I hope Rogue One was not intended to be dreary. But yet that's kind of how I feel about it.

The best way to show the cost of war is to show the value of the lives that were spent. The best way to show the value of those lives is present them to the audience in a way that attaches us to them. We don't have to like them, but we have to believe that they're "real". If the characters don't feel real, then we perceive the war as having no actual cost.

Clearly many people loved Rogue One so I'm in the minority on this. But Rogue One had the potential to be great and just lacked the heart for me. I'll try to watch it a third time with an open mind though.

Rogue One is my least favorite. The second half is great but the first half bored me. Also Casian and Jiin are emotionless and boring. This movie has a unique tone but lacks imagination

I personally think Rogue one is okay but it's not the best. I mean it doesn't have any lightsaber duels and it's good backstory and all but in my opinion the entire movie didn't truly need to be made. Besides all that it's pretty good film, just not disneys best.

Very Very close.....I have R1 slightly higher than TLJ.....cannot fathom those above who say R1 is emotionless or Cassian/Jyn are emotionless and boring. Not sure I watched the same movie.

    Let's review some "emotionless" scenes...

    1. Jyn sees/hears her father for the first time in many many years in a hologram. He thinks she will be mad at him, for leaving her with Saw Gerrera....she breaks down as she understands fully why he did that and his secret fierce dedication to the rebellion as he lives a lie for years, and places the flaw in the Death Star then risks death to pass the message about the flaw to the rebels. She breaks down sobbing....yes so emotionless and boring.

    2. Jyn at the rebel council on Yavin 4 begging, pleading the rebels to launch an attack on Scarif to get the Death Star plans. Her impassioned pleas fall on deaf ears and the Rebel council cannot come to agreement. Yes again so emotionless and boring.

    3. Onboard the imperial shuttle going to Scarif....Jyn realizes the need to give the hardened rebel troopers a reason for the incredibly difficult mission to come, she speaks from the heart and shows her dedication to the rebellion...at that point she had come so far from the surly loner at the beginning of the movie, to become quite the leader herself. Yes, again, so emotionless and boring.

I guess I just watched a different movie. Rogue One is incredible!

    Well.

I've seen Ep 1-6 so many times I've lost count.

I can count how many times I've seen TFA on one hand, but two hands wouldn't be enough for Rogue One. And TLJ, well, let's say I'd rather not go there again!

For me, it is definitely the best of the new SW.

I'm in a similar position to @Boss Vos up there... I couldn't accurately tell you how many times I've seen 1-6. I'd need 3 hands for R1. I've watched TFA 10 times (and I only fell asleep twice) because I was really trying to change my impression of it and embrace the film and story. TLJ I've seen twice and it wouldn't bother me to never see it again.

No, I have it as a little better than the Force Awakens but measurably behind Last Jedi.

    Empire Strikes Back
    Last Jedi
    Star Wars
    Return of the Jedi

    Rogue One

    Force Awakens

    Attack of the Clones

    Revenge of the Sith

    Phantom Menace

When i first saw Rogue one I liked it, but part of me was a little disappointed that we didn't get the full on 'War Movie' we were promised. After getting over that slight disappointment though i've really grown to love this film. Cassian Andor is now easily in my top 10 favourite Star Wars character ever and K-2SO is defiantly my favourite droid character. I love what they did with Tarkin, I really like Krennic, the worlds are beautifully designed and feel lived in, and the plot is to the point well constructed. And yes it has the awesome Vader scene but that feels like icing on the cake and when cake itself is pretty spectactular.

Their are a few issues(like with any film) for me the death scenes at the end fall a bit flat and cheesy, especially Cassians and Jyn's( i mean the the Death star shoots miles away from the base so they get the chance to climb down the tower and go and have a vaguely romantic death on the beach, instead of running to find a ship) Also the Bor Gullet thing was a bit naff and pointless, im guessing this was to do with the reshoots. The Leia CGI also wasn't a patch on Tarkin and i could of done without the Ponda Baba & Dr. Cornelius Evazan cameos. But im nit picking and every film has issues.

So while i like Force Awakens, Rogue One for me is defiantly my favourite of the Disney Star Wars Films.

lol...probably not on my best day.

The prequels have recently shifted in my mind because Sith is melting down a bit. Why after 13 years or whatever I'm not sure but the verisimilitude is waning to the point of AOTC rising above it in my estimation.

Glad to see I'm not alone in my general processing of Star Wars movies though!

I have liked all of Disney’s films so far, but for me TFA takes the cake with Solo just behind.

It's not my favorite film, but it is my favorite Disney SW film.

R1's last battle was enjoyable and fun to watch. It also made me realize I'd watch a Darth Vader slasher film. Most of all, I liked that they had the guts to kill everyone when they could have easily set it up to be a sequel. One of my biggest pet peeves with TLJ is that they didn't kill Finn or Rose at the end.

I'd have to say yes. In successfully brings in new characters, works as a continuation, while telling us a whole new story that is exciting and fun, however tragic.

    Definitely.
It has style, good characters and fantastic battles. It even has connection to the prequels. It takes itself seriously, without dumb humor. It also has great CGI - finally at least one movie that tries to be modern and continue Lucas's tradition of pushing the envelope.

Rogue One is the Disney Star Wars film that I've watched the most. But I neither love it or hate it. Its not brilliant film, but its not awful either.

Mostly, its quite a slow film at the start and overdoes the nostalgic cameo stuff to an irritating degree because their appearances feel out of place and forced, seemingly done for personal pleasure and thrills of the director.

Rogue One actually feels more like a fan film than a real Star Wars film at times because the pacing and direction of the story assume you already know about stuff and events in this time period. There are no explanantions or expositions given to the characters, groups or events.

As it has no introduction crawl, I think it could be quite a confusing and boring film for someone who is unfamiliar with Star Wars and doesn't know about the backstory and the future story in the OT.

This bothered me at first but then I realized that the death star aimed (with apparent pin-point accuracy) at the communication satellite, which completely makes sense.

Rogue One has now dropped to third on my list of Disney Star Wars films.

TFA is 1st, SOLO in 2nd just ahead of R1 in 3rd, with TLJ still rock bottom.

That's what I thought at first, but it actually blasts that satellite dish into oblivion (basically vaporizing the top of that tower in the process) and the side effect of that is that the landing point for the blast is a ways out at sea, due to the angle.
