Absolutely. This is no way to just 'get rid' of such an iconic character and actress. If they do this I alongside fans everywhere will be very upset:(

I'd be disappointed but I'd get it.

They really can't win with any decision.

What if General Leia doesn't die in Ep 8 or off-screen in Ep 9...but, yes, by the end of the ST, she is gone?

Rian Johnson will hopefully be able to tell his story like he set out to do. Ep 9 will assuredly need to be rewritten to take Carrie Fisher's death into account. Thankfully, this ST is about a new generation of Skywalkers, so dealing with this unfortunate event can perhaps be told in a poignant and graceful subplot.

    ---

What comes to mind is the story, and particularly the ending, to C.S. Lewis's novel the Voyage of the Dawn Treader -- the film adaptation changes thematic and metaphysical implications of the ending significantly and should not be regarded. In the novel the only two returning characters are brother and sister duo Edmund and Lucy Pevensie. Prince Caspian is now a king who leads an expedition in his ship Dawn Treader over the seas to the eastern end of the world to find the seven lost Lords of Narnia. Essentially, these lords were excommunicated from the lands of Narnia after Prince Caspian's father died and during a temporary reign of his uncle who expunged the lands of those loyal to the former king. As the story goes, the final three lords are found on the Island of Ramandu, a fallen star. Unfortunately, the three lords are in a deep sleep from which the voyagers are unable to wake. Ramandu's daughter suddenly appears and tells the voyagers that seven years earlier, the three lords argued over their mission. Should they remain at the island, sail onwards, or to return to Narnia? In the midst of this heated debate, one of the lords picked up the knife, which the White Witch had used centuries before to kill Aslan. This knife is a sacred relic, so this blasphemous act caused the three lords to fall into an enchanted sleep. Caspian and his friends are told that the only way to awaken the three lords is to sail to the end of the world and to leave behind at least one member of the crew. Chief Mouse of Narnia, and pugnacious crew member, Reepicheep volunteers. He paddles in a small coracle beyond a wall of water at the eastern edge of the world. It's a momentous sacrifice from a minor character that allows life in Narnia to return to normalcy in the shadow of the White Witch's lasting effects over the world.

    ---

Ep 9's crawl (first paragraph): "General Leia is missing in action. After embarking on a search for Snoke, the Resistance failed to establish communications with her starship, which is presumed to be outside the galaxy." General Leia is on a mission beyond the veil of stars outside the galaxy, because she has new intel as to the whereabouts of Snoke -- the intel comes from holorecordings encrypted by Yupe Tashu. What were the Emperor's true intentions for galactic dominance, and how is Snoke pursuing a similar goal by casting a deep shadow across the galaxy?

Ep 9's subplot: This underlying story would involve Luke splitting from Rey, who is now trained in the ways of the Force, because he has a promise to keep from a dear friend and sister. Luke goes off in search of Leia. I think this would poignantly mirror how Leia searches for her brother in TFA. This subplot would provide a nice bookend to the ST.

Luke's travels take him on a journey as a detective across the galaxy not unlike Obi-Wan's involvement in AOTC. He meets many strange aliens along the way, who help him unlock the mystery of his sister's whereabouts.

Eventually, at the end of his journey, Luke finds Leia. But he is too late! His sister has been destroyed by some machination of Snoke. Obi-Wan Kenobi suddenly appears and tells Luke that in order for her to live on as a Force ghost, he must become one himself -- Luke and Leia are twins formed by the midichlorians that bind them.

The final scene of the ST would show Luke and Leia's funeral on Naboo much like the final scene of the PT showed Padme's funeral. They would be buried next to their mom -- a graceful allusion to the real life tragedy of a mother and daughter dying within one day of each other.

    ---

I do believe the fate of Anakin's lightsaber, akin to the knife that the White Witch used to kill Aslan or even King Arthur's Excalibur, will have to be told in the main plot of Ep 8 and Ep 9 with Rey, Finn, Kylo, and Poe. It's too bad we never saw young Anakin build the damn thing in the PT!

I still believe that she NEEDS a to come back after the injustice that was done to her in TFA

My desire has been to see Princess/General Leia conclude her story as she should. It makes sense for her to see her brother again, and her son again. As a mother and sister, her duties to the story need to be fulfilled. Her character is so important. They can't write her out or kill her off-screen, a recast seems just as off-the-table as CG, judging by Disney's statement. So I hope Episode VIII took care of some of this.

No matter what they do, star wars fans will be in an uproar! There's already talk of cutting her out of TLJ which is a rumor so far, anyway; If they CG her, replace her, write her off screen the fandom will be disappointed. How will they do it only time will tell.

Well that's the spirit;). Those rumors are far from confirmed. Maybe sharpening the pitchforks is for some fans more important then the matter itself.

I feel like that rumor is as substantiated as the "Han Solo will absolutely be in Rogue One now that Alden Ehrenreich has been cast" thing that happened not that long ago. It comes across as tabloid speculation that people are mistaking for fact.

Of f*cking course they're not going to cut Leia out of The Last Jedi. They're going to market Leia substantially to emphasize that this is Carrie Fisher's last performance as the character. I think there's a chance that some footage could be edited out to saved and repurposed for Episode IX instead, but to say that they might ditch her is utterly ridiculous.

As usual, I completely agree with you. It does seem likely that they'll use footage for VIII in IX, if they do bring Leia to that film. Cutting her from TLJ has definitely never been on the table, though.

Anyway, what we do know, aside from the fact she will still be in VIII, is that CG and recasting are not going to happen. Unless they do a complete 180°, but I don't find that a likely possibility. I'd like to think that writing her out off-screen is off the table as well, but their choices are clearly slim, with CG and recasting out of the question. It's hard for me to imagine her making it through Episode VIII, honestly. Maybe she'll be comatose at some point, as the rumors from a while back said, and maybe she'll die from that, anywhere between VIII and the end of IX. Maybe she'll die in a ship explosion, like by the attack that was supposedly going to put her in the coma. Maybe there is no coma or attack though, so I have no idea.

Im guessing she will become M.I.A. between 8 & 9. Explained in Canon novel or comic.

However I'm not a fan of this.

I'd also would add if I was TPTB at LFL & Disney....

I'd push back the release of 9 from 2019 to 2020. This will give the fans more time 2 grieve. Filming for 9 starts in 2018 so I c no problem with rescheduling. For the 2019 window I would release another Anthology film.
