Is the relative age of Gleeson and Driver a plot point?

30-year-old me gets that, but explaining continuity to four or five-year-old me is a little tougher :)

1st, not all twins male-female need to look exactly alike, see: Leia & Luke. ;)
Also Gleeson and Phasma(Christie) could have the same ht, build. I don't get HBO and never see GoT so don't drag that into it.

Having twins in the ST isn't a big stretch. I doubt Gleeson's General character is a good guy but who knows.
Phasma to be honest seems like a new era General Grevious, her death or downfall may not be that huge of a deal.

Think about what a toll the Empire took in its officer Corps. Flagships (like the Super Star Destroyer and Death Stars) would heavily schew toward officer ranks within the Imperial Navy. The Death Stars weren't occupation/invasion weapons and likely had fewer troops to the considerable brass. I'm basing this on Quantico and my experiences within the Marine Corps.

As such, the Empire lost its ideal candidates for the Tarkins of 30 years later. Huge swathes of experience and leadership wiped out, leaving a bottom heavy service that naturally had many defectors. (f' this empire stuff, teddy bears massacred us and so forth).

Hollywood is obsessed with youth and comic books have this horrible habit of equating good strong Alpha male looks with power and privilege. This is probably best dramatized in the not so great film "Unbreakable", but alas the old formulas this film exposes still ring true.

It gets more prevalent and noticeable the older you get.

A 20-something General is ludicrous in any army, but old guys don't sell a lot of toys or movie tickets.

Hux seems very disposable to me now. He's a General with no real background, not much motivation who pushes "destroy everything now" button just so a space battle can come to a complete stop. It saves a lot of writing and I wager Hux is one of the least interesting characters in the film. He seems to be there to just launch the Deus Ex Machina to bring Act III to a close.

Kylo is raw, rugged and can't even build his own light saber, he's more indicative of what a young character should be in an action film.

It's sad that good looking people are powerful people and people who aren't good looking are either weird, villainous or comedic sidekicks. Action films still seem to insist that ugly people are evil, something established in Wizard of Oz that Hollywood has never really broken from since.

It's because across the spectrum of all genre media they make the majority of main characters young now.

Other then that, I don't think there is any significance
Plus in the original trilogy Princess Leia was like in the top 5 commanders of the Rebellion and she was only 18

You do know Gleeson and Driver are just 3-4 years younger then Han was in the original trilogy right? And Oscar Isaac is the age Ford was in the original Star Wars.

What's the life expectancy in a universe where civil war lasts for decades and entire planets are destroyed?

With the exception that the General on the left from the 80s actually looks like a man and not some Peter Pan wannabe...

My bet is that character dies real quick in this trilogy.
