If everything they publicly said is true, then - no. With Colin Trevorrow previously claiming Leia had the bigger role in IX and KK saying that The Last Jedi will remain as is filmed, Leia will live.

Correct, no mention of Leia, just Carrie.

Um... it's not like they're going to re-cast.

Recasting the role would be a big no-no, imo.

If they keep the character alive, it might just not show up onscreen for Episode IX. I think we will have a better idea once we see TLJ.

Poll should have an option for dying in VIII . . . just sayin'

I voted no and here is why:

Carrie's role is too large to just be left out and only referenced for an entire movie. This would not play right. I also find it hard to believe that they have enough stock footage to create a story arc in IX for Leia and having her death occur in the first act of IX would diminish its psychological effect on both the arc and the audience.

I feel she will be killed off in this episode and near the end. It wont be Kylo. In fact, I have a strong feeling that his mother's murder/sacrifice will be monumental to his character development - much more so than with his father's. Snoke will have Leia killed while Kylo is off hunting Luke and will discover this upon his return leaving his character in turmoil and the audience in doubt as to how Kylo will emerge in episode IX.

I could see Snoke or Hux killing Leia (or having Leia killed), and this then makes Kylo Ren snap and he returns to the light.

Edit: @Perdu beat me to it.

I know this is sacrilege for many, if not most, of Star Wars fans, but recasting is not beyond the realm of possibility. If they had a major arc for Leia that has already been set up in TFA and TLJ, they might not be able to 'regroup' as KK put it to satisfy the overall story.

Personally, I always thought that Leia had the greatest chance of surviving the ST. Somehow it made sense since she was the one who sacrificed the most for the galaxy. I don't know, I feel that even Carrie, the embodiment of Leia, would want her story to continue or, at the very least, have a satisfying end.

This is the gist of it. We have to see The Last Jedi and what they did with the character. If the character lives and is not in IX, it has to make sense. Can you see Leia sitting one out while the galaxy struggles to survive? Our Princess/General Leia? Not a chance. Man, eight months to wait for the answers. And then two more years. (we need General Leia emoji - it would mean brokenhearted but also tough as nails :( )

They put out a preemptive anti-backlash announcement that they would not CGI Leia in Episode IX.

I think that's a fairly good sign they'd rather write Leia out than face the backlash from anything that diminishes Carrie's legacy, including recasting one of the most iconic roles in cinema.

Then why not also put out a statement saying they won't recast if they believe backlash would come from that?

I personally can't see a way that Leia is missing from IX. It's either a recast or at least shots where you can't see the actors face and someone does some voice acting.

To me, removing the character altogether would be more diminishing to the legacy than anything. Well except for a bad recast and a poor ending to the character, that would obviously be a travesty.

I think due to the tragic event of Carries passing, it's almost forced the issue of our princess becoming one with the force.

I would prefer not to assume she is killed, rather an event leads to our precious lady joining our greats of the past, with the force.

They recast Han Solo. Besides, recasting the role doesn't diminish her legacy. If they get a respected. talented actress to complete the part, and keep Billy Lourd as part of her supporting cast, it would not be remotely disrespectful. The people at Lucasfilm loved her. If they think it's okay to recast Leia, and Fisher's family think it's okay to recast Leia - who's to say otherwise?

There is certainly an argument to make that giving the character a proper conclusion to her story-line is the ultimate tribute. I say leave it up to those that knew her. Whatever they decide is appropriate is what should be done.

They cast a young Han Solo.

Imagine if Harrison Ford didn't want to come back for TFA so they cast Bryan Cranston instead.

And if Fisher had decided she didn't want to come back, it would be a completely different issue.

...how? Fans wouldn't react well to a re-casting, I'm not sure what the difference is between Han and Leia in that respect?

What if they go with something crazy to solve the problem:

Like Princess Leia changing form? Becoming a Bendu type of character... becoming one with the Force... merging with Luke... merging with Rey?!?!

There are crazy exits for that one... and a lot of creative people around the table.

I mean, this isn't The Matrix Revolutions.... but considering what they're (apparently) doing with Ahsoka....

    Maybe ?!

Rian Johnson and what we hear from TLJ... they seem to go deep in the mythical side of the Force.

FIRST TO MAKE THIS PREDICTION RIGHT HERE:

The Last Jedi is the ANTI-Midichlorian movie.

    My prediction:

Leia will wish to do whatever she can to bring back her son and Anakin will appear to her. He will help Leia become one with the Force (using up the last of his consciousness) so she can become more powerful and speak to Ben through the Force.

This will be a huge emotional pay off - it will enable Anakin to do something right for his daughter for once. It will enable Leia to forgive her father. And it will provide a means to have Leia not meet a brutal end but continue on in some form, fulfilling her legacy.
