But why would R2 be so chummy with Snoke?

True, R2 is a pretty good judge of character, even showing concern when Anakin was turning evil in the PT.

I mentioned this before, in that teaser, when Luke touches R2 there is a distinctive sound effect that makes me think he is using the force somehow, does anyone else notice this? any ideas?

I think that was just echo that followed all of Luke's lines. What that echo means is up for debate though.

that younger luke voice might not be in the film, its the echoed luke voice we hear in the background.we hear that voice in one of the scenes of the film where he is probably in a really rough patch and thinks about the past and suddenly understands how powerful he is because the force awakened ...

No, I'm not talking about the echo, it's not a voice, it's a sound that starts exactly when Luke puts his hand on R2.

All I hear it a percussive hit in the orchestra; I think they just timed it well with the visual.

Edit: damn, watching the trailer again (especially at full volume with headphones on) just got me anxious again for December 18th. Thinking of the movie in abstract terms has been helping me deal with the time, but now it's all real again. Might have to do a SW marathon soon to quench this feeling.

There is an orchestral bass hit at the same time his hand touches R2. It is then accentuated by a low rumble sound. I don't THINK it means anything. They always do that in trailers so that the subwoofers in the theater shake. And everyone knows how bass makes you wet your pants for something. Or is it crap your pants??

Evil R2 would explain why he wasn't chummy with BB-8 at Celebration. Re-watch both trilogies to see who's been the puppet-master. Who led the Empire to Tattooine? And Hoth? Poisoned Yoda? blast... Luke probably gets murdered in the Death Star raid if R2 doesn't get smoked.

And where did R2 even come from? Wait for it.... Naboo...home of THE EMPEROR. Oh... his best friend? built by Darth Vader.

    I rest my case.

It's very likely misdirection and if some of the rumours are indeed correct, then this might be the academy force vision and its destruction?

I guess you guys are right, it seems like it's simply percussion and maybe I'm reading too much into it, I just found the timing curious.

Yes. I think the article is alluding to what Luke is feeling as he touches R2. Is he touching R2 in a friendly way, like he hasn't seen him in a long time? Or did Luke and R2 see something that made Luke intensely angry (like dead padawans/innocents/friends)? Think back when Anakin was holding his dying mother. Sad until she passed, then SUPER angry. Same thing could be what Luke is feeling, but in a more controlled manner.

Ok im probably gonna end up hated for this comment but oh well. Lets set the records strait seeing as no one seems to remember when luke lost his hand against vader it was replaced with a prostectic that resembled flesh and even had artificial nerves and from that moment to the end of ROTJ the only damage to his limbs was a blaster bolt to the prostetic hand that was mostly a superficial hole in the fleshlike casing. now look again at the image its an obvious low grade prosthetic hand resting on top of R2's dome, and the arm is much to thin to be that of Mark Hamil, so speculation or not with just simple observation its is most definitely not Luke in that scene its either a flashback of Anakin or the mystery MVS character. there is a chance I could be wrong and I just might be but im pretty sure im dead on.

I posted a thread which was merged with another Snoke thread

I posted the theory theory that darth vader made snoke out of Luke's hand and using the force in his hand making a force enchanted droid thus aiding the rumors of luke's blue lightsaber in episode 7

Don't you think it is completely plausible that his prosthetic hand was replaced during the last 30-35 years? Don't you think that is more probable than the trailer to be deliberately deceiving us? If we can't even trust what we are shown on the trailer then we know almost nothing about the movie.

I think maybe Luke was speaking to the audience, as the next thing that is shown is the release date. Maybe this hints at the idea that "everyone" in TGFFA "has that power too", and the ST will deal with the number of force sensitives mastering their powers on their own terms, bereft of the guidance of either light or dark side training?

On the subject of the hand in the shot with "Luke" and R2, though - the first official image I recall seeing was the robotic hand holding the handwritten card from JJ thanking his crew. I remember thinking at the time that "the hand" was an odd thing to show. Is it Luke's, is it 3PO without covering, is it Anakin, is it someone else? Clearly, the robotic hand was always meant to be enigmatic and set us talking. Personally, I think it's Luke. I understand the argument that the hand looks like a downgrade from the hand we saw in ESB, but who's gonna notice that? Luke has a robot hand, even the most casual SW viewer knows that: saying its a different or wrong hand makes no difference as far as I'm concerned. (If the casual movie viewer can't be relied on to remember Plagueis being mentioned, they can hardly be expected to pick-up on a robot hand not being exactly the same over two movies separated by 30 years of screen time - and let's not forget, Anakiin's hand changed between movies, too....)

It's Luke and he killed some kind of cult. They were probably trying to resurrect an old Sith or maybe Vader (which makes more sense why Luke would get emotionally involved if it was the latter). Luke's outfit symbolizes his internal struggle, and this SWI article provides further evidence for it. It may be one of the rare exceptions where a Reddit post was right.
