Again if she's not a Skywalker, LF could have easily said she's not a Skywalker and could have ended this speculation instead of stringing the fans along, and for what?
To keep people in suspense only to get disappointed in the end? It's a cheap publicity stunt.

Again, it wasn't a timeless prophecy. It was a prediction about one moment in time. The larger prophecy was that there would be dark times and a chosen one would bring balance. It makes no claim about how that happens or how long it remains.

Clearly though the hope would be that balance would last longer and that a new Jedi Order would be better at maintaining it. However the shadow of Vader and Sidious' Empire remained and with only one Jedi, who is in exile, the balance couldn't be maintained.

How much of that was LFL and how much was it the fans making? But to be frank, you want to create these questions so people keep talking about it. Even if they said she wasn't a Skywalker, people would still talk about it and think she was or could still be!

This is not a satisfying answer to me. A balance that could switch so easily is not a balance.

There are really only two legitimate reasons not to reveal her last name - either the audience will recognize it and they are saving that reveal, or she doesn't know it.

I could never accept that she had no last name because her absent family is unimportant - her identity and motivations in TFA are built around that missing family. She wouldn't spend a decade of her life awaiting their return if they didn't matter.

If she doesn't know her name, there better be a good reason why. We see from her Force-back that she was easily old enough to have learned her last name when she was abandoned, so it would make sense that she would remember it. Names are pretty important to all kids - but it would be even more so for a little girl whose name is all she has left of her family.

But beyond that, why do it from a narrative perspective? They absolutely knew that not giving her a name would cause the audience to speculate about her identity, so whatever in-story reason they have for leaving her unnamed needs to have a purpose, otherwise they are just jerking us around.

By definition that's what a balance is. And if it were not the case, there would be no reason for a sequel trilogy at all.

Because there is a very good in-story reason that Finn has no last name.

I agree. If there isn't a good narrative reason it will be a cheap trick.

No - we are not given any explanation at all for why Rey has no last name.

Finn straight out says that FN-2187 is the only name he was ever given.

I gave a coherent one on the fact that she didn't even had a face at the start of TFA.

All the opening scene is a birth. Or a rebirth. She's the light besides the mask.

But people never refer to what it is on screen, they just refer to everything else.

Imo that's all on LFL. They went out of their way to insinuate that she's Skywalker from every angle, from Daisy's resemblance, Rey's look, her talents, the little background we do know etc etc. And they know that's the top thing that people talk about and want to know. Again if there is no relation it could have been addressed instead of stringing the fans along.
And it's not something they need to do to garner interest. This is Star Wars not some independent film. Just the Star Wars name alone guarantees interest and demand. If she's random than it was just bad cheap publicity stunt.

Let's assume that the symbolism you're referring to is intentional, and that your interpretation is correct - that still has nothing to do with why her last name is not revealed.

Even if you go way out there, and conclude that Rey is the literal rebirth of the Light Side of the Force, she still had a human family at some point before she was abandoned, so she would still have a last name.

I appreciate that you want to share what you're reading into that moment, but this is not a Darren Aronofsky movie where the subtext and symbolism are as significant (if not moreso) than the plot. This is a Star Wars movie - the symbolism is a tool to support narrative concepts, not to replace them.

You're like me on this and like everyone there, we just don't know where Disney wants to go.

Nobody knows except a dozen of executives. There might be something bigger than a last name reveal that would shock the world. Just my guess. And this is why I never quitted thinking there was something more that I actually found this.

Besides that, the whole TFA plot is about memories lost, so it's absolutely logical that Rey has yet no name because she just recovered her memory after the StarKiller fight. That's the very point of TFA. Bringing back memory and breathe.

I absolutely can't imagine one second that you're a professionnal director and putting these kind of symbols all along during 2h12 by pure luck or coincidence. Especially if the core of the plot is already the major character of this saga aka Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader.

But I find very surprising that people don't notice a non stop 2h12 sequence of symbols when they love to argue about 10 seconds details.

And the trailer is again on that symbolism. All along.

    Talking about symbilism...
In TLJ trailer when we see the schelf with the books a RAY of LIGHT is on them.
I suspect that the connection Rey/Ray of Light is part of the riddle.

    Another day, another theory.

In some of the last posts on this thread, there is talk about birth/ rebirth.

This reminded me of a rumour, before Episode 3 was released.
I can't find a link right now, will add it once I've found it, but here goes:

During production of Episode 3, there was a rumour that at the moment Anakin became Darth Vader, every child conceived after that moment
    wasn't Force sensitive anymore.
In other words, Anakin - the chosen one - tipped the metaphorical meter so far into Dark Side territory, the Force took years to recover from that.
And even though Vader & Palpatine were killed during the Battle of Endor, it took some years to fully eradicate the Empire.

So what if Rey is the first Force sensitive child born after that moment?

Yes, Ben is older than Rey, but we know from the novels there's a shroud of conflict around him. Because e is the grandson of Anakin,
there could be some remnants from him there. If this is true, then this also is the case in Luke/ Leia.
So Rey is the first child born without any connection to previous Force sensitive bengs.
This would mean she is not related to any established character.

    Some other pointers:

    - Luke & Leia, although born after Anakin becoming Darth Vader, were already conceived.
    - We know Luke trained a new generation of Jedi. We don't know if there were any children besides Ben present.
If there were, this theory doesn't hold up, unless they were younger (or much older) than Rey.
    - Kylo Ren (in the novelization) says to Rey: "It is you". Perhaps he recognizes the first Force sensitive child in her?
In TFA the Force awakens in Rey during that battle, perhaps Kylo learned of a prophecy like this

    Theory-shred away !!

Its the era of viral marketing and social media buzz. It might be cheap but its worth billions in fan pushed interest. Also given the EU it was inevitable.

In Hinduism there is a cycle of birth redemption death and it repeates.

Anakin was the destroyer. Luke the Redeemer. Rey is rebirth.

    Huh?

No regardless of anyone's interpretation the creator of the saga said he was the Chosen one, said he balanced the force. I don't think that's up for debate unless they wish to retcon not minor issues but the entire series.

My point is that even in systems that repeat like cycles of birth destruction redemption. Which can take eons to resolve things still come back around.

So he restored the balance that went unbalanced and then Rey and Kylo will rebalance this ?

    ...

    That wasn't balanced then.

So if winter returns there never was a summer?

I point to the Hindu cycle because figures like Krishna have come and gone many times each in different movements of the cycle.

Also if you deny Anakin as the balance that really is an issue you have with Lucas.
