I walked away from the Cantina shortly after TLJ came out. I just couldn't stand all of the TLJ haters who couldn't let it go. No conversation was safe. I let the regurgitated arguments get to me and I got baited into arguing with them. That's my fault but this place lost joy for me.

Of course The Rise of Skywalker teaser has me juiced, like many others I'm sure. My question is, is it safe to have a real discussion again? I don't mind disagreement, but civil discussion would be nice. I know the internet sucks for that but this forum was seriously one of the friendliest online communities I had ever been a part of... until the dark ages began. I just want to speculate and talk with other people who are excited for Star Wars!

it is and always will be safe. you already know what to do: take responsibility for reporting posts that cross the line, ignore members you don't want to engage with, and focus on the stuff that you find satisfying and joyful.

this is a place for everybody; you don't have to agree with what's said, but you do get to choose how (and with whom) you interact.

we're happy to have you back, always! : D

I think you will find it safe. You may want to stay out of the TLJ haters thread, but other then that for the most part people are good.

If you like a movie and go into the hater's thread then you're the troublemaker, not them. The problem was the haters in threads for those who loved the movie.

no, there is no thread here that members should or shouldn't go into. regardless of how someone feels about one of the movies they should be free to post wherever they wish providing they are respectful, on-topic and following the rules of the forum.

I champion the Staff & Moderators here to the point that they probably think i'm an stalking ass-kisser, but i was against the decision to allow those three 'thread for those..' threads to be allowed. they created division, and go against everything i believe in.

If they are made in the ep IX section this December and are allowed to remain.. i will probably consider finding another SW home.
it's 2019.. creating rooms with signs above the door that say "for this type of person only" turns my stomach.

@stencil things are a million times better than they were. there still are and will always be members that are a little more vocal about their opinions than perhaps is healthy, and we will always have members that cross the line.

    welcome back ;)

I can't speak for the past, but I've certainly enjoyed my limited time here. Any disagreement I've had with someone has been completely civil so far for what that small sample size is worth. I'm glad your love of Star Wars is bringing you back around.

And this problem has a name: it's OFF-TOPIC.

You are quite true, from a certain point of view.
But , in another way, this partitionning ensures a place for every point of view, each being discussed while not polluting the other... if all is done correctly.
So, perhaps, the solution could be to label those threads "Why this movie was a fail / Why this movie is a success", who suggests a debate of ideas and arguments, rather than "Thread for those who.... / Thread for those who do not ..." who seem particularly discriminative.

had you put "This is how you deal with opinions you don't agree with:" i would have hit 'wise' or 'great post'.
calling members 'lovers' or 'haters' has been half the problem around here since December 2018.. it's division.

i wish it would stop. the movie 'Gangs of New York' is the only way i can describe how I've seen this forum at times in the last 18 months.

i'm never going to agree with partitioning in any form.

It was explained to me at one point that the threads were allowed at the time to allow a lot of upset members to vent. What actually happened in my opinion is that many members who actually needed some support from us got drowned out. It was like kids in a playground.. and we could only hear the ones shouting loudest.

there were so many members that were (and still are) very VERY upset and confused that they didn't enjoy TLJ.. that they didn't enjoy a Star Wars movie. In my humble opinion.. we as a community let them down very badly.
    exactly.. exactly

Threads must have a clear topic. it would have been perfectly fine to have a thread titled "How Rian Johnson destroyed ep VIII".. it has a direction it can go in, and the mods won't be forever scratching their head about how to keep it on-topic. If someone who disagrees with it starts dropping troll ratings on all the posts in there.. the mods will stop them.

trust in the system here and things will work out fine. show respect at all times & hit that report button when you see something that's not right.

    simples :)

As a someone who disliked TLJ, I welcome you back with open arms. No fans voice should start and end with their like or dislike of a portion of SWdom. I look forward to hear your thoughts on anything and everything SW. I hope you enjoy this next go around.

You can't deny that there are people who have unhealthy opinions about the ST. I'm sorry but that's not our fault. When their opinions are: "Ruin and KK need to be fired! Star Wars is forever ruined! Star Wars is destroyed! " It's one thing to hate or love a movie. It's another thing to do it when you discuss it that fits your narrative. If the fandom was more like @Sparafucile and @NinjaRen who hate TLJ, the fandom would be a lot better off. I haven't seen people in this forum express those opinions, which partly why I joined in the first place.

threads are not the problem. people being abusive, disrespectful, and needlessly vitriolic in the threads is the problem.
and that was dealt with on both sides. belatedly in some cases, but it was dealt with.

the staff nor the moderators named the threads. we allowed you all to express your joys and frustrations in as organically a way as possible.
that wasn't always constructive and we learned a lot from the process as well. things will be different post-December 2019.

some people who could not or outright refused to follow the forum rules were asked to leave after multiple opportunities to correct their behavior.
they were not asked to leave because they had unpopular opinions; they were asked to leave for violating the forum rules.

this is the world that you all make it.
be good stewards, all of you, and everyone can have a place in it. : D

Since I'm new here I can't really speak to pre-existing toxicity, but wanted to share some insight into what I've learned in dealing with the "haters (courtesy of a coworker of mine who is a Star Wars fan but does not like the Sequel Trilogy and believes that Rian Johnson 'ruined' things)": you're not going to change their minds, so all you can do is respectfully "agree to disagree".
