As with some others, I don't know that giving any character God-like powers leaves a lot of options for conflict and drama, but if there is going to be anyone with this kind of powers and abilities, it should be Luke. If they can show Luke with this kind of advancement and still keep that conflict alive (and still give the new heroes their fair share, too), then yes, I am all in-favor of seeing it happen. The chance to see what Anakin might have been, realized in his son? Sign me up.

But much of this depends on how the story is being shaped, so a lot of it is still an unknown.

What I can say with absolute certainty is that there is no single thing about TFA which I am more excited about / intrigued by than the character of Luke Skywalker; catching up with him and seeing how he has grown and developed over these past three-plus decades.

I've been waiting since 1983 to see him on the big screen again! (duel)

Luke is a powerful Jedi because he is strong in the Force. Throughout the OT everyone recognizes it Obi Wan, Yoda, Vader, and Palpitine. It would make sense that over the past 30 years he has become more powerful as he has been meditating and becoming one with the Force. I don't think that needs to be developed during TFA. I don't think he will be "God-like" and I don't want to see Star Destroyers pulled down or other type massive force use. I would rather see him very wise and only display his power when pushed to by the villain.

I like and agree with some of the points in the first post.
I could see Skywalker being a "grey Jedi" where he feels it necessary to level off the power of the force or be able to moderate it.
I can also see Luke starting a new Jedi Order with new younger force sensative patawans that will be in Luke's image.
It makes sense that Skywalker would want to avoid the politics & war too. I think Luke will back away from Jedi being used as samurai or sheriffs/marshals & more like monks or yogi.
I think TFA will have more force scenes or more force sensative characters but it will be like the OT in how it's used.

I want to see Luke raise someone from the dead at the end of TFA. Maybe Han or Finn -- though it would be tricky if they both died in the same location. This would be so awesome.... Kylo encounters Luke in the snowy forest ("I've been waiting for this day for a long time," he says). He expects Luke to take out his saber and duel, but instead Luke goes over to one of the dead bodies. Kylo taunts Luke that it's too late, that the person is dead. But to his amazement, Han or Finn is resurrected. Kylo's jaw drops, he stands speechless for a moment, and then heads for the hills.

This would be so awesome: Luke is the one to master life and death, not Vader, Sidious, or Plagueis.

Remember Jafar from Alladin how powerful he wanted to be and it actually was his weakness? Well that is not Luke.

I think Luke will be similar to Yoda in ways. But more patient

Except Luke wasn't a grey Jedi. He was the purest of the pure. He was so reckless of a light side idealist that he turned himself over to his father and then cast aside his weapon to face the emperor. The black shirt opened and low and behold it was white. Even the example of Qui-Gon as "grey" is off. Qui-Gon was more concerned with the will of the force than the council. That is hardly morally compromised or flirting with the dark side. Lastly never anywhere at all in cannon is there a grey side to the force. There is the light and the dark. Just like there is no grey to actual morality. What people describe as grey is people who do something morally wrong to accomplish a positive end, but their actions despite being opposed to evil are immoral. The whole concept of grey force users are an invention of the EU to tell stories outside of the simple morality of the trilogies.

Well luke has been missing for some years maybe 10.
Now what if Luke have died and when "Maze" in the trailer tells "that the force is calling you" then it's really Luke. Maybe Luke is like the force Specters in the Yoda arc and that Rey/Finn have to travel and meet Luke at a remote World.
Please remember "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you could possibly imagine"

I dont think he is the most powerful ever but should be most powerful and wise force user that still exist. He should be mentally strong after resisting to turn to the dark side.

I don't want him to be any more powerful than Yoda. Yoda had 900 years or whatever to get that good, in my opinion it would be lame and cartoony if Luke surpasses him with only 30 years of experience.

Why should he be god like? Yoda had 900 of force use in his resume and it didn't help , there where 10.000 Jedi in their prime and most of them were killed by a handfull of clones. Obi Wan was close to loose against non force users. The Jedi only a a little bit of an advantage nothing god like. God like is where the audience looses contact to a character remember how people loved Neo in the Matrix sequels? no? me neither.

according to the TPM novel yes.
Even with the Clone Wars we have seen nothing of a galaxy wide war going on.

Yes 10k Jedi from many thousands of planets. Its a big galaxies with zillions of people.

Lucas said something like this most recently Kannan keeps mentioning there used to be 10,000 Jedi.

That is absolutely hideous! 10,000 Jedi?! I can now 100% confirm that Lucas lost his mind in the eighties.

Its still a minor fraction of the population. You need to consider that the more crazy idea that the republic and the sepratists were unified political blocks of multiple thousands of planets. I mean the largest treaty organizations on earth NATO and the Warsaw Pact never had more than 30 (wild guess) if I remember and less when they were actively worrying about war.

Also the idea of the PT era was the pinnacle height reached.

The way I measure my expectations for this, and other questions, is by keeping it simple. I think we are often all guilty of over thinking in our speculation. If we look at the huge progression Luke made in just a few years during the OT, then ignore a curve in either direction, add 30 years, and take into account the fact that he did essentially defeat Vader and the Emperor, then I think we end up with a Luke that is a little more powerful than Yoda. The one Jedi in cannon (correct me if I'm wrong) that was able to defeat the Sith. I'm quite certain Kylo Ren doesn't stand a chance against Luke. I'm sure Snoke will be another story ("Obi-Wan never told you about your Grandfather....no...I am your Grandfather").JK.
Great post by the OP, and great discussion.

Wasn't Lucas after all who said that Luke is the most powerful jedi?
