This will be tough thread, but I have taken curriage to open this , whatever its destiny be, since this is what bothers me for long time.

I am impressed by the fact (in my eyes) how this sequel trilogy is a one big ode to disfunctional families,or non-existent ones, of lost childhoods. In general I see it as an elaborate critic of the, (obviously from perspective of the authours of the trilogy), the single worst and most dangerous thing in the Universe, which happens to be,not Snoke, not the Dark side, but the classic family.

As a family man I am sad to see this things finally surfacing as coherent polithics of the story group as this franchise is developing.

Though this personal (family) tragedies are of course atractive story-wise, as any horror and drama are such , and seen as attraction for the public, behind all of this I find clues such that they are introducing general message that classic family is outdated, bad and unncessary ,and even harmfull institution.
Just reading latest family marvel, one from Solo novel that Ben Solo has been almost incinerated by their house droid as a 2 years old child by someone evil who wanted to kil the little boy, which can hardly happen if parents were near him. In fact in real world child left alone like this is considered neglection.

It seems that galaxy in the sequel trilogy is a one childhood horror.Just remember childhoods of Ben Solo, Rey, but observe also sisters Rose and Tico story in novel, a slaves, and also those kids on Cantonica including Broomboi, who are also slaves without family.Finn again a hero that did not had family.

Rey's parents have abandoned her. They were possibly a child abuse drunkards. In any way Rey had no childhood because of her familly properties which were horrible.
Kylo/Ben shares same destiny. He was ostracized by parents (in his belief), and Han and Leia are in fact portrayed as terrible selfish, shorthsighted parents both in the film and in the canon novels .

Perhaps the is best seen in the case of Luke Skywalker.
Luke, a Kylo's uncle, also participated in torture of insecure Kylo that made him who he is.
In the original trilogy Luke was family savior, family glue,he saved his father by firmly believing in his light side, that there is good in him. In sequel Luke has been overturned into someone who does not see potential for good in his own teenage nephew any by this, as all relatives in this trilogy must do, hurts young Ben and makes him fall on the dark side, destroying his own family.
In such setting though, what Has Ben Solo became is actually expectable.

I must be honest as a family man, that came from strong classic family, and am formed my own big familly, that something in here does not sound good to me, and I would like to hear opinion of other people.

For the end I would like to remind us that Star Wars films have high impact on culture and socilogy in general, and that mostly the young gnerations feel the impact of the messages in this films.

    What do you think?

    no.

Han and Leia made mistakes as all parents do.
    Luke also made a mistake.
unfortunately in the world of Star Wars, these mistakes have insanely galactic consequences.

but the whole ST is about ratifying family: the desperate need for it, the support of it, how we create it where none exists and hold onto it even when it's broken.

the stories of Rey, Finn, Ben and to some extent Poe are all about finding their place and new family when their own is gone.
Han's whole arc has been about growing up, growing wise, and giving everything he had to his son.
and Luke came back to defend his sister (and his nephew) even though he knew he couldn't "fix" the problem that he accidentally helped create.

As opposed the classic family values of choking your 9 months pregnant wife? Threatening your son with death unless he decides to bow down to your Emperor?

Nah. If anything, it's the total opposite.

Now, I want to be clear that there's absolutely nothing wrong with non-traditional families. My mom died of cancer when I was really young, so I was raised by a single parent for a good chunk of my childhood, and I think I turned out okay (at least, I hope so!).

But I don't think this trilogy is necessarily celebrating these subversions of the typical nuclear family, at least not in the lens that they themselves are subversions. In fact, in many cases, it's to add conflict and drama. It's to give the story direction, because apparently Han, Luke, and Leia never got the "happily ever after" that people originally thought happened at the end of ROTJ.

I think that at least in some cases, we'll see one's individuality celebrated (like Rey) and I'm sure that there are underlying themes of the family one chooses (ie, friends) but I think this is more of an embrace of the hand one is dealt rather than an attack on tradition.

There are certainly messages in the films, but this is absolutely not one of them.

You've missed the point of Star Wars completely then because it's always been about broken and dysfunctional families. Is your wish to see non-broken nuclear families and their stories in Star Wars films? If that's the case then I'm afraid you're in for disappointment. Those families exist in the GFFA but it's unlikely you're going to see many stories around them.

The Dameron family is a great example of a nuclear family and Poe is one of the main characters of the ST and you've conveniently left him out of your analysis. Galen and Lyra Erso planned to be a complete and happy family but the Empire broke them apart and set in motion the events that we follow in Rogue One.

Um, you do know that Luke grew up with an Aunt and Uncle. Anakin to a single mother, right? Those don't seem to ring the "traditional family" bell for me.

And it was his family that in part pushed him to the dark side.

Wait, the best Star Wars movie ever featured a nuclear family and their holiday traditions though! :p

You know, when a movie or tv show attacks something, it usually provides a "better alternative". ST does not provide any better alternative to a traditional family. You can find some "attacks", like the diverse Resistance opposing white male-run First Order, or how women seem to be wiser than men in the TLJ.
"Attack on family" usually looks like a rebellious child (preferable gay) rebelling against his/her strick, traditional (preferably religious) family. ST has nothing of that sort and the family drama in it is just what it is - drama.

Ah ha, but Han Solo and his life debt broke them apart. The sequel to the Holiday Special will show Lumpy getting revenge on his father for abandoning him. Mark my words.

Or how if you want to convince someone, a green goblin with a bluish halo is a better option than a twenty-something woman. :p

I like the way Disney is taking this ST so far. Finally we have the main characters mirrored in the minorities.
We have a semi-protagonist black guy - Finn.
    We have a latino semi-protagonist - Poe
We have The Protagonist (female and orfan) - Rey
We have an antagonist with mental issues - Kylo
Asians sisters and ex-slaves - Rose and Tico
    A thief stutterer - DJ

The other thing that I would like to see, and it was never show before, its a characters with homossexual tendencies.

Yes, because that's what Star Wars was always about - current social issues.
And if you want homosexual characters, check out the "Aftermath" novel trilogy.

    Other example.

Comparing old canon approach and new canon approach.

Question:which is the most prominent difference between old and new canon?

The most significant difference between old and new canon is in the status of families.

Look Lea and Han in old canon, they had 3 children of which one became what was,in honesty, coppied to became Kylo in new canon, and other 2 childs where good . Also Han and Leia were fighting more actively for their family .
In sequel trilogy Han and Leia only got one child (cut) which turned to be most evil version of their former canon 3 children (cut), and actually Han and Leia neglected need of their only son in favour of their careers(Han as racing pilot, Leia as politician in doomed New Republic.) ( another cut), while their lonely 2 years old son was threatened by house droid who wanted to cut the kid ( almost a cut:confused:).

How about Luke? In old canon Luke got almost perfect son by falling in love with former Imperial agent, however turned her on good side by his.. arguments..and formed his own nucleus family.
In new trilogy Luke is old hermit who never formed his own family (cut) and on top of that is basically hiding becuse of the fact he betrayed hos own nephew (cut) and thus participated in destruction of his already shaken familly in general (cut) .

So, comparing old and new canon we can observe scientifficaly a clear cuts that go stright trough families.

Ah so the truth comes out. You aren't worried about the ST attacking the institution of families you're just worried about them making stories that are different than those from Legends.

“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” – Leo Tolstoy.

And therefore unhappy families make stories interesting.

Cut goes stright trough families. This is main difference between old and new canon.
It is an observation (fact) not opinion.

@McDiarmid, you gotta level with me: is this just a discussion post, or do you legitimately feel threatened by this?

Because I honestly think that you need not worry.

I am exploring the way why I feel, despite technical perfection of the films, my deep contempt towards how they treated family in sequel trilogy.

I am searching for a way to finally compare with other people's views about this matter that bothers me for very long time, to be able to solve the mystery why I feel so dissatissfied and feel something wrong jet coherent in the way how they treat family things, while been so brave to call it a family trilogy (Skywalker trilogy means family trilogy).

I have very intelligent kids, and nephews, and I must explain them why uncle hates nephew, why nephey killed his own faher, why nobody in the film actually has functuional parents ., and why no parent has functional kids. There are question In need to answer to my kids, because I want them to carry on to be Star Wars fan just as their father.
