The original trilogy was a chronological sequence. The prequels, of course, jumped back in time, but they advertised this well and stayed true to the prequel era.

The Disney films, however, have jumped around quite a bit. The sequel films take place in one era, Rogue One and Solo take place in another era, and we will soon have even more eras with the TV shows on streaming. Us hardcore fans have no problem with this, but it's pretty complicated for casual viewers. Even Marvel films, with all the different locations and characters, take place mostly in order.

Is this time-jumping just too much for casual viewers? Can part of the Solo slump be attributed to this? Would the films thrive if, instead of jumping around, they stuck to one time period and released chronologically?

People survived years with ANH being calling Episode 4 and so on before the PT came along. I don't think the various time jump is that confusing to the general audience. If anything, I think it's just Disney/Lucas film doing testing on what type of stories to tell other than the obvious ones. I think the Episode numbers of the OT and PT is more confusing to the general audience.

I think it does confuse the general audience. It probably doesn't detract from the entertainment factor for the most part, but being unable to grasp the bigger picture is a real issue (if we consider it an issue, that is). A lot of people had no clue when Rogue One takes place, although I don't think it changes a lot financially.

I don't think it was a problem in the case of Solo. The concept of young Han is easier to grasp chronologically than Rogue One.

It would probably be helpful for people to have access to a "master timeline" - and I'm sure there are already plenty available, but I'm adding one just in case:

    Episode I: The Phantom Menace
Episode II: Attack of the Clones
    The Clone Wars (movie)
    The Clone Wars (TV series)
Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
    Solo
    Star Wars Rebels (TV series)
    Rogue One
    Episode IV: A New Hope
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back
Episode VI: Return of the Jedi
    The Mandalorian (TV series)
    Star Wars Resistance (TV series)
    Episode VII: The Force Awakens
    Episode VIII: The Last Jedi
    Episode IX

If I made any mistakes or omissions, please let me know.
