Because its a stand alone story that takes place in the established universe where the broad narrative is already written.

Snoke and the knights of Ren are part of a new open ended storyline and their characters were left ambiguous on purpose. That narrative is still being told. To include them in a stand alone rebel hiest story that takes place 35 years earlier that has absoluty nothing to do with the new trilogy would make no sense.

Not to mention we've already been told this movie isn't about sith and Jedi.

The logic in these boards is frightning.

Does this movie have to be about Jedi and Sith for Jedi and Sith to be in it? No, because you already established that RO takes place in an established universe, and, chronilogically speaking, Snoke and the Nights of Ren are already established sometime in the past, the only question is how far back and how they originated. You are also assuming that Snoke is not involved in this stand alone story, the same way Vader and Tarkin are likely to be involved.

How is it that RO has nothing to do with TFA? It has everything to do with it. Everything that comes after is related to everything that comes before it. You're telling me that the events of RO don't effect what happens in TFA? If the rebels never successfully capture the death star plans then it is more likely the rebels lose, then there is no resistance or first order and the events of TFA don't happen.

You guys are taking "stand alone" just a little too literal. Yes, it is a stand alone narrative, in a universe of narritives where many different characters, ideas, and locations are interconnected.

Unless Snoke is connected to the Death Star, I can't see him appearing in Rogue One. Snoke isn't the Empire's ruler, Sheev is.

That's the thing though, we don't know who Snoke is, and he has enough influence to rule over the first order as supreme leader. So the question is WHY?

My perception on SW StandAlone movies goes alot with the perception of @Darth Arthritus and i do believe he is right.

SW StanAlone movies will tell stories outside the SW main story, the Skywalker Saga, with new or diferent characters but everything will have to be connected with the other main movies/stories in order to keep it all familiar and recognizable. For instance, R1 portrais the story of a group of rebels facing the empire, and we will need to have regular Rebellion references, Mon Mothma , Ackbar or even Leia, and the Emperial references like the Emperor, Darth Vader and Tarkin. I would even say that if a character becames to good in a Stanalone movie he will definitly make his way into the main stream of the SW saga, i don't believe there ever will be sequels to standalone movies because they are side projects but the story is strong enough i'm sure Disney will not let the chance to cash in on it and would probably produce a TV Show after that succefull story. But the main thing is that all SW characters and rumours could appear in the Standalone movies, mainly delivering Cameos or supporting roles but they will be there because the fans want to see a Star Wars Movie and SW Movies have SW Characters.

On the spot we're all wandering now, what's the relation of Rogue One with the new Trilogy??
    - I believe Snoke should be in the movie because they need to give him some context, an ancient guy with ties to the Empire or the Sith that haven't been around in any SW movie? A cameo from Snoke would delight every single SW Fan. On the same note, i've heard that Knights of Ren should also appear on R1 but that to me is just a little bit far out because the KoR seem to be a new thing in TFA a post-Empire cult.

Off course, Sheev is putting his plan to dissolve the senate at this time, if Snoke is involved with R1 I would like him to some members of the crew, but what?

The tweet says 'there is no attempt being made to carry characters (from the standalone films) in and out of the saga episodes.' It doesn't say anything about the saga characters appearing in the standalones.

Just think about it. In Rogue One there'll be Vader, Mon Mothma and other OT background characters, I would presume. Obviously in Han Solo, there'll be Han, Chewie, likely Lando and Jabba the Hutt. So it's not a stretch to imagine Snoke being in Rogue One.

It makes sense from a story perspective. It feels a little odd that this powerful Supreme Leader could appear from nowhere, but putting him in this film would help flesh out his backstory and history. He's not just a villain to replace Palpatine, he becomes a developed character.

I also really like the theory that Snoke is the bacta tank. It feels like something the Emperor would do; imprison his old master and barely sustain him, mocking him, using his knowledge of the Force for his own means - It's so evil! And when the Emperor dies, it would make sense that the Empire might choose to release him, and allow him to be their new leader...

Even if Snoke isn't Palpatine's old master, he could still be an ancient dark side user that he's found and trapped. Lots of possibilities.

The rule of two only aplies to the Sith teachings and not to Dark Side users as a whole. As we have seen in Rebels, Sheev has many Force wielding Dark Side users and in CW he was also well aware of Mother Talzin and the Nightsisters. Old man Palps could have 20 to 30 Dark Jedi for all he cared and as long as they didn't dwell in Sith lore and wanted to become a Sith, they were no menace to the rule of two.

Snoke played by Mads Mikkelsen in the bacta tank?
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 19, 2016, Original Post Date: Apr 19, 2016 ---
Snoke played by Mads Mikkelsen in the bacta tank?

Mikkelsen didn't seem to be anywhere else in the trailer. Big reveal character not in the trailers (just like Snoke in TFA)

I also imagine he could look like Snoke pre beatings.
    Something about his mouth/chin.

I think this is being misinterpreted. What this means, to me, is that we will not have episode VII then a stand alone movie which has events and or character that must happen for VIII to make sense, then do episode VIII. They won't go in and out of the sequel trilogy like that. Its not that Han would never appear in a stand alone movie, or that vader would never appear, its that you won't see them jump around. For example, the first Avengers movie, if I remember right, involved characters and events set up in the first Thor movie. you didn't need to see Thor to like Avengers, but it made a hell of a lot more sense.

I also take this to mean that the films will take place like Rebels, during the period of times between III and IV and VI and VII and before 1, and perhaps after IX. The comics can take place between those other films and do, but the movies will not do that.

Fairly safe then to say that major characters in Rebels never appear in anything other than Rebels, or Rebels spin offs.

Well, no. Palpatine had one apprentice at time. When he gets back to Maul, he told him that there can't be more than 2 and he had other purposes for him. You're no longer my apprentice. He had Maul, Dooku and Vader. No more, no less.

Agreed...the rule of two is also relative in the sense that if you don't train under official/sith teachings then you're not a sith by any means but you are trained up in case to fall in line with the sith althgough i'm not sure if secret apprentices count.

I have to disagree. A Sith Lord doesn't teach another aprentice the ways of the Sith until his first aprentice is destroyed. The only reason why Sheev tought Dooku the ways of the Sith was because he thought Darth Maul was dead. You have to remember that there is a differance between being a Sith and being a Dark Side Force user. You don't mearly have others in line just in case the first fails because this has to do with the fact of how powerful said individual is in the Force. I mean, think about it, why would the Emperor continue using Vader who was so damaged if he could have easily trained any of his other inquisitors to be his Sith aprentice? Vader could never use some of the Sith teachings as the Force Lightning but any of the other Inquisitors could. Why then keep a broken husk of a man and not teach one of the others who are in line if not for the sole reason that Vader was way more powerful in the Force than they were even with his limitations? Only a master and an aprentice, nothing more. One who has power and one who craves it. After Vader, Maul was no longer considered a Sith and had no further teachings of this kind from Palps. He was just a disposable tool to be used and discarded at Sheev's whim wich was the main reason why Maul rebeled.
