Core accents are super sexy in the Star Wars universe and makes it that much harder for Kylo to resist.

And, once again, they cast an American girl to play young Rey for a reason. Could both decisions be clues to her origins? Certainly, but they could also both be merely a matter of convenience as you said. We don't know for sure sure so you shouldn't be so quick to discount any possibility simply because it may go against your own theories. The salvaged computer is a valid option even if it's not a particularly interesting one. Her accent being inherited from someone who died long before she was born is nothing more than fan fiction wishes and is in no way a valid option for why she has that particular accent nor is Rey getting it from her real family a valid option since she hasn't seen them since she was five years old.

While I'm not discounting any theory regarding accents, I do know that they filmed the little Rey scene very last minute on the top of Bad Robot's office building. I don't think there was too much thought out into the casting other than can she look like Rey at a young age.

I think they just wanted to cast a kid who looks like Rey and looks like she was very young. Her scene was just for some seconds, only some fans tried to find out about the actress's accent.

She's a girl. Me and that family became distant with my dad. I don't think I'd recognise her.

It was definitely convenience. They even shot the scene on he roof top of the studio in LA. Clearly this was something JJ wanted to add when he was back in LA and they found the best possible lookalike for Daisy.

I think it's important that when we say "Rey Random", people don't take that as her being someone completely random and pointless. Her origins or background will definitely be of sole importance that connects her to the Skywalker story in my mind - be it a relation to another known character, dark side experimenting or her parents' deaths. After all, we know there is more to Rey than just being a nobody from Jakku...

In the novelization Rey listens something like "I'll be back, sweetheart" at the moment she's left in Jakku. Whoever it was, Rey was convinced that was her family and that person (or people) played that role.

I really want to think that my crazy idea is too much crazy....
But... the more we go further the more I find potential clues...
I've forgot about this one, for example.
Poe says to BB8 " I'll come back for you! It will be alright"
Well, at least it's forshadowing what's going to happen to Rey.

I don't know.... but the more I think about it, the more nothing is satisfying.
    Rey Solo: problems
    Rey Skaywalker: problems
Rey Random: still you have problems.

But.. "Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku, they're never coming back" + "The belonging you seek is not behind you. It is ahead."
She may be a Skywalker not for her parents, but... ahead.

    Hey all!

After nearly being glued stuck at my computer, watching all the livestreams from Celebration (Warwick Davis is awesome), of course last weekend I just had to watch the movies again, as I'm sure lots of you did too.

Now, I watched The Phantom Menace again yesterday and one thing somehow stuck with me this viewing. I'm talking about the scene between Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon and the remark that Qui-Gon already should've been on the Jedi council, if not for his defiance.

So of course I went to my buddy The Internet and found this article:

    http://www.express.co.uk/entertainm...Jinn-granddaughter-Lucasfilm-Disney-Skywalker

First of, forgive me if this has been discussed already. This thread is one of the biggest in the Cantina and honestly, I didn't read every single entry.

Well now. Do I agree with everything in that article? No. However, the article has some interesting things, including the above notion regarding the Jedi Council.
Also, and this is just superficial, if you look at Rey's look from the toy packaging, she does have some similar hairdo a la Qui-Gon. Is this a tribute of some sort?

The article also talks a lot about the - by som, dreaded - term Grey Jedi. Now I personally don't like that term, because isn't a Jedi just a Jedi, meaning a (insert color/ denomination) Jedi isn't a Jedi?
However, considering recent media (Rebels for example), the concept of the Force is being heavily expanded. So what if it's not "grey Jedi", but "evolved Jedi". As an aside, I've talked about this concept on this board in the past.

The article also talks about Qui-Gon and Shmi hooking up, even giving the notion Anakin may in fact have a brother or sister somewhere. Of course this will change everything and I'm hoping this isn't the case.

    tl;dr:

But what if Qui-Gon defying the Council means he - prior to Episode 1 - has had relations with another person, eventually resulting in Rey being a descendant?

This will link the PT and ST even more.
It will give Qui-Gon motivation to look for something 'more', besides the Jedi teachings, eventually discovering knowledge to become a Force Ghost.

Also, at the 40 year panel, Liam Neeson (and Samuel L. Windu) video'd in congratulations, but could there've been an ulterior motive?
A spin-off chronicling Qui-Gon's adventures prior to Episode 1, laying the foundation for some themes about the Force in The Last Jedi?
This would coincide with the decision not to anounce a spin-off 'till after TLJ is released, because TLJ will introduce new aspects to the Force.
The technology already is there to make actors seem younger, in a couple of years tricks like this will even be more seemless.
It could reunite Liam Neeson, Samuel L. Jackson and Ewan McGregor (the last two already wanting to reappear in the SW universe).

    So many possibilities..

    Thanks for considering my rant.

This pretty much sums up the questions about why an American was chosen for a super short shot during a flashback. Again, I'm not drawing too many conclusions from this accent thing other than they chose Rey to have a core world accent. It's not compelling evidence one way or the other. It's just a clue into what the producers were thinking at the time of production.
Thanks for your post! I don't think the video congratulations mean anything. I read the article and there's no real meat to it. The connection they're drawing between floating lights and Qui-Gon is rather tenuous.
I think the term Grey Jedi is my new pet peeve. There's no such thing as a Grey Jedi. You're either a Jedi or your not a Jedi. Qui-Gon had an independent streak, but he was a Jedi. This idea he is "generally accepted to be a Grey Jedi" is nonsense. For what it's worth Pablo Hidalgo has said the same thing.

The thought of a Darth Maul daughter comes to mind lol. He was a Balanced Force User.
She has to be strong in the Force for some reason.
What about the Force Tree piece that Luke gives to Bey Dameron. Does that make her son Poe Dameron Force-Sensitive? Did she give it to a secret daughter called Rey

Maul was in no way, shape, or form a balanced force user. He was consumed by the dark side.

Many jedis, almost 99% of them, are strong with the Force with no reason.

Nobody ever searched if Kenobi's parents are FS, if Ahsoka's parents are FS.

Almost 99,99% of the Force sensitive people are coming from no force sensitive parents.

I read Qui-Gon Jinn's description of him while he was in the final duel scene. It was like he could tell Maul was an ultimate Force User, and describes him as being focused and balanced in the Force. The Emperor had top secret info on Force teachings I would say. And thats what Luke is searching for, or already knows. So how is Rey so strong in the Force hmm

If you look at TFA with no specific ideas, it looks like Rey is much more feeling the Force than using it.

Absolutely this. Using the noun "Jedi" in such a way immediately invokes an implication that "Grey Jedi" are just Jedi who dabble with the Dark Side. Whilst I am not against the use of a "grey" or a "balance" in the sequel trilogy, I am absolutely against using old terms to define completely new concepts in the GFFA. "Jedi" implies that the user would be using the mindset of someone who utilises the Light, and yet "grey" implies a mix of both Light and Dark; these people would be as much "Grey Jedi" as they are "Grey Sith", in my eyes.

Let's not forget, too, that Qui-Gon was much more mindful of the Living Force - a long branch that we could take from midi-chlorians up to Force ghosts and the Force priestesses - than many of his peers, and it was such an ideology and way of thinking that meant he never became a member of the High Council.

The idea of balance is an important one that Lucas himself has talked about on a number of occasions, but never truly cleared up. There were some fundamental flaws with the Jedi Order we saw in the PT - and this was totally by George's design, I'm sure - that, when catalysed by Sidious, ultimately walked them down a path to their own fall. Attachment is forbidden, a particular cell count is used as a measure of Force potential, etc.

Whilst good vs evil is, of course, a fundamental argument that can be understood by all, I don't think "Grey" should be taken as referring to a balance of light and dark, but rather, "Balance" should be taken as that in oneself.

"Balance" and knowledge of both sides of the Force is a concept not first introduced by the TFA novelisation (in Snoke referencing why Kylo is a great material to mold), but rather in ROTS:

Anakin: You know the dark side?!

Palpatine: Anakin, if one is to understand “the great mystery” one must study all it’s aspects, not just the dogmatic narrow view of the Jedi. If you wish to become a complete and wise leader, you must embrace a larger view of the force. Be careful of the Jedi, Anakin... only through me can you achieve a power greater than any Jedi! Learn to know the dark side of the force and you’ll be able to save your wife from certain death.

Sure, Palpatine is spinning some lies in to the mix, but there is some truth to what he says, both in canon and from a logical point of view. For example, in the real world, if I wanted a greater understanding of religion, I would not just study Christianity or Islam, but rather as many religions as I could to give me as great an understanding as I could of religion. Likewise, here, Palpatine highlights that the Jedi are stubborn in their teachings and are unwilling to change, and whilst he is attempting to draw Anakin to the Dark Side, he admits that a larger view of the Force is required to understand it and become "complete" and "wise".

Compare this to the words we hear in TLJ teaser, and they're not all that different:

Luke: Now, reach out; what do you see?

    Rey: Light. Darkness. The Balance.

    Luke: It's so much bigger.

Whatever Luke has been reading and seeking out between ROTJ and TLJ has, obviously, shifted his stance on the Force. What's most interesting, I think, to note, is that he says "reach out", whereas many Jedi and Sith instead reach in and choose I better themselves by having a greater understanding of themselves, and that the Force is "so much bigger" than simply Light, Darkness, or Balance.

Palpatine is simply trying to make the unthinkable seem paletable.

Kenobi tells Luke to each out with his feelings.

The Jedi have knowledge of the dark side, they just don't use it as it causes great suffering and they need to maintain the balance between light and dark - not allow evil to take over.

Oh sure, I'm aware, though I would argue that knowledge of the Dark Side is not the same as having studied - and having an understanding - of the Dark Side. Actually, considering the Prophecy of the Chosen One, I think it's pretty clear that the role of the Jedi is not to maintain balance between Dark and Light, but rather - as stated as Leia's hopes for Luke's return in TFA and by Kenobi - but rather to maintain peace and justice in the galaxy.
