I don't think so, but in the moment I totally thought she could be. I wouldn't be surprised if Rey turned out to be pregnant though.

Palpatine didn't create Anakin. Martin has this argument with people almost daily, he's stated more than once the comic is just showing Anakin's deepest fears. He is afraid Palpatine created him, it's not confirming he ever did.

The Story Group exists to ensure every piece of Star Wars media, be it the comics, novels, films, TV shows don't contradict each other, and adhere to the laws of the universe. They do not create the stories whatsoever.

On topic though: who on Earth came up with this crackpot theory? :D

The story group seemed to not give a rip about Palpatine's motives in the Aftermath series.

Canon facts overrule non-Canon interpretations, and so this viewpoint is rendered inaccurate by what the current Canon states, which is that Palpatine did not have and could not have had any involvement in Anakin's creation because the things he told Anakin in Revenge of the Sith at the Mon Cala opera were lies.

Sorry, I guess I'm out of the loop. What's the canon source for that?

Revenge of the Sith itself, specifically this line of dialogue: "To cheat death is a power only one has achieved, but if we work together I know we can discover the secret."

So, your canonical source is that he’s lying in one scene . . . but telling the truth in the other? Couldn’t I just make the same argument in reverse? Pretty sure that doesn’t count as “canon fact” and is instead your own “non-canon interpretation” ;)

No, because the Story Group's statements and subsequent Canon stories - including The Rise of Skywalker itself - make it clear that Palpatine lied to Anakin in the Opera House in order to convince him to turn.

"Canon" is largely a fan concept, it's also mutable and transient, it's a lousy basis for "argument" for the "validity" of a creative idea. Creative ideas in Star Wars will be adopted and used, regardless of the canon before it. We know this is as Star Wars fans, better than any other fan group. We have had the most transient "canon" of any mega-brand I can think of.

If Shmi had a "virgin" birth, then so can Rey. Period. If that's what the next writer/director wants, they will get it. Nobody is going to point to a dialog from a previous film and say, "sorry this violates our canon". Creative process doesn't work that way, particularly when the stakes are so high.

Star Wars is not an encyclopedia, or a data dictionary or an object model with definitive rules, methodologies and patterns. It cannot be judged that way, as much as we fans sometimes love to analyze it that way.

Whatever happens beyond the timeline after Star Wars IX, I wager it focuses on other characters besides Rey. Her story is largely over.

Janna's origin, the emergence of Finn's powers and other characters I think is the eventual plan.

That said, Favreau has gone on record as saying he likes the +5 years post-ROTJ as his favorite "era" to work in and given Favreau's massive success and Lucasfilm's recent history of jumping on any director that's "HOT" and giving them more money/projects to work on, I think we'll see a very LARGE focus on what happened after ROTJ and far, far less about what happens after TROS.

Let me ask the thread this:

If de-aging Mark Hamill could look as good as the de-aging on the recent Scorcese film on Netflix, would bringing Luke into a cameo for the +5 ROTJ timeline interest you?

Personally, I would be extatic if they did this, gave us a movie/TV show with young Luke filling in some blanks post-RotJ story :-D Furthermore, I would be fine with Hamill lending voice and likeness to a young body double, too :)

Canon is not a "fandom construct" because fandom can neither create it nor influence it.

What is and isn't Canon is important, ultimately, only to the individuals responsible for creating content for a given property or universe because it impacts what stories they can tell by establishing what is and is not possible within the narrative confines of a given property's established universe.

Fandom has two choices when it comes to Canon: acceptance or rejection.

However, the choice by a fandom - or parts of a fandom - to reject Canon has no effect on the Canon itself because what is recognized and established as Canon remains Canon even if a fandom or parts of a fandom rejects it.

Jeez, it’s perfectly acceptable for your answer to be ‘no, I don’t have a canon source for this.’ I’m not aiming for a gotcha here. I’m just not personally aware of any specific instance in any released material that explicitly debunks Palpatine’s claim. Please educate me. “Story group’s statements” and “canon stories” isn’t particularly helpful.

Back to the thread: @Bandini made a fair point - what’s the difference between this and what happened with Shmi? My answer: Nothing. To me, it’s the same. And it was just as gross and wrong back in 1999 as it is now.

The pseudo non-revelation that Palpatine (the super villain of this series) >*maybe*< was responsible feels better to me, because violating a woman’s ownership and choice over her body is a wildly sinister premise to start with. As @Pastor Barndog already mentioned, having this newly redeemed Ben character then do that would be incredibly troubling and problematic. I can’t imagine Disney would want any part of that action.

Well, if every sith becomes his master then he knows.

I guess this is the point of the rule of two as described in the last movie which is clever because at one point or another they would have noticed that they are killed by their apprentice almost everytime.

Reminder to please keep the discussion of this topic clean. If it sounds "TMI" that probably means it isn't appropriate.

No, that scene in particular, the story group comments, and TROS do not "reveal" that Palpatine lied.
    • Palpatine twists the truth, he never lies. He stated that his master taught him everything he knew, not that Plagueis knew exactly how it worked. For all we know Plagueis' experiments had a high failure rate, and it was merely by chance he managed to save someone.
    • The story group says there is no direct connection, that it is not confirmed by the comic. As of right now, he didn't create him.
If anything TROS reveals that Palpatine didn't lie in the opera house scene, because he himself has cheated death. Not to mention the dyad has the ability to restore life to others, much like Plagueis once could.

While pregnancy is unlikely to happen, it's possible an echo of Ben's conciousness could remain inside Rey's head, or better yet... a force ghost/ human love story! ;)

I think what we witnessed was him doing what Anakin could not. Save the one he loves from dying. And hand placement stirred this up.
