During his series of press interviews at Star Wars Celebration Chicago, J. J. Abrams explained that he talked quite a bit with franchise creator George Lucas about the direction of the final film in the Skywalker saga, and notes that Lucasfilm is still repurposing ideas that Lucas came up with prior to the sale of his company to Disney. Abrams previously stated that he spoke with Lucas, alongside Rian Johnson and Lawrence Kasdan, while developing Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

One ongoing debate within the fandom is about how much (or how little) of the sequel trilogy has been planned thus far. When given an opportunity to speak with Abrams, a reporter for MTV News asked this very question, to which Abrams replied there were definitely clear ideas of how the pieces of the story would fit together in The Rise of Skywalker, and that they're tied to the plans left behind by George Lucas:

So it seems to confirm at least what we've personally expected: there was a specific beginning and end to this story planned out in advance, but what came in the middle was a mix of what each director was going to bring to this trilogy and various repurposed concepts from the maker himself. This also heavily suggests that the supposedly-discarded Lucas-made ideas may have had more influence over the story than we were previously led to believe.

The full interview can be seen below:

This is interesting. I really wish they would have kept 1 Director the entire time, but I have faith JJ will make this movie worth watching.

I know it's off topic....but I'll always remember the first ever glimpse of Palpatine emerging from his shuttle in ROTJ. I never thought anyone could be more scary than Vader....but even now he gives me chills.

I'm really encouraged by JJ's philosophy while writing TROS. I was very worried that it would just be a conclusion to the ST and not a conclusion to all 9 films. It sounds like this is what JJ and team attempted to do while writing the movie. Hopefully they deliver on it.

On a separate unrelated note while there certainly still divisions and most likely always will be I've felt a coming together of the fanbase. It is nice I missed that.

We have 3 trilogies to look at. 1st the OT which had multiple core writers and 3 different directors. 2nd the PT which had 1 core writer and 1 director. Now we have the ST with multiple directors and several writers. I think that overall the 2nd and 3rd trilogies are far better executed so far then the PT. Dont get me wrong the story of the PT is very good. It is the execution of the director and writers that fell short. As much as I love George Lucas he should have delegated more during the PT.

Honestly, i'm glad JJ just did the first and last of this trilogy.. he may have burned out on VIII and given us a weak IX.

on the PT we had 2 writers and 1 director and a single vision
on the ST we had 5writers and 2 directors and not a single vision (imo)

I like the idea, but I'm struggling with how they can tie up so much in around 2 hours....bring on a 6 hour movie JJ!

I don't think you can say there is or isn't a single vision yet.
By all accounts, all those involved have known how this ends from day one.
If the third film works seamlessly with the first two, how is it not one vision?

Obviously they could still retcon this all and none of it matters.

I read somewhere that for Lucas continuity in his trilogies and stories means a well thought out philosophical and metaphysical framework, and that for him characters and stories are less relevant and can be modified and changed freely while still maintaining the true philosophy of the story... I wonder how much of this way of approaching the creative process influenced the making of the ST... and if perhaps it explains why RJ had such creative freedom in TLJ.

And talking about the creative process, where is Terio hiding? I haven't seen him talking about TROS anywhere. Is there any interview with him?

I don't buy that OT had a single vision. In ANH Anikan Skywaler and Darth Vader were two different people. There was a love triangle between Luke, Leia and Han. Luke and Han were both trying to capture Leia's affection all through ANH and ESB. Darth Vader became Luke's father only until the end of ESB and Luke and Leia just became sibling until the middle of ROTJ. George may of had a general arc to tell his story but the details of getting there was never set in stone in a single vision. Just like the ST had a lose vision (Only points A, L, T and Z had to happen, but everything else in between was up to each of the directors and writers)

Maybe he's kidnapped and in the wreckage of the Deathstar2. That's why the main cast is going there to find him. It was the Emperor's plan all along.

I would be a bit disappointed actually if it's not the longest Star Wars movie.

The one thing about Lucas writing is that his Trilogies always end up with a macro and micro arc. That is why the movies end up feeling connected because he is always developing his movies to tell one big story. So I have my problems with Lucas on the little things, but he’s great with the big picture stuff.

Ironically, the big picture stuff is my biggest frustration with the ST so far. I still don’t know if JJ can tie these movies altogether and hopefully Lucas steered him that way.

I am so glad George Lucas was talked with about the end of the skywalker saga.

For me this has to tie up the Anakin/chosen one prophecy and I’m sure george was talked to about what that prophecy was supposed to be. Balance to the galaxy.
And how to achieve that in a universe at war.

I know Lucas had this idea of the Whils and that they were like a spirit or maco entity that influenced the midichlorians and controled the lives of people and the universe through this apparent ‘force.’
I don’t think TROS will go this far out, George is too brave and strange but I do love his crazy ideas. I do think however that the idea of manipulating life and bending it to your will as the whills do, is something simmilar to both the conception of Anakin and the corruption of Ben Solo. So I think in regards to the narrative some of that idea from Georges initial script might make an appearance.
