I've just finished reading Battlefront: Twilight Company. I was skeptical at first since it had no major Star Wars characters, just like I was skeptical about Rogue One. However, now that I've finished it, I think it's one of my top favorite Star Wars books.

So, with Rogue One following the same lines, being a war story and not really involving any major OT characters, I feel R1 could really be a hit! (Other than being a hit simply cause it has Star Wars in the title)

For those that have read Twilight Company, do we see a similar style in R1? For example, there is a lot of fighting in Twilight Company but the story does not go into much detail of battles. You either get a quick overview of the battle or get some backstory of the battle after it's over.

Does Rogue One dig deep into some long battle scenes?

I completed the Twilight Company book and I like what they started here. I have not been one that is big that all Star Wars must involve Jedi and Skywalkers. I think this Universe is only limited by the imagination of the Lucas Story Group. What I like about this book is they established a new SW character; twilight company itself. This of how good it would be to follow this company through the entire galactic war and into the TFA period. The company changes its people, but the spirit of the company is interpreted through successive generations. That is a very cool idea that can make the star wars universe very intersting.

I think they were writing about the general style of the way the hardcore battles worked which we never got around to seeing in the previous live-action films .

I think the battlefront book is more what you should expect to see in Rouge One.

I think we have to also consider this is being spun as a "heist film". So, while we may have Rogue Squadron and realistic combat in the movie, I don't think it will reach Battlefront levels. Movies have a more linear story-line, and in Twilight Company, it was every other page a blast went off that cause people to look and fight back their assailants, and then return to the main story.

Twilight Company was based on Bttlefrnnt as a video game. R1 is a heist film add while it's a realistic combat scenario and the book is as well, it makes sense for them to be linear .

Is it really a Heist Film?

We know Rogue One is about acquiring the Death Star plans but we don't know the manner of which that happens. Yes, it could be through an "Oceans 11" or "Italian Job" type heist.

However, the movie has officially been described as a War movie. We know that "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR"

So, I'm expecting a Twilight Company style movie where a small group is tasked with capturing the plans during the course of a ground invasion.

Supposedly, the idea for the move came from two lines in the opening crawl of A New Hope: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."

This would lead me to believe that there will be a significant battle in the film - possibly a space battle, but there's enough wiggle room to include a ground battle as well.

The "Heist Film" description has come up enough that I tend to believe it, so my feeling is that the heist portion of it will take up the majority of the movie, with the battle scene at the end giving the team the opening they need to ultimately get the plans.

It's Star WARS. We're gonna see a war, like we did in every movie, with a battle of some sorts. So while I expect to see a war with many real life soldiers, we have to consider stealing the battle plans wouldn't be all out action. You can't oppose a regime unless you have equal power. If not, it's the occasional major battle, mostly guerrilla warfare, and a greater emphasis on intel, spying, and stealing.

I had similar thoughts after reading the Twilight Company - that Rogue One might hit some of the same beats, at least thematically. If they keep their word (and I want them too) to have no Jedi, this is what I want to see. Ordinary soldiers - boots on the ground - with maybe an expert or two, fighting a superior force in terms of numbers and equipment and, if we count Vader, power. In fact, Vader's scene from Twilight Company when he simply destroys rebels on Hoth is Vader I want to see. If used sparingly, he will have a devastating impact - on our new heroes and on the viewers.

Hopefully a gritty war film with proper battles, but with the heist element, remember the crawl to ANH mentioned Rebel Spies stole Death Star plans

Makes me wonder if the battle is really just a diversion to mask the heist!

I read Twilight Company at its release, and have hoped ever since that R1 will have the same tone as the novel. With the exception of the Katniss-type "heroine," I still think we might get just that. Very hopeful!

Rogue One has been described in the past as showing some of the grey between the light and dark side of the Star Wars. I think in this regard it will be similar to Battlefront Twilight Company. The book gave us several examples of individuals switching sides in the conflict or characters who were more disillusioned with the war. The closest thing I can think of in the Star Wars sense would be the Republic Commando books. Those books also gave us a look at the people drawn into the middle of the war. That's what I'm hoping Rogue One will continue to do.
