Despite what was said at Celebration - I still think this is a giant Red Herring - the Khan of EP 7.

    There are lots of theories...

    1. Tatooine has been renamed for the new resident crimelord - Jakku the Hutt

    2. it's simply a codename to keep the Mystery Box intact

    3. One of the suns was destroyed during the Battle after Jedi and the First Order renamed it for some reason

    4. The Resistance has renamed it or changed the main star map database to keep it hidden for some reason

Some of the "hints" that it's still Tatooine:

    1. In the Battlefront teaser of the Battle of Jakku (which is supposed to take place soon after Jedi) - we have Boba Fett (last known location Tattoine), a Jawa sandcrawler, and a crashing Star Destroyer that is impacting exactly like the one in the second teaser trailer

    2. Moisture vaporators

    3. J - Jeffrey A - Abrams K - Kathleen K - Kennedy (U)

    4. Daisy Ridley's expression when she talks about Jakku at Celebration

    5. JJ's voice and mannerisms as he's saying it's Jakku

    6. Renaming in general in the film - so far we have Empire = First Order, Rebels = Resistance, Tatooine = Jakku

    7. And mostly - it looks exactly the freaking same. Why would you have a planet that looks exactly like an iconic Star Wars planet from 5 out of the 6 initial films???!?? Just doesn't make sense and screams unoriginality. There HAS TO be a reason for the name change that fits the story...but it's still Tatooine. Roll on December.

Have your say above! (And below)...

I don't think JJ would go through something like the Khan thing again. I hope not, at least. There'd be absolutely no reason to hide this being Tatooine. None at all. Honestly, though, I think it may be out of respect to Tunisia and the "real" Tatooine, since they did not film there this time. I think the place is noticeably different from Tatooine to warrant it being a different planet. The sand's even the wrong color.

In Return of the Jedi - Tatooine was in Arizona. Or was that Blue Harvest? ;-)

That's a good point, and I wouldn't argue that that location looked all that different from Tunisia. However - and I'm just speaking for myself - my first thought upon seeing the first teaser trailer was "that's not Tatooine." It looked off.

Ultimately, I still see no reason for there to be a cover up about it. And with Battlefront involved, it seems like a pointless lie that could easily spin out of control and backfire. What could possibly be the reason?

Something that's important to the plot. There must be some type of "Oh Snap!" moment when you find out Jakku is really Tatooine.

Go back and watch the part of Celebration where she says it...and earlier in the video where JJ talks about it. Compare him talking about Jakku with the other things he brings up.

Total aside - I love how KK says, "I can't tell you how much Harrison wanted to be here" - that's absolutely the truth - she CAN NOT tell you he wanted to be there. He'd rather have died in the plane crash than be there. ;-)

Jakku is Jakku. Tatooine is Tatooine. No codename.

Boba being in the Battle of Jakku means nothing because everybody was in that battle.

Battlefront calls it Jakku. The upcoming Aftermath Novel calls it Jakku

Too much eveidence that it is simply just Jakku.

Just that Boba was alive and well in that battle on the planet that Battlefront calls Jakku.

Seems possible but why not just call it Tatooine? Why go through all the trouble of confusing casual fans who are going to look and say - oh it must be Tatooine only to have someone in the know say - nope that is JAKKU! If it is a ruse, it doesn't seem to have any apparent value because most people will think it is Tatooine anyway - they can see it and will assume it is.

It might just be that they want to expand the universe and add more to the mythos of Star Wars without having to worry about getting every single detail of Tatooine right.

By having it be Jakku they can create a new history and mythos around the place (aka spin offs, comics, games) without having to worry about stomping on some previous canon lore.

Jawas are the only big issue since they are native to Tatooine - but if Obi-wan can order Jawa Juice on Coruscant, then it is possible some of the Jawas get around by the time TFA happens.

It could also be that the video game started making Tatooine long before they were told it is Jakku and just never pulled the sandcrawlers or were told - its ok by leland chee. The Star Trek Online game had Romulus in the development of the game until JJ Star Trek production call up saying that Romulus was getting blown up, sorry. Stuff like that happens.

    1. The Battlefront developers said that desert battle was Tattoine. Not Jakku. Even if it was Jakku, Boba Fett will be a hero character playable on any level. Has zero to do with the movie.

    2. JJ will not make the same mistake he made with Khan. He has talked before about how that blew up in his face. He will not make the same mistake twice.

    3. JJ and Kathleen want to leave their mark on the series with their own planet. Hence JAKKU = Jeffrey Abrams Kathleen Kennedy Universe. This is their way of subtly saying: "This ain't George's movie.

Okay so let me understand this - you're backup that Boba Fett is on Jakku and not Tatooine was that "everyone" was in the Battle of Jakku because "Boba was alive and well in that battle on the planet that Battlefront calls Jakku". Got it. ;-)

Regarding the Battlefront article - I see this:
FACT: As I’ve mentioned, you can see a Star Destroyer crash into Tatooine’s surface (which is pretty destructive, if I do say so myself).

I don't think the clip DICE showed is Jakku. They haven't shown us that map yet. It was Tatooine IMO. "But there is a crashing Star Destroyer!" DICE likes big set pieces and "levelution." What better than that for a backdrop?

Their video was(badly and unintentionally) edited to make people think that footage was Jakku because they were talking about it at the time they showed the clip.

There's many crashed Strar Destroyers on Jakku...as the trailer has shown. A ship graveyard
