I posted this first part in the thread Jakku = Tatooine, but I've done more digging and it has lead me down a different path. This may be old news but here it goes...

It appears as though this piece of equipment is in both the first trailer, and the leaked set photos of Greenham Common AB "grass planet" set:

At first glance many of us thought the "mystery" machine was a pod racer engine on Tatooine. However, seeing as though that it's also found at the Resistance "grassy" base, it most likely isn't a pod racer engine.

So I dug deeper and realized this...
There are many similarities between the "grass planet" set (which many have speculated to be Yavin 4 due to the grass) and what we see in the trailer of Jakku. In fact, these "mystery" machines are all over the place at the Greenham Common airbase set - it almost appears as if there is one for every ship, which makes me think they may be some kind of auxiliary startup power/generator unit.

Red boxes: Mystery generator pod racer engine things
    Yellow boxes: moisture vaporators?
Blue box: pipe/well thing that was in the TMZ set images is identical to the one at Greenham Common AB
    [IMG]

So I figure there are a few possible scenarios here:

    1. It just so happens that this equipment and technology is common throughout the current Star Wars galaxy.

    2. Identical set props have been used at both Greenham Common and Abu Dhabi (which seems incredibly odd as these sets are obviously in totally different locations) - I'm sure Ep. VII has the funding to build new props wherever they want, and it seems unrealistic that they'd build the exact same sets for different planets.

    3. The craziest idea is that the Greenham Common set actually isn't on a grassy planet at all. Perhaps it is actually Jakku and the location was chosen for close up shots of the bunkers as there are no "accessible" places like this in the desert. The green grass will be very easy to replace as it is naturallysimilar to green screen/alpha channel etc.

I will have to say that it doesn't make sense that the bunkers appear to have vines on them, and there are bushes etc that look like they could have easily been cleared away.. Anyway, I still wanted to bring this up and see what everyone else thinks about it. Any ideas?

Good digging @cassidy. My hunch is that its scenario 2, they reusing the same prop across multiple sets.

Two different locations, I don't think Jakku has grass. But those prop finds you found, ya I agree are common technology in the galaxy. There is a star ship company Surosub or whatever its called that makes ships but I don't know if they make engines too, I would assume so. And that place on Jakku from seems to be some kind of space port with a market place. Seeing we know the Falcon is parked around the area.

For prop use I think its just a way for them to reuse pieces on different locations. They'll reuse things for other star wars movies as well, and most likely for the live action series if it ever gets here.

Isn't on a grassy planet at all? I do see grass at that rebel base? I think its at Yavin, just near the temple.

I´m goinfg with a combination of 1 and 2. Because disagree on that:
When ever a giant Corporation build something that works why not sell it throughout the galaxy. No need for a special Prop for each planet, like multiple Droid versions seen all around the gffa, no special region lock version is needed.

Just curious, had anyone ever considered that multiple biomes can exist on the same planet in a Star Wars film? For all we know the desert, the lakes, the grass, and the snowy forest, could all be Jakku.

Does it really seem odd that they would re-use some generic machinery props on multiple sets - especially machinery located at two different locations where people park their spaceships?

You can even see the domed structure in background partly on fire. Falcon parked near it as seen in concept art above.

because it could be quite boring. I love those shots of ships arriving or departing planets and hyperspace jumps!

Can't wait to see the Falcon going into hyperspace again, I bet they're saving that shot for the trailer.

My two cents are continuity in the Star Wars galaxy. Just props and sets. Reusable props and sets

you can still have that. lets say they leave in the summer and return during the winter to the same planet. all of a sudden we see snow. we would know that time has passed.

    pew pew.
Hmm, not a huge fan of that idea, just to shoehorn everything in one planet? We don´t need to see all those different climate zones of one planet just to know that there is diversity on one planet we need a purpose for different settings.
Just a nice pacing and western like setting from point A to the following points, like it has always been.
    GFFA is big.

I don't think there is any mystery here. It is just an example of X number of set pieces having been produced (or even hauled out of storrage from earlier films), and seeing use on several sets. This is standard Hollywood sensibilities, it being cheaper to move stuff across the planet, then to build multiple pieces.

But great find! I love spotting this kind of thing in movies :)

I admire anyone trying to take a different spin on things but I agree that it's most likely different sets/planets and just reusing props.

Sorry if this has been said, but:

    4. Jakku was home to a Resistance base similar to that filmed at Greenham, and it was the base's presence that lured the Empire there for the Battle of Jakku. (We are assuming the BoJ was a Resistance (Rebellion) initiative, but it needn't necessarily be so).

Great post though, thanks for info--and personally I think 2. is most likely, and no doubt we'll see those props again in the Anthology movies and future Saga episodes, too!....

Wayne I don't think that's supported by the existing fluff on Jakku. The battle happens about 12 months after Endor because remnant Imperials gathered at an out of the way remote desert world.
