There had been a lot of speculation that the new Jon Watts Star Wars show on Disney+ was going to take place in the High Republic era. However, the new Vanity Fair article just out revealed that it will be in the same time frame as The Mandalorian and that Jon Favreau is involved.

No title has been given to the series yet (it's code name is Grammer Rodeo) but the article revealed it will feature four children around the age of 11. It's described as a homage to the classic Amblin Entertainment coming-of-age adventure films of the 1980s (E.T, the Goonies, Gremlins, etc.)

Given this.......one has to wonder: is this a Jedi Academy series??!?

FWIW, Watts turned down helming Marvel's Fantastic Four to do this series.

I was thinking the same for quite some time now. Everything adds up.
    - children centric
    - set after ROTJ
    - the working title is grammar rodeo (that sounds very school like)

Calling it now- it's the rumored Luke & Ben Solo show.

That all certainly adds up... I would be shocked if it actually focused on Luke and Ben though.

Actually, now that I am thinking of the timeline, I guess it would have to be a young Ben Solo, right? I was going to discount it on the basis of Adam Driver clearly not being involved but he wouldn't need to be. So this could absolutely involve him. I still don't think Luke would be too heavily featured... just something similar to what we have gotten recently with him in Mando and BoBF, which is still plenty amazing. Maybe a group of kids gets separated from the rest of the academy? Whether Ben is or isn't involved I think this could be a really compelling series.

FYI, the working title is from an episode of The Simpsons where the kids skip school and take a road trip.

Ah, that was a great episode.

What if the show actually has the exact same storyline.
Ben and three kids skip Luke's school lesson and go on an adventure. I would definitely watch that.

I agree with @DarthSnow, seeing Luke in a more prominent role is unlikely.

I don't know if the showrunners would or wouldn't want to feature Luke Skywalker in a supporting role in a new series. But if they don't, it won't be because of the limitations of the technology involved. Anyone who watched TBoBF's Luke Skywalker episode can see that there's been amazing progress on the Deep Fake front since the character's surprise appearance in Mando S2:E8.

In the Gallery episode on the making of TBoBF, Mark Hamil talked about the creation of his '1984-era' Luke and said it was about inventing an entirely new approach to acting. He said it was a collaborative process involving him, a younger actor, the Deep Fake guy, and the director. To me, his comments were reminiscent of what Andy Serkis said about the revolutionary (for its time) process involved in his creation of Gollum for Peter Jackson's LOTR movies twenty-plus years ago.

While the TBOBF Luke looks good, I do hope they just use Graham Hamilton as Luke. There is no Deep Fake needed here.

I agree that Graham Hamilton is a good look-alike. But keep in mind that the process is more than Luke's appearance -- it also included recreating Mark Hamil's voice from 1984.

I think the lookalike tech is here to stay, especially after considering Kennedy's comments:

I agree with you @NinjaRen that its not really necessary, but now that they have established the precedent, I don't think there is any going back.

I think the acting is the biggest problem of this deep fake technology. It doesn't look quite real yet. You can easily tell that the face is not the real deal. Life action acting can hardly be achieved digitally. But we are getting there for sure.

But I still prefer recast over digital recreating people any day.

In the end I don't really care about look and voice resemblance that much. What's much more important is the performance of the actor/actress. If you move and act like the character than it's much easier to buy that's actually the same person.

You are probably right. But I do think they will only use this for minor character appearences. If Luke ever gets a bigger role, than he will be completely played by one actor. Just because of money reasons alone.

But we are getting off topic here :3

Considering my dislike of the MCU Spider-man films, I'm not that thrilled about Jon Watts directing Star Wars films or series.

Maybe I'm just easily fooled but - DAMN - I thought that the Luke in Episode 6 of TBoBF looked LIGHTYEARS BETTER he did in his scenes in the Mando Season 2 finale.
    It's certainly less expensive. :)
I totally agree, NinjaRen. Recasting has been around since the beginning of theatre.

My personal opinion is that this business of 'we can't recast OT characters' came about because of what happened in the Solo movie. While I am well-aware that others here disagree, I thought they miscast the actor who played Han Solo. They went for a pretty-boy lookalike rather than finding an actor who could capture the essence of the character Harrison Ford created: By that I mean the 'I'm in this way-over-my-head' guy who tries to hide it with a cocky, 'never-tell-me-the-odds,' attitude.
