Do you have any links to anything? I'd be curious to learn more. The tricks I've seen involved just cutting it out of the film.

I can see it working either way. I don't really care, as long as they come up with a good story - but I can see why you would object.

It could add something, if the writers are looking for a reason for Luke to reengage. He might feel more of a responsibility to train Obi-Wan's heir than he would a complete stranger. Rey being a Kenobi would create a unique dynamic between her and Luke from a storytelling perspective.

Searching through my old posts is not producing the results I wanted. I'm beginning to think it was on a different message board somewhere.

The gist of the guy's counter argument was that China actually censors things that support cults or superstitions - not necessarily ghosts. And while movies with ghosts do get banned, it's inconsistent not an absolute ban.

His most convincing point was that right before TFA was released, they showed the OT in China, and weren't required to remove the Force Ghosts from those films.

But he also pointed out that Crimson Peak and the new Ghostbusters getting banned got a lot of press, yet you don't hear about films like the the Pirates of the Caribbean series, which is very popular in China . Those movies had to make some cuts (the one I remember is that the ghosts couldn't be cannibals) but they still had lots of ghosts in the Chinese versions of the films.

Sometimes when the censors do object, filmmakers can call the ghosts something like "visions" in the translation, and that gets them around the ban. Or they say the character seeing the ghosts is drunk, crazy, dreaming, etc.

I wish I could find the post and it's links, because I don't remember all the details and I know I'm forgetting stuff. I know he had several examples of western movies with ghosts that were shown in China.

    I'll keep looking.

I have to say suggesting only Skywalker can be emotionally satisfying ignores adoption as an option.

Ben was the emotionally satisfying choice but he fell. The whole saga turns on what should have been part of the "happily ever after." Enter Rey. She rises from nothing out of no where. She is picked by the Force not by genetics. She crosses the galaxy to bring a hero back to the "only fight that matters." In doing so becomes the true Padawan. She is adopted into the family. Remembering that Lucas had adopted children might suggest the possibility that he might have considered that.

Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm President: “No, I think [the question of Rey’s parentage] is integral. I think it is important. I think it’s something that – you know, interestingly enough, even when we were sitting and coming up with Episode VII The Force Awakens – it was one of the central questions we were all asking ourselves. So it’s not surprising that the audience is gonna continue to answer…er, I suppose ‘ask‘ that – we have to answer it at some point. I think that’s what everybody’s intrigued by – do we answer that now [or] do we answer it later? I’m not going to answer that!” <laughs> “There’s no question that this is set up as a trilogy. And that three act structure of the set up, the conflict, and the resolution very much is what we have planned. But we do try hard to have these films stand on their own so you’re not just feeling like you got dropped in the middle of something but it’s actually promising something more and maybe even something better.” (April 16, 2017)

Rian Johnson, director and writer of The Last Jedi: “[Rey shows up on Luke’s island] both not knowing what’s going to happen and also having a lot of expectations in her head about how this is going to go. It very much feels like what we all go through in adolescence, the dawning of this new chapter of our lives. [The deepening of familial themes in Episode VIII is] a huge part of especially Rey’s character, something that was a really powerful part of her setup and something I really wanted to dig into with this.” (January 9, 2017)

Rian Johnson: “[Are we going to find out who Rey’s parents are?] Mmmmmm….! It’s something that is absolutely going to be addressed in the movie. There won’t be… [There won’t be clarification?] It depends on…I’m not, I can’t say – I was about to say something! You almost got me! You almost got me! Is it [a circle of trust here?] <stares into the camera> Is it now!? <laughs> This is how they get ya! It will absolutely be addressed in the movie. To say more would be…[It will be addressed?] yeah, yeah. It’s tough because this is the other element of the secrecy of it all is, the other part of it is there are lots of surprises in this movie…there’s lots of twists and turns and I really want people to experience those when they see the movie for the first time and how we address that and how you feel about it and what happens with that is one of them so…” (April 14, 2017)

Rian Johnson: “Well, I think sort of by necessity ‘yes’ [there is an impulse to ‘echo’ the middle chapters of the previous Star Wars trilogies like George Lucas did] just because it’s a middle chapter of a three part story. And so it’s gonna be the one where you slow down a little bit and kind of dig into the characters and figure out, ok, you’ve had this spectacular set up. You’ve met these characters and you care about them. This is the part where we kind of define them so that [in] the closing chapter you care about where they end up. So, because of that by necessity there are some things that are definitely gonna be echoes of what happens in one of the best middle chapters of all time, you know, The Empire Strikes Back. But, it’s also I think hopefully wholly unique because these are different characters than there were in Empire and they’re on different paths and they’re in different places in their lives, so.” “[Answering some questions and bringing up new questions in The Last Jedi – will it create more questions than answers? Will the fans be satisfied in terms of the lingering questions from The Force Awakens?] Well, I don’t know. I hope that they’re satisfied but I also, you know – the least interesting thing in the world I think is just, ‘here’s the answer to your question,’ sliding the piece of paper over. But at the same time, the goal was never to, you know, ‘let’s draw up more mys…more questions!’ You know, so…put it this way – I hope that it’s emotionally satisfying. That’s always the goal for me and so it’s never to kind of play coy and kind of toy people along. It’s always about what’s gonna be emotionally satisfying and what’s gonna make sense for these characters.” (April 15, 2017)

Colin Trevorrow, director and writer of Star Wars: Episode IX: “I’ve seen all of the theories. I have to practice how to answer these questions.” “We’re going to make sure that that answer [of Rey’s lineage] is deeply and profoundly satisfying.” “Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy.” “She deserves it. We’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we’re just telling you what happened.” “I love Rey. But I love her. And I love what she represents in that universe and where we can take her. It’s pretty incredible.” “What’s interesting is I’m not creating a host of new characters. I have a lot of characters that people really love that we’re going to make sure are all honored. No one’s going to be left behind.” “[I want want the presence of Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher to be even greater in my film. I can’t wait] to find new places that we can take those characters.” “They are icons, but they’re also people that have suffered tremendous loss and challenge over the course of all these films.” “By the time we get to Episode IX, I look at that movie as one movie, as three movies, as six movies, and as nine movies. It’s something that needs to honor a story that has been told over a period of 40 years.” “I don’t want to ignore any of it, and I respect all of it. It’s something I think the fan base is going to embrace.” (January 12, 2016)

I am beginning to see how this topic has reached 433 pages. I think most people are fairly entrenched in their own theories, i am. I have tried to envision Rey finding out she is a Skywalker, but it just doesn't feel right.

Daisy is quoted as saying -

"I thought a lot was answered in ‘The Force Awakens’. Then after the screening I went for a drink with my agent and everyone, and we were chatting away and I realized that oh, in their minds it’s not answered at all!"

What did the majority of people think after watching the movie? that she is Rey Skywalker.
But this quote suggests that most people didn't realise certain large hints, that don't say who she is, but rather who she isn't. Such as when Rey says "Luke Skywalker? i thought he was a myth". Yet despite this hint, most people still cling to the Rey Skywalker theory. This is just my view of that quote by Daisy, which most Pro Skywalker theorists use as Rey Skywalker evidence. I doubt Daisy would spend time looking up theories online, so probably she mostly hears Rey skywalker believers.

    edit -

“I’d love to see the look on people’s faces,” she said. “But with answers come more questions, and there’s definitely going to be enough to keep people going for another two years!”

Finding out that what 99% of ppl believe is correct, is not going to create much emotion on peoples faces. Whatever the answer is, it will generate more questions. The only question generated by a Rey Skywalker reveal is why she was left on Jakku (already a question). Finding out she is the granddaughter of Obi Wan, will generate a few more questions.

Nobody else agrees with Daisy Ridley that's Rey's parentage was outright revealed in TFA. She's totally off on her own on that one. Just read and watch what the directors and writers and Kennedy and the other actors have said about it. They contradict her. TFA wasn't designed to answer the question.

Let's remember, Mark Hamill wasn't told Darth Vader was his father until right before the scene was shot. I doubt Daisy knew who her parents were when they filmed The Force Awakens. If she's so sure it's obvious in TFA, she should just say who it is. If she's a nobody, they should just be saying that now. They're not.

Also, I do think Rey is a Solo based on TFA and other things... (like how they were looking for Carrie lookalikes when casting). Her time with Leia and Han in TFA was still more than Luke and Leia got with either of their parents.

I thought Solo or Skywalker. After the movie I thought very low chance of Skywalker because of Maz's line about "the're not coming back." I thought this made it pretty clear. I still wanted Solo but that gets very convoluted.

I think random is more likely but I do have a pet theory where she is a grand daughter of Palpatine and Luke has to get the Resistance and the 1st Order to peace talks and it hinges on convincing 1st Order/Old Imperials that she is the heir to the empire and the only leader who can unify both sides. Imagine Luke arguing Leia out of her life long war to lead a peace establishing a new monarch that would return power to the people.

Maybe she means that it's obvious she isn't a Solo or Skywalker - because Han and Leia don't mention her, only their boy. And because Luke is a Jedi, who formed a new academy then went into exile.

They keep saying her parentage, not parents are the impotant factor.

They didn't mention Rey because it's too traumatic, or because Leia hid Rey from Han. Only Leia could hide the secret of Rey's birth from Snoke because she was strong in the Force.

Echoing the The Empire Strikes Back, the hero and villain will be revealed to be related. But not son and father. Sister and brother.

Think about it. You're Leia and a creepy dark sider is messing up your kid even from the very beginning in your womb. You get pregnant again--you're going to try really really hard to hide this next baby from Snoke, at the same time as you send Ben to train with Luke.

I think Rey figures it out before Ren and reveals it to him. Reversing the reveal in Empire where the villain relays the information to the hero.

Not sure any of the works with the timeline. Ben would have been 9 when Rey was in the womb. We have no idea if Snoke was considered a threat or around at that time. Also (@MagnarTheGreat look away), the book Bloodline came out last year. I highly recommend it. It's about Leia and her family. That book was given the green light because Leia's backstory is fine to tell. It never mentions a daughter. That type of thing would be mentioned or the story group simply doesn't care about their audience. A lost daughter would have been far more traumatic to Han/Leia's relationship than their large adult son betraying Luke.

Kylo and Rey seem close in age, maybe a five year difference. Kylo left Luke for Snoke at a young adult age (?) so Rey would've been born and also around that age when Kylo's treachery occured.

The way Rey's perentage is of significance make me believe that it's something so much bigger.

Rey is about 19 and Kylo is about 30. Based on the MF leaks, we know they filmed scenes of Kylo as a young boy being handed over to Luke by Luke and Leia. Plus Rey sees a young boy in the novelization, again about 10 years old.

So Kylo was around 10 when he went to live with Luke at the Academy, and Rey was left on Jakku 5 years later, probably because Snoke was close to discovering her or had.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 18, 2017, Original Post Date: Apr 18, 2017 ---
The Empire Strikes Back novelization never mentions a daughter. The A New Hope novelization never mentions a son. If they're going for a twist, they're not going to mention it in books. In fact, they'll use the books to drive people off the scent. It's worked.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 18, 2017 ---
The fact is, too, novels don't show us every waking thought of a character like Leia. If she's Rey's mother, she told no one, so she'd have no one to talk to about it in dialogue.

Fake Rian Johnson: "Yeah, sure, put my movie's twist reveal in a book that has a tiny audience and isn't distributed in all the countries that the movies are or translated into all the other languages that the movies are. Good idea."
