When J. J. Abrams said he was taking a deep dive into Star Wars Episode IX shortly after the release of The Cloverfield Paradox on Netflix, he wasn't kidding: just twelve days after making that statement, the script to Star Wars Episode IX has been completed!

Talking on The Late Show to Stephen Colbert, the host - a huge Star Wars geek himself - asked if he could tell the audience anything about Episode IX. Abrams, per usual, kept things close to his vest, but stated that the script to the movie is finished:

The actual video adds an important detail to the mix: that filming begins in July, and not June as originally reported.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyXscDJSHD0

For frame of reference, Abrams was hired to take over for Colin Trevorrow on September 12, 2017 - so that means that in five months, he and Chris Terrio were able to come up with a script (one which might have taken cues from the Trevorrow, Derek Connolly, and Jack Thorne drafts - or could have discarded them altogether). This leaves more than enough time for Abrams to make additional preparations all across the board (including the script, if need be) before the movie begins filming in June, which raises a few questions about when we'll get to hear about things like casting rumors. It's gonna be a long wait between Solo and Episode IX - hopefully, it's well worth it.

Love how Abrams works. He always gives security and confidence in a project and plenty of time to make things right and gives time enough to review all parts before its release.
Can't wait to hear first rumors and news. I really enjoy the process of these films.

i love that he said "we have a script" (according to the tweet), i was kind of worried that it would be the final script after just 12 days.
sure, it could have been fast because he had a clear idea of the whole thing but i have a tough time believing it would be a polished version after just 12 days.
    hoping for the best though!

They spent more time with the writing compared to TFA, so that's a positive sign. Plus, they've already had some material to work with...
I'm still not sure how I feel about Terrio. Ever since Argo he was pretty much only associated with crap.

Yeah, no. You can't write a script in twelve days... I'm no expert, but most take a year or so to write them. Especially with the new director thing.

As an aspiring (but currently failing) screenwriter, I can tell you that it is very possible to knock out just the writing of the script in 12 days, especially if it's only the first draft.

A common rule I was always taught when writing your first draft is something along the lines of, "Just write and write and write. Don't stop to think about whether this or that belongs or if it makes sense, that's what revisions and edits are for."

But the whole writing process, especially for a film like Star Wars would most definitely take months and months to complete from start to finish.

    Oh for sure.

There are also different versions of the script. An early script likely only contains dialogue and brief descriptions of action, while a shooting script goes into significantly more depth including descriptions of shots, lighting, and sometimes even musical cues. My guess is we just have an early script right now.

That being said, this is still extremely exciting. Even if it's just a rough draft, this trilogy's conclusion is on paper now, and not just some nebulous thought in the LFL collective mind. How cool is that?

One thing I definitely do like, despite the chaos that might be going around outside of Lucasfilm within the SW community, they seem to be... I'm not really sure what the right word would be, but there seems to be a calmness and control over everything. I don't mean that in the sense that everything feels like it's being buttoned up or contained, there seems to be a genuine confidence in what they're doing and that's all I can really ask for.

JJ's definitely learned a lot from his first time around and now he gets the chance to apply it. Having a script of any kind done now when shooting doesn't start for another five months is pretty great, nothing is being rushed.

Yes, a calmness in a way of 'just don't rush it'....we want this to be great. Like no sense of urgency?

I am really happy to have JJ back to close this out. Plus, I just like him as a person. He seems like someone you could hang out with. His demeanor helped craft the characters in TFA, it feels right that he is the person handling episode IX.

I am really encouraged that they have a script, he seems pleased with it. It's a great start!

I'm sure the script hasn't been rushed. JJ knew the story of The Last Jedi way back before Rian had even started shooting, and he has probably been writing and working on the script since September last year.

What worries me is that it's been completed so quickly after the backlash to TLJ. This means that JJ means serious business when he says nothing will change. In other words: We're going to get something very similar to either TFA or TLJ, and any of Trevorrow's amazing ideas have probably been discarded....

Possibly or perhaps they have usd Trevorrow's script as a foundation for this one which s why it appears to have been finished so quickly. But then I'm a optimist.

Also if was under the impression JJ has been working on the script since he was brought on board after Trevorrow departure it just he has been on it full time for the last 12 days.

I hope they do a heath ledgar
what amazing ideas exactly...treverrow took a amazing idea in jurassic world and turned it into one of the worst modern blockbusters in history...and if you are disgruntled about lukes character in TLJ than dont be....he was never much of a interesting character without his father anyway

Please tell me more. In my opinion Jurassic World was a pretty good movie. Far from great, but it definitely reignited the franchise.
