    It's possible.

I still think there's a possibility that either Snoke or maybe some so far unknown threat in IX might be related to either Johnson or B&W's trilogies.

I have mentioned this before. Kinda fits in that there was a plan for Luke to die in EP8. TLJ was 100% complete by October 1, 2017. JJ Abrams signed on as director of Ep9 in early September. So JJ could have said "I need Luke alive" for EP9 or "I may need to have Luke alive" for EP9. It would have been very easy for RJ and/or LFL to recut TLJ and made it so that instead of Luke disappearing we are left with him look off into the sunset. Then slightly change the dialogue between Rey and Leia (even without Carrie Fisher). They had nearly 3 months to get that little bit of work done. They could have had 2 cuts. 1 with Luke disappearing and 1 with Luke just looking off into the sunset and JJ make up his mind by mid December. Apparently this was never needed and JJ was happy or even knew about Lukes death in Ep8 years before.

Likely because JJ knew he could use Luke in IX As a Force ghost

Luke had to die at the end of TLJ or early in the IX simply because he'd be in the way. Rey is the hero in this trilogy and if Luke is around in the last chapter he would have to be in the middle of everything. Killing him off allows Luke to still be around as a force ghost and it's an excuse for him not to interfere on her behalf. From a story standpoint it's better he dies in TLJ simply because that frees up more time for other stuff in IX.

A great deal of thought and care went into the Luke question and I'm sad we didn't get more of him in TFA, but I"m happy with how goes out in TLJ. It's certainly a better send off than what Han Solo got in TFA.

I'm somewhat surprised that they didn't have him die in the first episode of the ST. My expectation has always been - from even before there was any announcement of a ST - that Luke, now the 'master Jedi', would be the older 'Obi-Wan' mentor of the movie and would die as part of some self sacrifice. Just as I expected Qui Gon Jinn to die in TPM. It was always the intention, and I'm sure GL would have done the same. Because that's how Star Wars 'works'.

But they moved Luke's sacrifice to the second film, having Han fulfill the role of the 'Obi-Wan mentor' in TFA, and making Luke be more like the 'Yoda' of the series. Which in retrospect does make some kind of sense if the ST is to parallel with the OT, considering he's the only 'master of the Force' left over from the previous trilogy.

In a nutshell - Luke's 'death' was always 'part of the plan'. And Rian followed through with that plan.

Which is honestly a better use of him. Makes for a more interesting movie then having Luke be the Super Jedi that so many yearn for. "Insert Hello Greedo Video here"

it's remotely possible of course, that Luke was penciled in to die early in ep IX.

I've always had the feeling that JJ made a bigger change to the second half of TFA than originally planned.. I wonder if their plans for ending this Saga changed dramatically during TFA's production and they asked Rian to put Luke's death into TLJ. This may have been the 'creative difference' that caused Trevorrow to part ways if Luke was originally going to be a big part of IX's opening.

i'm just thinking out loud lol

If Trevorrow wanted Luke alive and LFL was ok with that then like I said they had plenty of time to make that change. So it wasnt RJ saying no to Trevorrow it was LFL.

If the Luke death was a concern for Trevorrow, it wouldn't have been the issue for 3 years then he leaves the project.
It's more likely tied to Carrie Fisher's passing and how to handle that and re-working the script for that.

Any rumor or rumblings about Luke surviving beyond 8 is just lazy speculation driven by people who are mad he died. They want to shift blame to RJ and KK and think Trevorrow would have saved them but the dastardly Kathleen Kennedy wouldn't budge!

I agree. Someone would need to go back and check the timeline but I’m pretty sure the trouble with Trevorrow came after Carrie’s death. I think he had trouble with having to modify his original story or trouble coming up with a new one which got him released. I believe if Carrie hadn’t of passed, we would be seeing Trevorrow’s movie. They even brought in another writer after Carrie paassed to help with the story. It was shortly after that JJ and Terrio were brought on board. It probably didn't help that the Book of Henry flopped big time.

    I agree.
Carrie passed in 2016, right before Rogue One. Trevorrow was released in mid-late 2017.
He may have wanted Luke retroactively alive and then Carrie's death worked into VIII, but I doubt him wanting Luke/Snoke alive from day one was the issue. he never would have made it to 2017 if it were the issue.

The Book of Henry is a weird one. A lot of people blamed that, but Book of Henry actually was finished filming and prepped to be released in 2016. So it's safe to say Disney more than likely knew what it was...and that it wasn't good, by the release date being pushed back a full year. (Looking at you X-Men) If that were why he was canned, they wouldn't have done it so close to the start of production on IX.

We don't always agree, heck I don't think we have EVER agreed, but I knew that at some point I'd find a post that I could like. LOL I don't mind that Luke died in VIII either. I actually like that he went out doing some amazing force power thingy. And I agree getting him out of the way frees up Rey and his death is way better than Han's death in VII (even though I called that when I saw how darn ecstatic Ford was in the interviews about the film).

Yeah.. it seemed obvious to me the moment they announced Ford agreed to be in it.

He had been wanting Han killed off since ESB and wanted nothing to do with Star Wars after ROTJ.

So when he said "I like the direction they're taking the character" as the reason for returning to the role, there was little doubt in my mind what that meant!

But even so, right up to just before that very moment in the cinema, I was still on the edge of my seat thinking... are they going to do it? Maybe I'm wrong.. maybe he meant something else...

I don’t think Book of Henry alone factored into his being released. However, I think his struggles with IX was the main driver of his release but then when you add in his most recent movie was a bad failure, I think it added to Kathleen Kennedy’s cold feet. I don’t think Lucasfilm wanted to risk it.

    That's fair.
In all honesty, it's probably much more complex than any of us will ever know. At least in the near future.

Both send offs were good but for me Han’s was better for many reasons: first because of the dramatic intensity of the moment (the parride reminded me of Greek tragedy, of how brutality and evil are inextricably attached to the human condition). Second, because it showed us not only the potential but “the nature” of Kylo Ren as a villain, as it is his vulnerability precisely what makes him most dangerous. Therefore I think that, in the whole, Han’s death served better not only the drama but also the substance and evolution of both these characters.

Matt Martin, Lucasfilm Story Group: "Every little thing seems to have a backstory here [in the new Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge part of the theme park]. When we’re making the films we kind of retroactively make up what the stories could be. But here [with Galaxy's Edge], we were thinking of the stories as we went." (February 27, 2019)

Regarding Luke's death in TLJ, I saw it as a replay of Obi Wan's death in ANH. The mentor, who really didn't do that much training, sacrificed himself so that the heroes could make an escape and live to fight another day. It was actually much more obvious in TLJ than it was in ANH because Poe said it out loud. Besides, Luke has now become "more powerful than you could possibly imagine." He showed that he had transcended mere flips and telekinesis to do something truly powerful. That is, project his consciousness across the galaxy in a way the fooled another powerful Force user. So yeah, I'm in the "plan" camp. Besides, I wouldn't be surprised to see Luke doing some bada$$ery in a flashback in IX as fan service. It's not like JJ has never done fan service before

I'm not sure how this pertains to the ST? Backstories on Poe, Holdo, Rose, Snoke, Finn, Maz, etc... are all come after the characters are created for film.
