for Episode IX or something. It's a well-known, well-loved subtitle from the old EU and it seemed to fit into the general bones of the Second Act's structure. To tell you as to what the title directly alludes to would be a blatant spoiler, but it does have some significance with the old adventure and characters. With that said, here is but a taste of the new characters we'll be interacting with come November. I was hesitant to include more, as with these I'm fairly certain we'll actually be interacting with during the duration of the Act.

The intent is to the make the start of Act II newcomer-friendly. Thanks to these brief intros into each of the existing characters, any potential reader and player would be able to easily jump into the plot with mild confusion, as opposed to a severe one.

So I'd assume we'd meet the actual Master of the Pantry, Lord Oreganos?
