That would mean Kylo wasn't lying. Her parents were just scum, spawn of Palpatine who just left her there on Jakku.

i think going straight to the cave was a sign of her being desperate for answers and lost in what she perceived as a scary, confusing spot in her life. this helps Luke to understand that, just because someone is tempted doesn't mean they'll make the wrong decision. i felt it was more about Luke and reflecting on his mistakes rather than Rey being some premature darksider.

As someone who felt after VIII that although she isn't a Skywalker, didn't mean she couldn't have parents that were somebodies. I like your synopsis and and am back in the undecided department. Her adoptive parents could have been who Kylo saw as drunkards buried on Jakku somewhere. There is that moment where Luke goes, who are you, really who are you, why did they send you...

 

The bigger question is why would Kylo Ren know?
It's like someone went on the street, got beat up, had amnesia, then got transport to hospital.
Doctor: Can you tell me who you are?
Beat up amnesia girl: Can't remember.
Doctor: Well there is a bystander:
Beat up girl: Hey bystander, who am I, where to I live?
Bystander: I know, your name is Gullible A. Person. You live at Gullible Bay Apartment 99.
Beat up girl: I believe you.

 

My take on it kind of builds off the theory that Kylo was lying to her. I'm under the impression that Kylo doesn't fully know who her parents are, he just knows she isn't anyone special. The whole part about being sold off for drinking money/parents dead in a paupers grave was probably just said to get under her skin. The scene is more about making Rey remind herself who they are instead of telling her who they are. Her reaction is more important than what he says.

then he knew because she knows.

it's all in the conversation in the elevator.

"I saw something too. I know that when the time comes, you'll be the one to turn. You'll stand with me, Rey. I saw who your parents are."

he saw what she already knows, which is why she doesn't even ask him or get excited in that moment.
instead she backs away. because she's always known the truth.

 

Ehhhh... that's a stretch. Maybe she's says nothing because they want to add that twist to IX. It may very well be that she thinks her parents are nobodies. Doesn't mean they are.

 

This would be a bad twist though. What would be the point? It wouldn't change Rey's world at all. Like Rian said: the hardest thing for Rey is to accept her parents are gone and unimportant for her journey. Please don't change that by adding a twist and making her a Skywalker, Kenobi or whatever. This is the story of a nobody who rises to become somebody.

 

Maybe I missed something, but when did Rey see the parents thing? All I remember was the vaguely "Divergent" mirrors scene.

 

The Dark Side mirror doesn't show her anything but herself really, which I assume is to tell us she herself has endless possibilities of what she'll become...? (Yeah, it was trippy. )

I don't think she ever saw her parents per se in TLJ. Ben says, "Do you want to know the truth about your parents? Or have you always known? You've just hidden it away. Say it." And then Rey says, "They were nobodies," so the implication is that she has indeed just hidden the truth about what happened with her parents away and been in denial about it for years. Ben didn't have to tell her a thing.

Cheerful denial seems to have been her MO ever since she was a child.

 

He knows because she knows. Their minds are bridged so he knows the answer because she knows the answer.

I don't really see the point of the next film revisiting this question. After The Last Jedi the story needs to go forwards and not look back.

 

Well. . . If Snoke was manipulating their interactions whose to say he didn’t manipulate what Ren and Rey “know” about her parentage?
