Now that we’ve seen TFA, RO, and TLJ, does Rogue One stand out as their best to you? I think so, especially because of the grounded and gritty tone, but let me know what you think down below!

Rogue one is not just the best Disney Movie it is the only decent one for me. It is one of the few stories they have put out that feels like star wars.

It is the only movie with a working plot/structure. The only film with a consistent style, performances, art direction. It knows what type of movie it is and embraces it. The characters are great for this type of movie. The action scenes rival anything put to film is sci-fy/fantasy.

It also takes more risks and brave/bold decisions in story and characters than the other films.

I am probably biased but it is the only tent pole blockbuster film that has come out in a long time that I find re-watchable.

Purely as a film I would place it above TFA and TLJ.

But as a Star Wars film I'd have it just behind TFA and way ahead of TLJ. The reason for that is that TFA recaptured that Star Wars feeling I had as a kid,it had the return of our heroes from the OT, Rogue One continued that formula but sadly TLJ has slightly ruined it.

From those three, I'd say yes, but the movie was still completely unnecessary

Just signed up today. For me it does not take a lot to be "the best Disney Movie"

Yes, Rogue One is the best Disney SW film to date. TFA and TLJ are pure garbage.

It succeeds in some key areas where TFA and TLJ don't.

First of all, it takes itself seriously enough that the audience can take it seriously. Even though the OT had a lot of humor, there was a "weight" to everything that was taking place. R1 replicates that really well, in my opinion. I feel like JJ, with his stated commitment to fun first and story second, didn't really do that. And RJ really just, I don't know what the hell he did, but there were plenty of moments in TLJ where it didn't seem to really take itself seriously, combined with moments where it took itself too seriously. Example: Leia doing Superman pose is not taking things seriously enough. Not one character referencing that HUGE Leia development was taking things too seriously.

Second, the score added emotional weight. This is best exemplified by the scene in the OT when Han and Leia are losing each other on Bespin. In Rogue One, music adds an almost sacred quality to the scenes in the last twenty minutes or so. However, in the ST films, the cues are much more typical of blockbusters, with the music trying to tell you how you should feel, and the results are that I don't get nearly as emotional watching them.

Thirdly, the battle choreography makes sense! For the most part in TFA, JJ got this right. I think the whole "as long as there's light, we can win" thing was a bit on the nose. RJ completely screwed the pooch on this though in TLJ, and I will fight anyone who thinks that the Battle of Crait makes a lick of sense.

The one area where R1 "fails" in my opinion is in the SW "fun factor." TFA re-captured that exhilarating adventure feel perfectly, for all the legit complaints one can make about it. R1 didn't really try to, and while the space battle at the end does tap into it, for the most part it didn't need to. TLJ, for me at least, needed that feeling and only very rarely captured it.

What is your criteria for "necessary"?

"necessary" meaning that it is okay for there to be SOME mystery to some backstories to the saga and the characters, and it worked just fine before R1, and these characters didnt really do much to push the story forward as nothing changed...meaning it was not necessary...remove the "Star wars" elements and its a pretty simply war movie.

It’s my favorite. I know a lot of people love the ST so I don’t want to harp on it too much, but just in my opinion, R1 is just “right” in a way that TFA and TLJ feel wrong.

For me, the movie enhanced ANH to a pretty serious degree by providing a look into that Rebel victory mentioned in the first ever SW crawl. Now that I know all about the sacrifices that were made, I can appreciate the weight of everything in ANH that much more!

But I appreciate your clarification. TFA and TLJ definitely "push the story forward" in ways that R1 didn't/couldn't.

    Rogue one is fantastic.

In a nut shell (IMO) the film fits inside the universe well, fleshing out things fans always wanted to know, try’s new things with film technologies (Tarkin, Leia and digitally importing red and gold leader) and services the fans with fantastic nods.

For me, the character performances are really strong. Krennic and Jyn are my personal highlights, in fact out of the new three films, Jyns hologram scene and Vader end scene are up there in the best moments of SW (of course, battle of Scarif <3).

TFA and TLJ really have not done it for me, I don’t care for the characters, which is worrying since they’ve had 2 films to develop them. Poe is probably the only character who I actually like.

Gareth Edwards has done a fantastic job, and set the Anthology standards very high, judging by the way the “main” films are going I’d bank that I will prefer the anthology films and potentially ignore ep 7,8,9.

Definitely, and one reason is because it looks new in terms of the story line compared to the other films of the new trilogy.
