Well obviously, Max, I have not yet seen the movie! I honestly have no idea whether it emulates the EU or not! :) Certainly it has avoided the EU in the sense of the movies being about Jacen/Jaina and Darth Caedus and young Anakin Solo getting killed and Admiral Thrawn and DARTH PLAGUEIS (*runs!*). I just meant in the sense that there was supposedly yet ANOTHER superweapon... ho hum... Suncrusher.... Exar Kun... yada yada. And that they did not at least /try/ to pick up where the OT had left off. I would have liked to have seen Leia presiding over a 30-year Pax Skywalkerana, with her biggest dilemma whether to step down after two terms (as Mon Mothma did) or to submit herself for another election, since she doesn't like whom she sees in the offing.... then BOOM! Something big and catastrophic happens out of nowhere, that reveals a new enemy and forces all the old heroes to mobilize. Maybe that is too much like the Prequel Trilogy as it turned out, though, and perhaps too much like the EU as well. ;)

I guess what each sees as fan service may be different. The idea of the new republic and NJO have always screamed fan fiction to me. I think dumping that in favor of the continued war and a failed attempt to reconstitute the Jedi is the exact sort of thing that makes for great stories but no fan would ever think to ask for. We are not picking up on "happily ever after" 30 years later just in time to see a new crisis. We are seeing the effects of 30 years of stories and drama that have taken place off screen, just like the OT did back before the PT filled in that gap. Complex characters and complex stories that occur both on and off screen. Our heroes and villains are not where or what you'd expect them to be if you drew a straight line from point a (Endor) to point B (TFA). That to me is the essence of denying fan service and the antithesis of what constituted most of the EU. But that is just my interpretation of what we've heard.

The Prequel Trilogy,The Clone Wars,Rebels,The Original Trilogy, and The Sequel Trilogy all have been stated as Canon. I'm not sure why we are still arguing this.
I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that Disney/Lucasfilm are going to ignore the prequels. There are just as many prequel fans as there are original trilogy fans.Disney is not going to lose one crowd to please another. I am a big fan of the Original Trilogy.I'm a fan of the PT,too. I loved the Clone Wars and love Rebels.

The new trilogy will please both camps, and I believe it will bring us all together as Star Wars fans. Then the Force will "Awaken " and continue it's 38 + years of greatness!!!
